AbstractAn attempt was made to review the presently used terms for types of the species‐group in zoology. Additional to the conventional types of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, the use of the terms isotype and allotype is discussed. While the allotype is considered not only useless but also confusing, the isotype is regarded to be a valuable addition to the set of zoological types of the species group.The nomenclatural status of the different types is discussed. The holotype is the only real type (group I), but may be. substituted by the neotype or lectotype (group II) in the case that there is no holotype available. Group III comprises syntypes, isotypes and paralectotypes, specimens out of which a neotype or lectotype is designated (in the case that there is no holotype available), with priority on any other material including specimens of group IV (allotype, paratypes). Group N comprises ordinary specimens without any nomenclatural status.To clarify the nomenclatural status of the different types, a new set of endings for the terms is suggested: ‐typefor groups I and II, ‐typidfor group III, and ‐typoidfor group IV.The stasis, or “stability”, of the presently used type system is compared with the continuous change in the species of the evolutionary species concept. The stable type is considered not only as a disadvantage, but also as a problem for future taxonomy. To solve this problem, a new term (plesiotype) is suggested and defined as a specimen indicating the present position of a species in comparison with the old holotype (which represents characters no longer present in the species). This plesiotype should be considered as a member of group N (status like an ordinary specimen; that means no nomenclatural status), and should get the ending ‐typoid. Zusätzlich zu den in den Internationalen Regeln für die zoologische Nomenklatur verwendeten Typen werdendie Terme »Isotypus« und »Allotypus» diskutiert. Während der Allotypus nicht nur als nutzlos, sondem auch als verwirrend betrachtet wird, bildet der Isotypus, der genetisch mit dem Holotypus identische Individuen bezeichnet (die im Fall asexueller Vermefkng oder Klonierung aukreten), eine wichtige Bereicherung der Typen der Artgruppe.Der nomenklatorische Status der verschiedenen Typen wird diskutiert. Der Holotypus ist der einzige wirkliche Typus (Gruppe I), kann aber ersetzt werden durch den Neotypus oder den Lectotypus (Gruppe II), im Fall, daß kein Holotypus verfügbar ist. Dabei haben Typen der Gruppe III Priorität vor jeglichem anderen Material, einchließlich Individuen der Gruppe IV (Allotypus, Paratypus). Gruppe IV enthält Individuen ohne jeglichennomenklatorischen Status. Um den nomenklatorischen Status der verschiedenen Typen klarzustellen, werden (für den englischen Sprachgebrauch, aber auch im Deutschen verwendbar) folgende Endungen vorgeschlagen: ‐typusfür Gruppe I und II,typidfü Gruppe III, undtypoidfü Gruppe IV.Das zur Zeit bebutzte Typussystem ist zeitlich gesehen statisch oder »stabil«. Dies wird verglichen mit dem evolutionären Artkonzept. Der stabile Typus wird als Nachteil und als ein großes Pmbfem für die künftige, in einigen Fällen auch schon für die heutige Taxonomie gesehen. Um dieses Problem zu lösen, wird der Term »Plesiotypus« eingefühxt. Ein Plesiotypus wird definiert als ein Individuum, das die jetzige Position einer Art (im Vergleich zum alten Holotypus) anzeigt, wenn der Holotypus Merkmale besitzt, die in der jetzigen Art nicht mehr vorhanden sind. Der Plesiotypus wird als ein Mitglied der die Endung ‐typoid. AbstractMonthly collections of Drosophilidae during a three years period, at a small area near Santiago, Chile, were analized by quantitative methods. The diversity analysis, the index of evenness and cluster analysis of the samples and species in time, shows that the community structure changes drastically through the year and, that each species has a clear seasonal pattern. Analyses of the niche breadths for each of the species indicate that the most common species (these are 8 out of the 17 species collected) are all most clear generalists, whereas the remaining 9 species appear rather narrow with regard to seasonality. The analyses of niche overlap revealed that there is a strong tendency for association between certain species. The recently introduced palearctic speciesD. subobscuratends to be more closely associated to the native species such asD. pavaniand the scaptomizids, than to the cosmopolitan species, such asD. simulansandD. melanogaster.ZusammenfassungAnalyse einer Drosophila‐Gemeinschaft an einem Standort in Zentral‐Chile über einen Zeitraum von drei JahrenMonatlicheDrosophila‐Fänge über einen Zeitraum von drei Jahren an einem Standort bei Santiago in Chile wurden mit quantitativen Methoden analysiert. Die Diversitätsanalyse, der Index für