AbstractExplored in this study are the pre‐ and posttreatment differences in clients going to clinics and patients going to hospitals for treatment. As expected, clients were found to be better adjusted initially than their hospitalized counterparts, and both groups showed more improvement in symptoms than in their instrumental role functioning. Unexpected was the finding that hospitalized patients (especially females) showed more improvement than clinic clients, when the pretreatment adjustment differences between groups were controlled. AbstractMutuality of patient‐therapist expectations for treatment can be attained by adapting treatment to the special characteristics and focusing treatment on the unique problems of client populations. Culturally sensitive treatment is defined as a treatment mode built on a set of therapeutic assumptions that complements the patients' basic value structure. The implications for treatment of the Cuban immigrants' preference for lineality in interpersonal relationships, a present‐time orientation, a doing activity orientation, and subjugation to natural and environmental conditions are discussed. Acculturation problems facing Cuban immigrant families and their implications for treatment are also discussed. AbstractCurrent investigations of telephone crisis intervention effectiveness have neglected the evaluation of broad patterns of interaction between the crisis center and the larger community. This study describes the development and implementation of a Caller Frequency Category System (CAFS) which is based upon the frequency and type of contacts between callers and the center. Data collected for 100 clients from a crisis intervention center suggest that the system can be applied reliably and does differentiate among clients by the type of interaction they have with the center. Two unexpected findings were that (a) longer‐term callers tended to be older men or teenage girls, and (b) the greatest proportion of total telephone use involved calls initiated by the center itself to people other than crisis clients. AbstractThree successive groups of prospective hotline workers were randomly assigned to three different pretraining conditions. Nine microcounseling participants received training in the use of attending behavior, open invitations to talk, paraphrasing, and reflection of feeling during a weekend workshop. Six sensitivity training participants were exposed to an unstructured weekend experience designed to develop interpersonal skills. Nine participants received no weekend experience. All participants then received six evenings of routine technical training over a six‐week period. Post‐training pseudocalls were audiotaped for all participants. Participant responses were rated for empathy, and assessed on the Therapist Error Checklist, and on three specific counselor response categories. Microcounseling participants emitted more “good” responses and were rated as more empathic than both the sensitivity and control groups. Both sensitivity and microcounseling participants emitted more open invitations to talk than control participants. AbstractTwenty‐eight female and 28 male college students responded to a survey questionnaire that tapped various kinds of knowledge and sentiments about women's centers. Regardless of sex, subjects held similar perceptions about the political orientation of women's centers. AbstractThe community mental health ideologies of groups composed of professional and non‐professional mental health service providers were measured by use of the Baker‐Schulberg Community Mental Health Ideology (CMHI) Scale. The study was designed to: (1) compare current CMHI scores with the original criterion scores of mental health workers, (2) compare CMHI scores of mental health workers from different disciplines who work in the same community mental health setting, and (3) measure CMHI scores for previously nonreported workers, ministers, and board and care operators. Results of the present study indicate that CMHI scores had not changed from the criterion scores over a series of studies, and that score consistency is such that the scale appears to be a reliable discriminatory tool. Contrary to previously reported findings, psychiatrists scored as high as other mental health professionals in the system, and no significant difference was found between disciplines within the professional group. The paraprofessional group, however, ranked significantly lower than the professional group. Clerical and administrative staff, and board and care operators had CMHI scores that were significantly lower than all other study groups. Interestingly, the minister group had a mean score higher than all other groups studied. AbstractConcurrent validity data for the Depression Adjective Check List (DACL Form‐E) were obtained by correlating the DACL with 18 self‐report and 18 family report measures that seem to be related to the depression construct. Of a sample of 611 consecutive adult applicants to an urban community mental health center, 387 cases on which there were complete data for patients and a family member were analyzed. AbstractSeventy outpatients at a community mental health center completed the Self‐Rating Depression scale, additional questions about their symptoms, and the Restraint Scale which measures attitudes about eating and dieting. The data indicated that some patients gained (not lost) weight during depression and this appears related to their being restrained eaters. The results also suggested that some patients sleep or nap more (not less) during depression while some use drinking as a coping mechanism for depression. AbstractThe effects of husbands' and wives' attitudes toward maternal occupational status on family climate were investigated. Attitudes of husbands or wives examined singly failed to show an effect on family climate.
