SummarySome problems of mammalian phylogeny; on the phylogenetic relationships, their methods and problemsA comparison of the various methods (morphology, biochemistry, serology, karyology, parasitology and ethology) as basis for taxonomical and phylogenetic researchs permits only the application of apomorph homologies. Only several characters, structures etc. of “monophyletic” origin are giving sure results. Further, we can never base classification on phylogeny, but from our classification we can reconstruct the phylogeny. Anatomical series, serological or karyo‐logical diagramms, ethological dendrogramms or genealogical trees of dentition in the pale‐of morphological, physiological or ethological characters, without that this evolution must ontology as results of comparison of singular characters give in the best manner the evolution correspond to the phylogeny, which is to see following the mosaic‐modus of phylogenetic evolution, proved by fossil founds.Consequently, serological, biochemical, karyological, parasitological and ethological reports are never alone sufficient as basis for a clear statement about relationships. But they give to us – after elimination of various eventualities of faults – extraordinarily important supplementary criteria, especially in such cases, of which the relationships in morphological manner are firmly covered by extrem features of adaptations. In such cases serology and biochemistry may become of special importance corresponding to the differentiation of albumen, which is smaller in comparison of that of adaptive evolution: The Pinnipeds are after the serological affinities members of the Arctoidea among the Fissipedia. The Whales and Dolphins have serological and karyological affinities to primitive Artiodactyls, because they are descending from condylarthran Ungulates of the Paleogene and non of Carnivores. After the karyological evolution,Callimico goeldiis a primitive callitrichid primate and non a spezialised cebid monkey. Ethological criteria show, thatNeofelis nebulosais a member of the Felinae.
SummaryThe brains of Anteaters, Sloth and Armadillos are compared. This examination of the outer morphologie shows:1. Each of the recent families of Edentata represents a definite type of brain. The Brady‐ podidae show differences between Choloepus and Bradypus. Chlarnyphorus is an exeption within the Dasypodidae.2. Brain‐measurements are illustrating shape. They show changes of proportion correlated with brain‐size (Myrmecophagidae ‐ Dasypodidae), and special positions of single species (Chlamyphorus).3. The position of the Fissura rhinalis on the lateral side of the hemisphere has a typical character in the three families.4. The olfactory system of the Dasypodidae and Myrmecophagidae is specielly well developed, less that of the Bradypodidae.5. The Myrmecophagidae exemplify the intensity of the fissures increasing with increasing brain‐size. Out of the dependence on size the neopallial development seems to be the greatest for the Myrmecophagidae. The theorie of the origin of fissures depending on brain‐size and neopallial development is discussed.6. Only the Myrmecophagidae have a “basal neocortex”, which can be considered as a possible sign of a higher evolutionary level.7. The tectum of all studied Edentata is completely covered. The results define the three families as to their brains and they show also their allied unity. The results accord with those of ROHRS(1966): Edentata have a osition above Marsupialia and Insectivora and below Carniv