Gleich‐förmigkeit (eveness) und die Clusteranalyse der Stichproben bzw. der Artenzusammensetzung in der Zeit zeigen, daß sich die Struktur des Artenspektrums über das Jahr hinweg drastisch verädert und daß jede Art ein deutliches Jahreszeiten‐Muster hat. Die Analysen über die Nischenbreiten für jede der Arten weisen darauf hin, daß die häufigsten Arten (das sind 8 der 17 gefangenen Arten) in allen Fállen allgemeine Generalisten sind, während die verbleibenden 9 Arten durch ein ziemlich kurzes jahreszeitliches Auftreten gekennzeichnet sind. Die Analysen der Nischenüberlappungen ergeben, daß es eine strenge Tendenz für eine Assoziation zwischen bestimmten Arten gibt. AbstractAn attempt has been made to see how far taxonomic characters can be weighted by calculating their information content, as measured by methods due to Gyllenberg, Brillouin, and Shannonand Weaver. Thirty‐nine species and subspecies ofBatracomorphuswere defined initially by 104 qualitative: characters. Subsets of 25 characters with the highest information content were then selected and ordinations of the taxa were made by principal coordinate component analysis for each subset. These ordinations were then compared with others based on randomly selected subsets of 25 characters as well as on the entire reference set of 104 characters. The results show that subsets of 25 characters with high information content yield ordinations that are similar to that based on the entire set and differ from those derived from randomly selected subsets. It follows that classifications based on characters of high information content will be relatively stable, showing little change when other characters of low information content are also included. It also appears that the characters with high information content correspond well to those that have been weighted more heavily in traditional, non‐numerical classifications of the genus.ZusammenfassungInformationsgehalt als Kriterium für die Auswahl von Merkmalen für die numerische Taxonomie, dargestellt an einigen männlichen Tieren von Batracomorphus (Homoptera: Cicadellidae)Es wurde der Versuch unternommen, den Informationsgehalt taxonomischer Merkmale mit Hilfe der Berechnungsmethoden von Gyllenberg, Brillouinand Shannonand Weaverabzuschätzen. Zunächst wurden 39 Arten and Unterarten der GamingBatracomorphusaufgrund von 104 qualitativen Merkmalen definiert. Anschlieißend wurde eine Teilmenge von 25 Charakteren, die den höchsten Informationsgehalt hatten, ausgewählt und die Taxa nach einer Komponentenanalyse gruppiert. Diese Gruppierungen wurden dann mit anderen Anordnungen verglichen, die entweder auf 25 zufällig ausgewählten Merkmalen oder auf samtlichen 104 Merkmalen basierten.Die Ergebnisse zeigen, daß die Gruppierung aufgrund der 25 Merkmale mit hohem Informationsgehalt sehr ähnlich ist der, die auf sämtlichen Merkmalen beruht, aber von der Gruppierung nach 25 zufälligen Merkmalen verschieden ist.Daraus folgt, daß eine auf Merkmalen mit großern Informationsgehalt gestützte Klassifikation relativ stabil ist und sich wenig ändert, wenn andere Merkmale mit geringem Informationsgehalt mit einbezogen werden. AbstractStridulatory apparatus in some spiders – morphology and phylogenetic aspects12 different types of stridulatory apparatus are known in spiders. Within each type morphologically distinct structures are grouped together. The morphology of the Linyphiidae, Theridiidae, Mimetidae and Hahniidae is investigated by scanning electron‐microscopy. The most intensively researched stridulatory apparatus common to these families (Type d1) revealed the use of quite different elements especially in the construction of the plectra. Stridulatory apparatus of the same type which occur in these families can be described as convergencies and homoiologies. The change occurring in similar morphological elements can be understood in terms of the functional requirements in the positioning and movement of plectra to pars stridens. The phylogenetic development of the stridulatory apparatus can only proceed along a predetermined functional course, and therefore leads to the parallel development of similar organs within different families. In the case of the Linyphiidae it is demonstrated that even within single families indications of parallel evolution (convergency, parallel improvement) are present.ZusammenfassungDie Stridulationsorgane der Spinnen wHerrn Prof. Dr. G. Die Morphologic der Stridulationsorgane von Linyphiidae, Theridiidae, Mimetidae und Hahniidae wird anhand von REM‐Untersuchungen vorgestellt. Der schwerpunktmäßig untersuchte Stridulationsapparat Typ d1 zeigt bei diesen Familien eine Beteiligung ganz unterschiedlicher Elemente vor allem am Bau des Plectrons. Die Stridulationsorgane des gleichen Types können bei diesen Familien als konvergente oder homoiologe Bildungen beschrieben werden. Die