SummaryThe principles of cladistic analysis of phylogenetic relationships are summarized. Evolution is treated as an axiom. Shared derived characters indicate phylogenetic relationships of semaphrodonts. Fossils are treated as terminal taxa. Cladograms differ from phylogenetic trees by implying nothing but relative degrees of phylogenetic relationships of fossil and extant semaphrodonts. Alternative phylogenetic hypotheses (cladograms) are evaluated by the application of the rule of parsimony rather than by a strict test in the sense of POPPER.RésuméLes principes du cladismLes principes de l'analyse cladistique des relations phylétiques sont exposés. Zusammenfassung1. Es wird eine Reihe ontogenetisch orientierter Arbeiten von Boniket al. (1978 ff.) kritisch be‐sprochen.2. Jede Analyse von Evolurionsprozessen hat Form und Funktion gleichwerrig zu berücksichtigen, da diese in gegenseitiger Abhängigkeit zueinander stehen.3. Ausdrücke wie “Anpassungsdruck”, “Funktionsdruck”, “energiesparende Anpassung”, “Kon‐struktionszwang”, “Zwangssituation”, “embryonale Erfordernisse” usw. Dürfen, selbst wenn sie “unausweichlich” erscheinen, nicht als bcwiesene Evolutionsfaktoren gelten, auch wenn sie zur Absicherung einer “quasi‐experimentellen überprüfung” oder “Gedarikenexperimenten” unter‐zogen worden sind.4. Infolge der nach wie vor unbekannten Struktur der ursprünglichen Metazoen verbietet sich eine phylogenetische Ausdeutung der in rezenten Ontogenesen ablaufenden Zellteilung.5 Der versuchten Herleitung der heutigen Trochophora aus einer sekundär unmetamerisierten und tertiar wieder sich segmenrierenden Larve wird nicht gefolgt; verschiedene Argumente zugunsten der Trochophora‐Theorie werden vorgebracht.6. Die Entstehung des Dotterreichtums läßt sich nicht allein durch allgemein verbindhche Selekoons‐zwänge erklären, sondern muß bei jeder Tiergruppe individual ansdysiert werden.7. ZusammenfassungDer Vergleich der für die regressiven Merkmale Auge und Melanophorensystem bzw. den konstruk‐tiven Geschmacksapparat verantwortlichen Polygensysteme beiAstyanax mexicanus(Pisces) ergibt weitgehende Obereinstimmung in der Manifestationsirt. Auffälligste Gemeinsamkeit ist die unter‐schiedliche Expressivität der einzelnen Polygene. Der Umfang jedes neu hinzutretenden Polygens ist nicht von der Art, sondern der bereits vorhandenen Zahl von Polygenen abhängig.Dem Phänomen des Wechsels in der Expressivität wird allgemeine evolutive Bedeutung beigemes‐sen. Erst in Phasen hoher Expressivität können die Anlagen kryptogener Strukturen phänotypisch manifest werden. Polygene geringer Expressivität sind dagegen geeignet, Strukturen zu stabilisieren. Der morphologische Farbwechsel oberirdischer Populationen desA. mexicanusstellt eine adaptive Spezialisierung dar, indem er durch einen Expressivitätszuwachs zustande kommt, der modifikativ unterdriickbar ist. Diese Art eines Kippmechanismus dürfte weitere Verbreitung haben.Oligogene Systeme dürften häufig nur Extreme polygener Vererbung sein. In diesen Fallen treten Gene hoher Expressivitat auf und erscheinen daher dominant. Aufgrund zu geringer Merkmalsdivergenz kann aber das übrige Polygensystem im Auflöserversuch nicht erfaßt werden. Als Beispiel fur den fließenden übergang von poly‐ zu scheinbar oligogenen Systemen wird der Geschlechtsbestimmungs‐modus bei einigen Zahnkarpfen angeführt.SummaryPrinciples of the manifestation of polygenic systemsComparison of the polygenic systems responsible for the regressive eye and melanophore system and the constructive taste bud apparatus inAstyanax mexicanus(Pisces) shows no difference in the principle of manifestation. The most striking similarity is the varying expression of the single polygenes. The amount of expression, a newly added polygene manifests, is dependent on the number of polygenes already present.General importance in evolutionary progress is attributed to this phenomenon of varying expression. Only in phases of high expression is directional selection enabled to enlarge and manifest anlagen of cryptogenic structures. Contrary to this, polygenes of low expression are apt to stabilize structures.The morphological colour change seems to be adaptive specialisation in connection with high polygenic