SummaryOn the systematics and the evolution of variation and distributional patterns in the species and subspecies of the genus Pungitius Coste, 1848 (Pisces, Gasterosteidae)1. In the genusPungitius(similarly as inGasterosteus) there seems to be of some interest the bony armature, especially from the zoogeographical point of view. These lateral bony shields are developed in the skin (instead of scales which are completely lacking in the family of Gasterosteidae) and are more or less present just as to the provenance of the individuals.2. Preponderantly with respect to this bony armature several species and subspecies have been distinguished in the genusPungitius, the variability, distribution and systematics of which are critically reviewed and compared in the present paper on the basis of museum material and data from the literature.3. For the sake of adequate interpretation of modern distributional patterns there may be assumed an originally fully armoured type at the end of the Tertiary from which (after having escaped the ice by southward migration) during the Pleistocene period in several refugial areas new species or subspecies have derived, partially by reduction of the bony armature under freshwater conditions. During postglacial times these subspecies penetrated different areas but in some localities also produced mixed populations ofter having contacted within the same region. At least in some cases this may have led to subsequent hybridization.4. The speciesP. platygasterin its modern distribution in the ponto‐caspi‐aralic region is now geographically isolated from the holarctic‐circumpolarly distributedP. pungitiusin its recent subspeciespungitiuswith reduced bony armature. Of this latter (originally fully armoured) species populations are assumed to have penetrated, at latest during the penultimate (= Riß) glaciation the Caspian Sea and subsequently the Black Sea and Lake Aral. These populations are the assumed ancestors of the nowaday still fully armouredP. platygaster. A decision as to the real degree of differentiation between the recentP. pungitiusandP. platygasterhas to be left to future crossbreeding experiments the results of which will possibly lead to a subspecies concept only.5. In contrast to the foregoing the fully plated original type ofP. pungitiusunderwent a serious reduction in its bony armature especially in the Southwest European refugium which led to a total loss of bony shields in the subspeciesP. p. laevis.6. As may be concluded from the now occurring types, this reduction seems to have been generally less pronounced in the East Asiatic refugium. We are confronted here, probably as a result of postglacial spread with the occurrence of three subspecies within the same area, i. e. the fullyarmouredP. p. sinensison the one hand, andP. p. tymensiswith reduced lateral plates (and also reduced lateral processes of the pubic bones in the pelvis girdle) and the holarctic‐circumpolarly distributedP. p. pungitiuswith likewise reduced bony armature on the other hand. Of these subspecies the fully platedsinensisseems in its appearance to approach best what we perhaps may imagine as the original type ofP. pungitiusat the end of the

Afrika scheint also keine autochthonen Muriden zu besitzen. Fossilienfunde und tiergeographische Tatsachen stiitzen diese Ansicht.SummaryAspects of the Origin and Distribution of the MuridaeImportance of the Systematic Position of the OtominaeIf it is right that the typical african groups of Dendromurinae, Petromyscinae and Cricetomyinae – formerly all considered as Muridae – are Cricetids and that the African Otomyinae – as stated here – are not Murids, the Murinae are the only remaining “true” Muridae of Africa. These, however are probably of Southeast Asian origin and are relative lately immigrated in Africa. Africa therefore seems to have no autochthonous Muridae. This opinion is supported by fossils and zo

SummaryThe developmental study of the skull reveals the following views: The elapid chondrocranium represents a very advanced ophidian type. It more resembles the viperid chondrocranium than the colubrid one. The viperid chondrocranium is only very slightly more advanced than that of the Elapidae. The viperid osteocranium has progressed still further in the development of the poison apparatus than has the elapid osteocranium. The developmental study of the skull advocates the opinion that the family Colubridae has given rise to the family Elapidae, and the Elapidae (or at least the ancestral Elapidae) has given rise to the family Viperidae.

Zusammenfassung1. SummarySome additional functional aspects of the “Gastraea‐Coelom‐Theorie” are given.1. The coelomic epithelium lines the body layers in which the blood of the closed circulatory system is flowing and in which the collagenous fibres are formed.2. Some important functional consequences of the transformation of the coelom in different animal phyla are given. The coelom shrinks and is reduced when dorsoventral muscles are formed in creeping animals (Mollusca, Nemertini, Myzostomida). The coelomic epithelium is reduced when a haemolymph system is formed (Nemathelminthes, Arthropoda, Mollusca). Coelomic cavities are differentiated according to inner organs requiring freedom of move‐ ment. Vestiges of the larger coelom can be retained in a gliding system function a pericards (Vertebrata, Mollusca).3. It is shown that the initial evolution of the coelom and its modifications in the bodv archi‐ tectures of different coelomates must be explained by the unevitable functional conse4uences. Functional interpretations of body architecture are obligatory.4. Discussions about the definition of the coelom, true metamerism, and pseudometamerism should be replaced by the description of morphological and functional modifications.5. Some of the arguments SIEWINGput forward against the functional interpretation of the evolution of coelomates (“Gastraea‐Coelom‐Theory”) are refuted. There is no strict corre‐ lation of coelom and the hydraulic function. The hydrostatic skeleton was evolved earlier than the coelom which lateron became a specialised fluid‐filling of the locomotory system. The mechanical function of the coelom can be retained when the coelomic epithelium is reduced; a hy