Umwandlung teilweise gleicher morphologischer Elemente wird durch die funktionellen Anforderungen an Lagebezug und Beweglichkeit vom Plectron zu Pars stridens verständlich. Die phylogenetische Entwicklung der Stridulationsorgane kann nur auf bestimmten, funktionell bedingt vorgegebenen Wegen verlaufen und führt daher in den verschiedenen Familien parallel zu Organen des gleichen Types. Abstract1. Dentition and course of dental laminae in larval and adult hynobiid salamanders are described using scanning and light microscopy.2. As in other Urodela a developmental sequence can be observed from monocuspid undivided to monocuspid divided teeth in larvae to divided bicuspid teeth in metamorphosed specimens. In some larvae available both types of monocuspids were present, their replacements being divided.3. In larvae and adults one continuous dental lamina accompanies the upper jaw. In larvae a vomerine and a palatinal dental lamina, both separated by a distinct gap, accompany the bones at their lingual face; thus replacements are outward. In adults there is only one dental lamina (very likely the vomerine) buccal of the vomer with replacements occurring inward, thus being comparable to the conditions found in Plethodontidae. Obviously the anterior portion of the larval vomerine dental lamina grows out during metamorphosis and extends backwards accompanying a medial expansion of the vomer.4. Previous observations and the findings presented here (absence of two separated dental laminae in adults, disintegration of the palatinal dental lamina observed in some larvae) strongly support the assumption, that hynobiids possess a definitive vomer and not a vomeropalatinum.ZusammenfassungMorphologische Untersuchungen an der Mundhöhle von Urodelen. VIII. Die Zähne des Oberkiefers und des Munddaches von zwei Hynobius‐Arten (Hynobiidae: Amphibia)1. Bezahnung und Verlauf der Zahnleisten larvaler und adulter Hynobiiden werden anhand rasterelektronenmikroskopischer und lichtmikroskopischer Aufnahmen beschrieben.2. Wie bei anderen Urodelen entwickeln sich die Zähne von monocuspiden ungeteilten zu monocuspiden geteilten bei Larven (bei einigen Larven waren beide Zahntypen vorhanden, die Ersatzzähne jedoch ausnahmslos geteilt) zu geteilten bicuspiden bei metamorphosierten Tieren.3. Bei Larven und Adulten begleitet eine Zahnleiste lückenlos den Oberkiefer. Bei Larven begleitet je eine Zahnleiste den Vomer und das Palatinum auf der lingualen Seite; der Zahnersatz erfolgt in Richtung der Mundöffnung (nach außen). Bei Erwachsenen existiert nur noch eine Zahnleiste, sehr wahrscheinlich die des Vomers, auf der Buccalseite des Vomers; der Zahnersatz erfolgt nach innen. Diese Verhältnisse kommen auch bei Plethodontiden vor. Offenbar wächst der vordere Abschnitt der Vomerzahnleiste während der Metamorphose aus und begleitet den fast medial gelegenen nach caudal auswachsenden Vomer.4. Frühere Beobachtungen und die hier mitgeteilten Befunde (Fehlen von zwei getrennten Zahnleisten im Munddach der Adulten, Degeneration der Palatinumzahnleiste bereits vor der Metamorphose) stützen die Annahme, daß Hynobiiden einen definitiven Vomer, nicht jedoch ein Vomeropala

AbstractThe brain of the SirenianDugongis described. In gross and qualitative morphology, it appears to be lissencephalic, with reduced olfactory areas and small olfactory and optic nerves but large sensory trigeminal components. In detail and quantitatively, its total size and its neocortex betray a much lower evolutionary level than those of the river dolphinPlantanistataken for comparison. Its rhinencephalon is less reduced but its hippocampus is about as strikingly small as the dolphin's. Neither cerebellum nor mesencephalon point to any kind of specialization for aquatic life similar to that found in the dolphin. Although both animals are adapted to water by their general body morphology, the Sirenian seems to have remained far behind the Cetacean in its evolution in that direction from the viewpoints of progression and specialization.ZusammenfassungQualitative und quantitative Gehirnmorphologie der Sirene Dugong dugong Erxl.Die grobe Morphologie sowie quantitative Besonderheiten des Gehirns der SireneDugong dugongErxl. werden beschrieben. Sowohl in Einzelzügen der Gestalt als auch quantitativ, in der Gesamtgröße und jener der Neocortex zeigt sich, daß das Evolutionsniveau niedriger ist als beim FlußdeiphinPlatanista. Das Rhinencephalon ist beim Dugong weniger reduziert, aber der Hippocampus ebenso klein wie bei diesem Delphin. Weder Cerebellum noch Mesencephalon weisen irgendwelche Anzeichen einer Anpassung an das Leben im Wasser auf, die jenen des Delphins ähneln. Obwohl beide Tierarten in der allgemeinen Körperform Anpassungen an den Wasserhaushalt haben, bleiben die Sirenen in der Progression und Spezialisation des Gehirns hinter den Cetaceen