expression. In this case this specialisation is developed by the fact that environmental influence can suppress high polygenic expression. This type of switch‐mechanism is probably wide‐spread.Oligogenic systems are often nothing else but extremes of polygenic inheritance. Monogenic dominance in these cases is based on polygenic high expression. On account of little structural difference, the rest of the polygenic systems mostly remain hidden. Ce n'est pas le type de polygènes déjà présents mais leur nombre qui détermine l'effect que chaque polygéne apporte en s'ajoutant.En général, une signification éolutive a été attribuée à ce phéomène de changement dans l'expression. Ce n'est qu à partir d'un haut niveau d'expression que. Grâce à la sélection. les ébauches de structures cryptogéniques se manifestent dans le phénotype. SummaryFive of the six banding patterns, postulated by Keyl(1962) for the chromosome arms A, E and F of the hypothetical species “which crossed the border between thummi‐ andthummi‐ and pseudothummi‐complexes”, could be found in several living species of both complexes. Moreover, threeChironomusspecies, collected in widely separated places, show the complete banding pattern of the hypothetical stem species in arms A, E and F. In contrast, chromosome arms B, C, D and G and other characters of dieir karyotypes differ markedly among these three species. Apparently, diese arms were less stable during evolution than arms A, E and F. Corresponding to the established faunistic connections in the holarctic region, the SwedishCh.cfr.tenuistylusBrundin and die CalifornianCh.spec. Apple Valley have remarkable similarities, whereas the AfricanCh. alluaudiKieffer is more divergent. Summary1. Adult moths representing all non‐ditrysian superfamilies were searched for ventral diaphragm structures. In the Neopseustidae no trace of a ventral diaphragm was found. In the Eriocraniidae there are segmental pairs of slender muscle bands uniting the nerve cords and the sterna. In all other forms examined a more or less extensive muscular diaphragm is present in the abdomen.2. An abdominal ventral diaphragm comprising segmental muscular alae is attributed to the ground plan of the superorder Amphiesmenoptera (Trichoptera + Lepidoptera). It is a synapomorphy of the two orders that the diaphragm muscles do not extend across the nerve cord but insert on its dorsal surface. The Zeugloptera have not (contrary to RICHARDS 1963) retained the primitive mecopteroid pattern with uninterrupted fibres crossing the nerve cord.3. In the Opostegidae the diaphragm fibres are all very close‐set and most of them extend across die nerve cord (although they are still attached to its dorsal sheath). These features are considered autapomorphic of the family.4. There is evidence that diaphragm reduction has taken place independently in the Eriocraniidae and the Neopseustidae.5. A distinct dorsal enlargement of the abdominal nerve cord sheath is present on die connectives in most Lepidoptera and is attributed to die ground plan of die order. In die Zeugloptera die dorsal tissue is formed by die sheath cells themselves. In die Aglossata die dorsal tissue is at least largely cellular. It is a possible autapomorphy of die neolepidopterous ground plan diat the sheadi enlargement is a true connective tissue formation widi copious extracellular material fabricated by the sheadi cells. When weakly developed or absent in Lepidoptera (e. g., in die Eriocraniidae, Neopseustidae, Opostegidae and Nepticulidae) die dorsal dssue mass is considered secondarily reduced.6. Whenever ventral diaphragm muscles are developed diey occur as far back as on the hindmost inter‐ganglionic connective or die terminal ganglionic mass. Posterior extension beyond diis mass was observed only in die Opostegidae, which have an unusually concentrated nerve cord.7. In Zeugloptera and Aglossata die diaphragm portions in segment II originate from die anterior sternal rim and are pronouncedly aliform. In die Neolepidoptera their fibres arise in regular succession diroughout a considerable part of die segment.8. In III and the following segments the lateral attachments of the diaphragm fibres are grouped more or less closely together in the anterior