摘要:
AbstractThe formula of the glycoside karakin, which occurs in karaka nuts (Corynocarpus laevigata), was previously reported as C20H30O19N4. It has now been corrected to C15H21O15N3, confirming the analysis of Carrie. Diacetylkarakin, C19H25O17N3, has been prepared in a crystalline form, confirming the revised formula for karakin. It is now shown that the probable formula for the glycoside is 1:4: 6‐tris‐(β‐nitropropionyl) D‐gluco

摘要:
AbstractThe use of self‐sustained gas‐producing reactions of such materials as ammonium nitrate, guanidine nitrate, and nitroguanidine, with various sensitizers, for the dispersion of benzene hexachloride and other pesticides is described. The optimum mixtures of gas‐producing component, sensitizer, and pesticide to give easy initiation, complete propagation, and high volatilization‐efficiency have been investigated.A laboratory method for the biological assessment of the smoke deposits is given. The particle size, persistence, and settling time of these deposits, their distribution over horizontal, inverted horizontal, and vertical surfaces, and the relative toxicity of different types of surface have been studied. The design for manufacture of smoke generators based on these principles is di

摘要:
AbstractMeasurements of temperature and humidity have been made in a steel‐sheeted stack of bagged palm kernels during a period of one year and they have been correlated with the atmospheric temperature and humidity. The oxygen and carbon dioxide contents of the air in the stack have also been determined at intervals. The results are consistent with the occurrence of ventilation in the stack. This ventilation is apparently sufficient to carry away heat produced by the slow absorption of oxygen which takes place.Over long periods the mean relative humidity of the air in the stack is about equal to the mean atmospheric humidity for the period, when allowance is made for the difference in temperature that may exist between the interior of the stack and the atmosphere. Thus the overall moisture content of the stack approaches equilibrium with long‐period mean atmospheric humidities; but this is a slow process and the importance of including only dry bags of kernels in the stack is emphasized. No heating was detected in the stacks under observation and, during those periods when humidity measurements were made, conditions in the stacks were not favourable to active mould‐g

摘要:
AbstractThe range of self‐heating of the moistened materials of the palm‐kernels stack, under aerobic conditions and with known heat loss, has been explored. It has been concluded that the heating under these conditions is mainly due to the respiration of a micro‐flora developing on the materials. No evidence has been found of a reaction, consequential to the biological reactions, which could continue the heating above the lethal temperature for the micro‐flora present in the palm kernels or in the jute bags contaminated with the palm‐kernel fat. If this is to occur the intervention of an anaerobic stage in the biological activity is likely to be

摘要:
AbstractMethods of processing hake livers whereby the protein fraction and the water‐soluble nutritional factors may be recovered in addition to the oil and oil‐soluble vitamins, have been examined. Methods involving (a) partial tissue digestion by papain, and (b) water‐extraction (under conditions involving some autolysis) have been compared. The water‐soluble fraction from process (b) has been subjected to evaporation under reduced pressure and to spray‐drying. The powder thus obtained has been analysed for nitrogenous components, glycogen, vitamins of the B group (including vitamin B12) and for fifteen inorganic

摘要:
AbstractThe large‐scale laboratory preparation of (±)‐cis‐ and (±)‐trans‐chrysanthemic [2: 2‐dimethyl‐3‐isobutenylcyclopropane‐I‐carboxylic] acids is improved, in view of their importance as components of synthetic pyrethrins, e.g. allethrin.A short series of esters from (±)‐cis‐ and (±)‐trans‐chrysanthemic acids containing either —[CH2]n.C6H4CI‐p, where n = o, 1, and 2, or —CH2.CO.C6H4C1‐p, or —CH2.CC13 groups as the alcoholic components is prepared, representing DDT‐pyrethrin hybrids. Insecticidal testing shows these esters
