AbstractThe types of diet most likely to limit physiological performance through mineral or vitamin inadequacy under practical conditions are considered. The effects of dietary imbalance, particularly of calcium, magnesium and copper, are discussed and limitations to present knowledge of vitamin and mineral requirements of stock are described. It is strongly emphasised that before more precise information of nutrient requirements can be obtained or exploited there is a need for greater knowledge of the mineral and vitamin content of common British feeding stuffs.

AbstractWood smoke consists of two discrete phases, a disperse liquid phase—smoke particles— and a dispersing gas phase—smoke vapours. These phases constitute a partition system, individual smoke constituents being distributed between them according to their respective partition coefficients, following Nernst's law. When the partition equilibrium is disturbed, e.g., by diluting the smoke with air or by scrubbing out smoke components from the vapour phase, or when the partition coefficients are changed, e.g., by raising the temperature, a transfer of smoke constituents from the disperse liquid to the vapour phase occurs. This results in a change in the relative mass concentrations of individual smoke constituents in the vapour phase, the vapours becoming relatively richer in non‐volatile and poorer in volatile smoke components. Abstract(1) Free sugars, comprised of a mixture of stachyose, sucrose and raffinose, constituted about 0.86% of the groundnut phospholipids insoluble in alcohol. Sucrose and stachyose were also associated with the alcohol‐soluble fraction of the material which contained some 0.6% of free sugar.(2) Combined sugars represented a further 4.66% of the alcohol‐insoluble and 2.36% of the alcohol‐soluble fractions. Glucose and galactose were found in both fractions; the alcohol‐insoluble phospholipids contained also arabinose and mannose.(3) Groundnut phytoglycolipid differs from the phytoglycolipids of soya‐bean and maize in the extremely small quantity of mannose present and the correspondingly high concentration of
