AbstractPHYLIP, PAUP, and HENNIG 86 include programs designed for inferring all most parsimonious trees of relationships from observed character patterns. These programs failed to do this in the case of a rather simple, non‐encaptic character pattern and, hence, are not reliable. Especially, all programs failed to discriminate trees displaying identical branching modes and differing exclusively in the modes of assuming origins and losses of characters. Additionally, PHYLIP and PAUP violated the principle of logical parsimony by not accepting polytomies within a tree.
