AbstractOver the past three years the Worcester Youth Guidance Center has developed a series of mental health programs directed to the Hispanic community of Worcester, Massachusetts. The model for these programs has been that of strategic intervention. This approach was based upon knowledge gained from the literature and extensive exploratory contacts with key Hispanic leaders. The Center's Hispanic Program consists of five components: (1) community education and training, (2) clinical consultation, (3) program consultation, (4) research, and (5) clinical intervention and case management. This article describes these components in detail and presents a rationale for strategic intervention.

AbstractThe problem of interorganizational interaction was reviewed in terms of organizational structure and process, organizational size, and domain consensus between organizations. In order to determine the relationship between these factors and interorganizational interaction, interview data were gathered from personnel in a sample of 27 social service agencies. Cluster analysis results indicated a strong relationship between relationships of goal/task similarity and the degrees of interorganizational interaction reported by staff of these service agencies. There were negligible relationships between interorganizational relations, organization size, and internal organizational structures and processes, respectively. Conceptual and practical implications were discussed.

AbstractThis study examined the outcome of a police‐training program with a general‐systems‐based community psychology orientation. A course evaluation questionnaire and a 52‐item attitude questionnaire were administered. The response of the Police Department as a social system was also considered. On the basis of the results of this procedure, the following conclusions were made: (1) the participants found the course valuable, interesting, and approved the format and content of the course; (2) the participants developed a heightened psychological sense of community with Aborigines and the mentally ill which was maintained over a year later; (3) the participants developed a decreased psychological sense of community with homosexuals which dissipated over the year's time; and (4) the Queensland Police Department will use this course as a model for all future training of inspectors and will use elements of this course at the cadet‐training level. The more general implications of our study are that: (1) a community psychology approach to police‐psychologist collaboration is possibly more efficient than other approaches in that negative or undesirable incidents are less likely to occur; (2) evaluation in terms of at least one community psychology construct is a possible and functional framework within which to view police‐psychologist

AbstractA police‐community relations program in elementary schools, called the “Officer Friendly Program,” was evaluated. The program attempted to increase awareness of legitimate services performed by the police and to improve rapport with uniformed police officers. Males (second graders) who used a “Crime Resistance Activity Book” or had the book and officer visits in their classes were more likely than a control group to represent officers as helping someone in a situation where a crime had occurred. Females did not change their beliefs about a police officer's role as a result of degree of participation in the program. Also, white children (male and female) who had officer visits stood closer to an unfamiliar police officer during a conversation than those who did not have officer visits (i.e., control or book‐alone conditions). These results were not found for black children. Previous writers have been either unduly optimistic or pessimistic about the possible impact of police‐community relations programs in the schools. Results of this study show that beneficial effects of an Officer Friendly Program relate to child's sex and race as well as to the type of evaluation

AbstractA questionnaire devised to measure preferences for training of bachelor's level psychologists was mailed to 302 community mental health center (CHMC) directors in the southeastern United States; 117 or 39% completed and returned questionnaires. Based on the preferences of CMHC directors, bachelor's level candidates for employment in CMHCs should manifest the following: (1) a good foundation in generic “core” psychology theory; (2) training in fundamental intervention skills in the areas of group, family, and individual counseling/psychotherapy and consultation; plus crisis intervention and intake interviewing; (3) specialized training/experiences in working with such high priority groups as disadvantaged blacks, the physically disabled, and alcohol/drug abusers; (4) knowledge of community resources and skill in publicizing/public relations; and (5) personal characteristics that include personal warmth, a neat personal appearance, and good oral and written communication ski

