AbstractDislocation of native American tribes and pueblos and the alteration of traditional ways of earning a living, with ensuing poverty, on dislocated reservations has had a major impact on many native American communities. Poverty, hopelessness, and the attractiveness of Anglo possessions have led to reducing the importance of tradition and ancient culture in the everyday life of many American Indians. Under these circumstances, adult alcoholism reduces the capacity to parent infants and children and results in developmental deviations. Child abuse and neglect result in developmental problems noted in poor school performance, depression, adolescent alcoholism and suicide, etc.Efforts of a few American Indian communities to emphasize the teaching of traditional ways and to deal with community problems in new ways are described. They are encouraging. These pilot efforts, which emanate from the tribe or are encouraged and helped along by mental health consultants, begin to alter the status and sense of well‐being of the adults and adolescents. Some pilot projects described here deal with altering the young, “high‐risk,” adolescent woman's image and understanding of herself and with her subsequent parenting of children, with its profound effect on newborn infants and their development. The effort of these projects is to reverse the maldevelopment of the young in the hope that more integrated, competent, and creative native American adolescents and adults will enhance the teaching and learning of tradition—that these efforts will help more native Americans to find ways of using the tools of modern Anglo society so they do not do away with the ancient customs and traditions and their healthy impact on dai

AbstractAccording to traditional Navajo belief, sibling incest causes grand mal seizures. A 10‐year study of Navajo epileptics revealed that these patients generally led troubled lives. Epileptic women were raped, gave birth to illegitimate children, and actually committed incest, whereas epileptic men tended to attempt suicide and to drink heavily. In order to test the hypothesis that negative beliefs were the major causes of these social and psychological problems, three Pueblo tribes living in the same region and served by the same health delivery system but without similar beliefs were selected for comparison. The study population consisted of all active cases of epilepsy where seizures started before age 20 and were not complicated by preexisting psychological problems or mental retardation (46 Navajos and 42 Pueblos). As predicted, Navajos were found to have social and emotional problems more often than Pueblos. Navajos exhibited problems prior to age 14 significantly more often, and significantly more Navajo females had severe problems. Navajo parents withdrew from the epileptic child; Pueblo parents treated their epileptic children as normally as possible. Special health education programs are not offered either to families or to schools, and mental health staff are not notified until emotional problems are clearly present. AbstractThis article argues that the forms of psychopathology encountered among the members of any cultural group are products of that culture's historical experience and often are expressed in unique cultural forms. This challenges the therapist to modify his or her approach to treatment so that the patient will receive maximum benefit from therapy. We discuss a variation of dysthymic disorder that occurs among Navajo adolescents who live in agency towns on the Navajo reservation. We have called it “synergistic dual anomic depression” because of the unique constellation of cultural factors present in the environment of young Navajos who are affected by this disorder. We also discuss the successful treatment of one patient whom we diagnosed as suffering from this disorder. The treatment was culturally oriented in that it was based on the approach of Navajo medicine men toward working with the extended family. AbstractThis paper reports the results of an epidemiologic survey of alcohol use in a native American community in Alaska in 1979. The survey was conducted in order to study the relationships between drinking patterns and social and cultural changes that have occurred in the area during the past decade. A 10% representative sample of the population was interviewed, asked to complete the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST), and to draw a picture of a person. AbstractIn many programs, the introduction of students to the community is relegated to a single practicum experience. This paper reviews one program's attempt to integrate field training more thoroughly into the curriculum. This is done by building the program around the setting features of a particular community. We describe how the basic training goals that have often been advocated but rarely achieved by community psychologists might be more broadly implemented. We outline the underlying training model, describe critical setting features, and show how the program has emphasized the features of history, empowerment, and size in the development of the curriculum. The discussion considers the assets and liabilities of programs focusing on a particular community and setting in order to illustrate the importance and difficulty of implementing field training models of this kind.

AbstractDiscussions of graduate education in community psychology often have failed to note that undergraduate psychology programs exercise a crucial gatekeeping function by helping to shape students' attitudes about areas for subsequent study. Integrating concepts and methods of community psychology in undergraduate curricula is proposed as a change strategy to improve the viability of community psychology as a discipline. The Applied and Community Psychology Internship at Rutgers University is presented as a case example of a vehicle for providing this integration. Evidence is provided that students emerge from the internship primed for subsequent study and practice from a community perspective.
