AbstractThis paper explores the relationship between community psychology and its commitment to issues of human diversity. It is argued that the evolving conception of diversity and the emergence of contextualist/constructionist philosophies of science provide an opportunity to integrate human diversity into research and practice in community psychology. The history of community psychology's involvement with issues of human diversity is outlined, and an ecological perspective is offered as one framework for incorporating diversity issues into the field.

AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to ascertain the relative effects of neighboring and residential satisfaction on the psychological well‐being of urban elders. It also examines these relationships within the context of the elders' personal resources —socioeconomic status, health, and mobility. The data were obtained from a random digit‐dial sample of 254 noninstitutionalized urban elders living in the Columbus, Ohio, metropolitan area. Based on a structural equation analysis using Bender's EQS, the findings show limited support for the neighborhood effects. However, these effects did not hold up when personal resources were included in the model. Thus it is concluded that the relationship between residential satisfaction and psychological well‐being is an artifact of their mutual relationship with personal resources. AbstractThis study looks at a two‐factor model of coping, identifies predictors of coping, and contrasts family characteristics of high and low copers among 44 Spanish‐speaking mothers of retarded children. The first factor was the efficacy of problem solving as measured by mothers' responses to ten empirically derived vignettes of typical life events with a retarded child. The second factor was the mother's teaching skills as measured by the quality of teaching done at home. Multiple regression analyses, including demographic, social support, and crisis support variables, showed that ratings of support networks, knowledge of professional resources, and perceptions of overall support were positively related and mother's age was negatively related to the problem‐solving measure of coping. No prediction could be made for the quality of teaching. Discriminant analyses using a ten‐scale family characteristics measure revealed that four scales discriminated high and low copers on the vignette measure and seven on the teaching measure. AbstractDespite increasing activity aimed at integrating health and social services and linking them to schools, little attention has been paid to the mechanisms that must be created to accomplish this policy direction. AbstractWe discuss the process underlying the success of an HIV‐prevention project for young, inner‐city women. The intervention was based on the concepts of empowerment and culturally sensitive skill building. Four critical points relevant to the translation of HIV prevention knowledge into behavioral change among the sample are examined: (1) integrating the important issues of the participants' lives into the HIV prevention program, (2) utilizing a group format to encourage cohesiveness and support, (3) engaging group facilitators to promote mutuality and equality, and (4) promoting ongoing, authentic relationships among the participants and staff members. AbstractOne hundred eighty adult homeless men and women who were housed in a temporary shelter were administered measures of self‐efficacy, interpersonal competence, and social desirability. The goals were to obtain descriptive personality data for this growing subpopulation and to determine whether personality variables were related to selected demographic variables.