AbstractIn this study, the perceptions of unilateral terminators, “dropouts,” of their visit to a community mental health center were examined. A telephone survey was conducted to assess client satisfaction, impressions of the setting and therapist, helpfulness of the visit, expectations of and reported services received, and source and degree of problem(s) solution. Forty‐seven respondents participated in the survey. Seventy percent were satisfied with the service they received. Satisfaction was related to favorable perceptions of the setting, the therapist, helpfulness of the visit, and whether improvement was due to contact with the center. Almost 80% of the respondents reported their problems had improved. Expectations of services to be rendered were generally met. Meeting of expectations was related to client satisfaction and perceived helpfulness but not to problem solution. Center impact was related to client satisfaction, mode of entry, meeting of clients' expectations, and number of services received. The study suggests that unilateral client termination is not a failure of the client or the intervention system. AbstractThe relationship between the fit of the church/synagogue member with his/her congregation and the psychosocial competence of the member was studied. The religious leader from each of 12 congregations (four Jewish, four Protestant, and four Roman Catholic) nominated approximately six members who fit well within the congregation (central members) and six members who fit less well (peripheral members) according to a set of guidelines. One hundred thirty‐three (133) congregation members, 77 central and 56 peripheral, participated. Central and peripheral members displayed significantly different psychosocial competence characteristics. However, neither central nor peripheral members manifested uniformly greater effectiveness across all of the competence scales. Specifically, central members indicated greater satisfaction with their congregation, a greater sense of control by God, and a lower level of efficacy, coping skills, and sense of control by chance. The findings suggest to change agents that the process of helping an individual fit within a system may be associated with negative as well as positive consequences for his/her effective functioning. This view conflicts with the notion that fit corresponds to psychological well‐being, and points to the importance of studying the relationship between fit and multidimensional criteria of psychosocial competence across a variety of setti

AbstractThis study was designed to identify factors that influence the decision to call someone mentally ill, and to determine some attitudinal correlates of such labelling. Members of the general public and mental health professionals were queried on their views about etiologies of mental illness, circumstances in which they would call someone mentally ill, and opinions about restricting occupational choices of the formerly hospitalized. Results showed considerable agreement between lay respondents and mental health professionals. The label of mental illness was applied by both groups with considerably greater restraint than was anticipated on the basis of prior research. Across issues, two patterns of response emerged: some respondents believe that mental illness is a real entity, apply the label to a wide range of behavior, regard hospitalization as the best course of action and restrict the occupational choices of the formerly hospitalized. At the other extreme is a subset of respondents who regard hospitalization as objectionable in principle, who narrowly define mental illness and who are unlikely to restrict the career choices of the formerly hospitalized. These findings are related to previous work in the field.

AbstractThe university student volunteer as a social change agent is in a period of transition. There is no returning to the idealism and activism of the 1960s if this and future generations of students continue to see self‐preservation and individual advancement as their only viable option here in America. In view of the changing nature of today's students, the conventional definitions of volunteers, such as Shultz's (1972) altruist, average, and pseudo‐volunteer, must be reconsidered. Does the acceptance of minimal pay or demand for academic credit preclude one's being a true altruist? Further, is altruism a necessary or sufficient condition of voluntarism? While we must attempt to answer these questions, the purpose here was to suggest viable first steps in reviving and enhancing student voluntarism. Some of the most salient points are: (1) Student volunteers provide critically needed services to the community, (2) Students are increasingly demanding tangible personal and educational gains for services through voluntarism, (3) Faculty support is vital to student voluntarism and they should be encouraged to actively design their classes to integrate classroom theory and practice through volunteering, and (4) The community agencies served should be active participants in the faculty, student, agency triad, and not merely passive recipients of services. The future of student voluntarism must be viewed in the larger context of changes occurring in the society‐at‐large, such as cynicism, mistrust of authority figures and leaders, and a move away from altruism and toward symbiosis and/or individualism. There is widespread disillusionment with “band‐aid” approaches to solving enormous social problems, i.e., trying to help the few while some of society's most fundamental structures guarantee the perpetuation of poverty, crime, and general anomie. The rekindling of the ideology of cooperative altruism will take ingenuity and tireless effort.
