摘要:
AbstractThe importance of social networks in community mental health is explored. A distinction is made between natural and devised social networks. The development of liaison specialist and case manager roles as coordinators and links between clients and social networks indicates the values of ecological interventions.

摘要:
AbstractThe effects of four different intensities of prevention programs (including no program at all) were compared in a field setting. Forty urban seventh graders with school adjustment problems were randomly assigned to one of three prevention programs or to a no program group. Half of the students participated for one hour on two mornings per week throughout the school year; the other half of the students participated in the afternoons. The results showed that program intensity had a significant effect upon grades and observed classroom behavior in the morning programs. No such effect occurred in the afternoon programs. The effects in the morning were preventive (versus rehabilitative) in nature. Only the most intense program, which included parent contact, had a greater effect than no program at all. The implications of these results for school‐based interventions are discusse

摘要:
AbstractTo assess community awareness of a community mental health center, a telephone survey was conducted, using a random stratified sample. In order to provide comparative analyses, two other mental health agencies were included in the study. Five specific issues were addressed: (a) the percentage of the population that was aware of the agencies, (b) inter‐agency comparisons, (c) heterogeneity of awareness levels among geographic areas, (d) the relative merit of different sources of information, and (e) the relationship between awareness and demographic factors. The results indicated relatively high levels of awareness for the three agencies (X̄ = 57%). There were, however, significant differences in awareness levels between agencies and between geographic areas. The source of information cited most often by respondents was the newspaper; in addition, there was an effect for the primary agency's storefront office. Sex, education, and family size had significant but weak correlations with the amount of accurate information a respondent possessed. The results provided substantive answers to the agency's concerns as well as methodological guidelines for future evaluations of community awarene

摘要:
AbstractThis study describes the variety of problems reported by clients seeking the services of a large urban community mental health center and explores the extent to which these problems are related to three sets of variables: client demographic characteristics, system entry, and system response. A 10% random sample totaling 273 case files was examined. The most frequently reported problem area was interpersonal followed by drug/alcohol abuse and cognitive disturbance. Clients' presenting problem was significantly related to all three sets of variables. Implications for planning service delivery are discussed with emphasis on identifying both unique and shared center responses to presenting problems, client characteristics, and system entry factors.

摘要:
AbstractThis study investigated parents' perceptions and demographic variables in relation to dropout rates and the perceived usefulness of parent education groups. Changes in parents' perceptions of themselves and their families following the groups were also assessed. Thirty‐one parents volunteered to participate in the nine‐session groups, which included both behavior modification and communication training components. Thirteen parents failed to complete the groups. Parents who dropped out of the groups initially reported they were happier within their family, happier with their child management skills, and more patient than the parents who completed the groups. Parents who finished treatment, but who felt the groups were relatively less useful, were found to have a lower income, older children, and children who had more difficulty understanding their pare

摘要:
AbstractThe relationships between relatively low utilization rates for non‐whites and catchment area demography and center service characteristics were examined for 142 federally funded community mental health centers. Center characteristics were less strongly related to relative utilization by non‐whites than were area demographic characteristics. Several characteristics of the black population were among those most highly associated with relative non‐white utilization

摘要:
AbstractDuring the past seven years, Southwest Denver Community Mental Health Services, Inc., has made use of an alternative network of families in lieu of psychiatric hospitalization. This particular article focuses on its key operational aspects and considers recruitment, screening, and support structures which have enabled the project to become a viable community mental health center program. In addition, there is a discussion of the limitations of the system and how it might be integrated with psychiatric hospital services.

摘要:
AbstractThe impressions that laypeople have of particular treatment procedures presumably affect the acceptance and application of those procedures. Previous research suggests that behavioral therapies are perceived less favorably than humanistic therapies. In this study, mental health professionals' and university students' reactions to behavioral and humanistic therapy labels were measured along specific dimensions (e.g., warmth, effectiveness) of evaluation. Results indicated that both students and professionals perceived humanistic therapies as warmer and more friendly, but behavior therapies were rated as more effective. Thus, both behavioral and humanistic therapies are sometimes perceived favorably, but from different perspectives. Implications for community applications are discussed.

摘要:
AbstractVariability between day hospital programs in goals of treatment, administrative affiliation, staff, patients, and treatment modalities make generalizations concerning the effectiveness of treatment difficult, if not impossible. However, the available reports of evaluation of day hospital effectiveness suggest that such treatment is comparable to both inpatient and outpatient mental health treatment in effecting symptomatic and social change and these effects may be more long‐lasting than those obtained in the more traditional treatment settings. Moreover, day hospital treatment may, probably because it provides an alternative to hospitalization, reduce the likelihood of hospitalization following discharge from treatmen

摘要:
AbstractInnovative training programs can provide police departments with junior officers who have demonstrated competency in a large number of specific police skills. Lacking measures of field performance and programs to maintain performance standards, the ultimate effectiveness of training cannot be assessed. Process measures of performance are generally too obtrusive and disruptive to be useful. Outcome measures are less obtrusive. Such measures can sample either readily observable performances (report writing, crisis intervention, and court appearance measures) or typically unobserved activities (tachograph/activity sheet measure and the citizen survey measure). Maintenance of performance standards based on these measures can be assessed through a system of frequent supervision and feedback. Indeed, the measures can be used to empirically establish realistic performance standards for officers in the field. Finally, development of several outcome measures can provide field sergeants with adequate tools for active supervision and can form the basis for objective performance‐based personnel evaluation
