摘要:
AbstractOver 40% of elders are estimated to engage in organizational volunteering. Research on older volunteers' motives is hampered by the tendency of investigators to analyze data on an item‐by‐item basis. In the present study, we examined the implications of taking unidimensional and multidimensional approaches to aggregating motive items for predicting elders' intent to continue volunteering. The sample consisted of 242 community service volunteers who resided in a retirement community area (minimum age = 5 years old). The results indicated that motives for volunteering were better predictors of intent to continue volunteering when the multidimensional (as opposed to unidimensional) approach to aggregation was used. Valueexpressive motive scores were found to be significantly related to intent only for volunteers who were high on both knowledge and social‐adjustive motive s

摘要:
AbstractThe influence of perceived social support on differential graduation rates of African‐American and White students at a predominantly White university was assessed through path analysis. In the path model, precollege academic performance, first‐year college grade‐point average (CGPA), and general adjustment variables were hypothesized to affect graduation. Although this initial model provided an adequate fit to the data, the direct path from social support to CGPA was not significant. In a revised model, only the influence of CGPA directly influenced graduation. Further research must be conducted to clarify the interaction of academic and social‐behavioral variables in influencing graduation p

摘要:
AbstractTest performance of three groups of urban 4th‐ through 6th‐graders – highly stressed children with stress‐resilient (SR) or stress‐affected (SA) adjustment outcomes, and demographically matched nonclassified (NC) peers – from 2‐year cohorts, was compared on measures used both to select SRs and SAs and to expand the definitional net for childhood resilience. On adjustment‐selection and verification measures, SRs exceeded NCs and NCs exceeded SAs. On the criterion test measures, both SRs and N

摘要:
AbstractA substantial amount of research on homeless mentally ill individuals within the last 5 years has clarified their numbers, characteristics, and service needs. Research is lacking, however, on effective service models. A Mental Health Linkage model is presented, derived from practice principles in the literature, including outreach, community integration of mental health services, and meeting clients on their terms. The model is described and data on client characteristics and service operations are presented from three demonstration sites. Significant differences in client characteristics were found, indicating the heterogeneity of this population across different community contexts. When evaluated against practice principles and the program's intent, research results suggest the model's success in serving the target group by providing them with linkage and housing. Barriers identified through the demonstration projects' experiences are substantial, however, and warn of the challenges that services to homeless mentally ill individuals face within mental health agencies and within their communities.

摘要:
AbstractThe present study used cluster analysis to empirically derive and cross‐validate a system for classifying homeless persons on the basis of their service needs. Variables used in the subgroup identification phase of the study included psychopathology, alcoholism, social support, socioeconomic status, and health status. Four subgroups were identified: (1) an economically disadvantaged group, (2) an alcoholic group, (3) a mentally ill group, and (4) a relatively advantaged group. Subsequent analysis revealed few differences between the four groups in background characteristics. Moreover, subgroups were similar in service willingness and utilization, with the exception of utilization and willingness to receive treatment for alcohol and mental health problems. The results suggest the need for policies and services that address the core socioeconomic needs that cut across all subgroups, as well as for additional, specialized services for those with psychiatric or alcohol problem

摘要:
AbstractCentral Americans are one of the fastest growing immigrant groups in the United States, yet little is known about their adjustment to life in this country. Research with previous immigrant groups has suggested that informal support networks play a significant role in newcomers' adjustment process. In the present study, 91 recently arrived Central American immigrants were interviewed concerning the circumstances of their immigration into this country, characteristics of their networks in this country, and the adjustment of family members since arriving. Results indicate that although the networks of these individuals tend to be dense and provide a great deal of support, they may have an insulating effect that diminishes immigrants' interaction with the larger community. These findings are discussed in light of the larger issue of the receptivity of the host community to newcomers.

摘要:
AbstractA recent National Institute of Mental Health workshop examined several prominent conceptual models as guides to high‐quality preventive intervention research. The conceptual models were compared in terms of four methodological issues, i.e., specifying outcomes to be measured, specifying risk factors or change mechanisms, identifying intervention participants, and designing interventions. This article highlights answers to the methodological linkage questions from the point of view of various models and their implications for preventive intervention researc
