摘要:
AbstractResearchers have noted the difficulties of conducting surveys, one of the most widely used techniques for collecting social science data, in minority communities. These difficulties include low response rates, interviewer bias, and the development of adequate sampling strategies to tap diverse segments within minority communities and locate specific segments of the population, such as male respondents. Efforts to minimize these difficulties in the implementation of an epidemiological, field‐based survey of 1,018 Black American adults are describe

摘要:
AbstractA 118‐item survey assessed prevalence of bulimic symptomatology and examined multiple psychological health‐related correlates in a sample of 2,042 midwestern high school females. Students completed the Bulimia Test (BULIT), Trait Anxiety Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, a General Self‐ Efficacy subscale, a Specific (eating) Self‐Efficacy Scale, and the Goldfarb Fear of Fat Scale. Based on BULIT scores, 6.3% fell in the high symptom group, 9.3% fell in the moderate symptom group, and 84.4% fell in the low symptom group. High symptom group membership was equally common across high school grades, and racial differences were not found. Most high symptom students reported binge eating and self‐induced vomiting at least weekly as well as depression, anxiety, fear of fat, and low self‐efficacy. Specific self‐efficacy and fear of fat were most strongly correlated with the BULIT and, along with depression, were the three most potent multivariate predictors of the bulimic symptom group. 摘要:
AbstractThis study examines the relations between the type and function of support networks and the self‐perceptions of 63 mothers of young, disabled children. The mothers reported significantly more instrumental as well as emotional support from informal than formal networks. Satisfaction with support was related to the mother's sense of her parenting competence and her ability to balance multiple role demands. Mothers of more severely disabled children were less satisfied with the support received and had fewer friends or family upon whom they relied. Those with more family resources (such as a parenting partner or higher educational level) described using more formal supports. Community planning efforts for working with parents of disabled children may promote their clients' investment in and satisfaction with parenting by enhancing effective utilization of informal support network

摘要:
AbstractIn this article we examine differences between Mexican Americans and non‐Hispanic Whites, and between U.S.‐ and Mexico‐born Mexican Americans, in exposure to two sources of stress: life events and ongoing strains. Data were obtained from a survey of 1,244 Mexican‐American and 1,149 non‐ Hispanic White randomly selected community residents. There were few ethnic differences in life events, although non‐Hispanic Whites were more likely to report desirable or ambiguous events. Mexican‐American immigrants were less likely than their U.S.‐born counterparts to report most events. In contrast, Mexican Americans, especially immigrants, reported greater ongoing strain than non‐Hispanic Whites. Different kinds of life events were associated with ea

摘要:
AbstractMany have argued that problems with housing contribute to the high relapse rate among chronic mentally ill patients. Evidence that homelessness is associated with rehospitalization suggests that interventions for housing can reduce relapse rates. In this study, the relative importance of housing services versus psychiatric factors as determinants of rehospitalization, emergency room use, and aftercare compliance is examined. The analysis investigates the relative importance of housing within a community that has high rates of homelessness versus a comparison community with low homelessness rates. Results indicate that when patients need both housing and psychiatric care, services for housing make the critical difference for community tenure.

摘要:
AbstractIn this study, homeless men and nonhomeless men who are having difficulty maintaining permanent housing and economic stability are compared with respect to their established social networks and their use of such networks. The study also identifies family background factors that relate to differential network utilization. Significant differences were found indicating that the homeless had smaller social networks than did controls and used them less. Relationships were also found between family history variables and network utilization. These results inform attempts at primary prevention in individuals at risk for homelessness and suggest needed interventions for the homeless.

摘要:
AbstractFifty‐six newly separated, volunteer participants (40 women, 16 men) were examined to determine if depressive symptomatology (as measured by the CES‐D) was related to the respondent's active participation in the decision to separate from the spouse (initiator status) and the proportion of family members in their social support network. The relationship between initiator status and depressive symptomatology was marginally significant,F(l, 50) = 3.93,p= 0.053. There was an interaction between initiator status and the proportion of family members in the social network. For initiators, a low proportion of family members was related to increased depressive symptomatology (r= 0.15), whereas for noninitiators, a low proportion of family members was related to increased depressive symptomatology (r= ‐ 0.37), a difference significant atp<.04. It is suggested that the functional ability of the network to be supportive is mediated both by aspects of the individual in need of support and by structural aspects of the ne
