AbstractAlternative services and businesses attempt to create egalitarian relations among their workers and to enhance the relation between the workplace and the surrounding community. Although these settings oppose traditional organizational forms, they possess their own internal value conflicts that generate considerable stress among their workers. This article describes one alternative setting in terms of its history and organizational conflicts, and then describes an intervention effort that reduced the members' interpersonal stress. The particular conflicts that emerged during consultation and how they were handled are documented. Numerous naturally occurring indicators are presented that suggest the effectiveness of this consultation. A setting‐focussed form of traditional group process consultation is concluded to be effective in nontraditional setting

AbstractThis article presents the results of a 1979 national survey of federally funded community mental health centers (CMHCs). The directors and chief program evaluators of 323 CMHCs returned questionnaires which allow comparisons of the opinions of the center managers and their evaluators regarding accountability and evaluation and the level and knowledge of center evaluation staff. The CMHC directors and evaluators are also compared to a random sample of community psychologists and four other criterion groups of professionals regarding their responses to three items of the service provider accountability subscale of the Human Service Ideology scale.

AbstractA two‐phase program was developed to foster a more efficient community response to the problem of spouse abuse. The first phase described resulted in a booklet to assist human services workers in providing pertinent information to victims of spouse abuse. The second phase consisted of separate training programs for four occupational categories: police officers, attorneys and legislators, counselors and clergy, and medical personnel. AbstractSixteen Asian‐American and Pacific Island mental health professionals received 10 weekly, 2‐hour training sessions on behavior modification and its application, in particular, to Asian‐American clients. A three‐fold assessment of the training results revealed: a) a significant increase in knowledge of behavior modification principles, b) a significant increase in ability to accomplish a behavioral analysis and behavioral treatment plan, and c) a significant increase in one of three attitudes toward behavior modification: oriented activity. In general, the training was rated highly and, perhaps more importantly, was viewed as having relevance for this particular minority population which often underutilizes mental health services. AbstractTo compare the effects on counseling experience of two different training programs, three counseling reports from each member of two groups of volunteer telephone counselors were content analysed. As predicted, the counselors working in the agency using thenonprofessionalapproach proved to communicate more anxieties and depressive feelings and also positive feelings and feelings of competence than those working with theprofessionalapproach. They also appeared to be more aware of the social networks within which they were operating. The views of their callers which each group presented were also different, although the types of calls they received were not. The volunteer counselors in the nonprofessionally oriented program described their callers as less anxious and less helpless than did those in the professionally oriented program. These differences were related to the emphasis on informal selection procedures, gut‐level spontaneity, and the peer relationships among “insiders” which appeared to characterize the nonprofessional approach. This was contrasted with the formalized selection procedures, standardized counseling techniques based on professional models, and asymmetrical relationships among “outsiders” which characterized the professional approach to volunteer c

AbstractNinety‐eight individuals rendered homeless by flooding of the Mississippi were interviewed shortly after the disaster and one year later. Data included demographic information, severity of property damage, personal reactions to the disaster, and the 20‐item Mental Status Index, a symptom checklist designed to quantify emotional stress. Just after the flood victims were asked to complete the Mental Status Index twice, using as a frame of reference their mental/emotional state before the disaster and their mental/emotional state since the disaster experience. The results indicated a significant increase in emotional distress immediately after the flood. One year later, the level of emotional distress had declined somewhat relative to that reported shortly after the disaster; however, it still remained significantly above pre‐flood levels. Although victims continued to show effects of the disaster after 12 months, none developed a major mental illness for the first time. Findings of this and similar followup studies suggest that the most appropriate and cost/effective role for the mental health worker in times of natural disaster is that of a consultant in crisis management to primary caregivers such as family physicians, clergy, and full‐time disaster pe