sternal regions, whereby die segmental‐ala pattern is formed. Attachment groups and hence alae are in some cases (Micropterix, Tiscberia) subdivided, but not in more than two units and not in all segments (sometimes only in one side of a segment).9. A ventral diaphragm pattern widi numerous alae per segment cannot be attributed to die ground plan of die Ditrysia.10. A true sternum I is retained only in die homoneurous families (it may be very reduced in die Hepialidae). Discrete sclerites are present in some Heteroneura (Tischeriidae, Nepticulidae, In‐curvaroidea) in front of the large sternum II plate, but are in all cases interpreted as derivatives of the anterior sternum II rim.11. Contractions of the ventral diaphragm muscle cause undulating movements of the nerve cord, enhancing hemolymph renewal in its immediate vicinity.ZusammenfassungDas ventrale Diaphragma derprimitiven (nicht‐ditrysischen) Lepidopteren. Eine motphologiscb‐phylogenetische StudieVkntrale Diaphragmenstrukturen wurden bei imaginalen Vertretern aller nicht‐ditrysen Lepido‐pteren‐übertamilien erneut untersucht. Die Neopseustiden besitzen keine Spur von ventralem Diaphragma. Bei den Eriocraniiden kommen nur paarige, dünne segmentale Muskelfasem vor, die den Ganglienstrang und die Sterna verbinden. Bei alien anderen untersuchten Tieren kommt ein mehr oder weniger ausgedehntes muskulöses ventrales Diaphragma im Hinterleib vor.2. Ein abdominales ventrales Diaphragma, aus segmentalen Muskelflügeln zusammengesetzt, wird dem Grundplan der Oberordnung Amphiesmenoptera s(Trichoptera + Lepidoptera) zugeschrieben. Es kann als Synapomorphie der beiden Ordnungen gelten, daß die Diaphragmenmuskeln sich nicht über den Bauchstrang hinziehen, sondern an dessen Dorsalfläche inserieren. Die Zeugloptera haben nicht ‐ entgegen der Auffassung Richards(1963) ‐ einen primitiven mecopteroiden Zustand bei‐behalten, in welchem nicht unterbrochene Muskelfasem den Bauchstrang überqueren.3. Bei den Opostegiden sind alle Diaphragmenfasem sehr dicht aneinandergereiht, und die meisten überqueren den Bauchstrang. Diese Merkmale werden als Autapomorphien der Familie gewertet.4. Die Annahme, das Diaphragma sei bei den Eriocraniiden und den Neopseustiden unabhangig reduziert worden, liifit sich pnylogenetisch begründen.5. Eine deudiche Verdickung der dorsalen Bauchstranghülle tritt an den Konnektiven bei den meisten Lepidopteren auf und dart dem Grundplan der Ordnung zugeschrieben werden. Bei den Zeuglo‐pteren machen lediglich die Perineuriumzellen das dorsale Gewebe aus. Bei den Aglossaten ist das dorsale Gewebe wenigstens zum großten Teilzellulär. Esist einemogliche Autapomorphie des Grund‐plans der Neolepidoptera, daß die Dorsalverdickung eigendich ein Bindegewebsgebilde ist, dessen reichliches Extrazellularmaterial von den Perineuriumzellen sezerniert wird. Wenn die Gewebsver‐dickung schwach entwickelt ist oder ganz fehlt (z. B. bei Eriocraniiden, Neopseustiden, Opostegiden una Nepticuliden), handelt es sich vermudich um sekundare Reduktionserscheinungen.6. Wo ventrale Diaphragmenfasem vorkommen, treten sie nach hinten bis zum letzten Interganglio‐narkonnektiv oder letzten Ganglienknoten auf. Eine Ausdehnung des Diaphragmas hinter diesen Knoten wurde nur bei den Opostegiden beobachtet, wo die Ganglienkette ungewohnlich kon‐zentriert ist.7. Der Diaphragmenabschnitt im Segment II geht bei den Zeuglopteren und Aglossaten vom Vorder‐rand des Segmentes aus und ist entschieden fliigelarrig, Bei den Neolepidopteren entspringen die Fasern in regelmäßiger Reihenfolge einem beträchtlichen Teil des Segmentes.8.Die Lateralansätze der Diaphragmenfasern im III und den folgenden Segmenten sind mehr oder weniger dicht in den vorderen Sternalregionen zusammengehäuft, wodurch das Segmentai‐Flügel‐muster zustande kommt. Die Ansatzgruppen, und dadurch die Flugel, sind dann und wann (Micro‐pterix, Tischeria) unterteilt, aber nie in mehr ais zwei Einheiten und nicht in alien Segmenten (bis‐weilen nur einseitig).9. Ein ventrales Diaphragma mit mehreren Fliigeln pro Segment kann dem Grundplan der Ditrysia nicht zugeschrieben werden.10. Das Sternum I ist nur bei den homoneuren Familien beibehalten (bei den Hepialiden bisweilen stark rückgebildet). Selbstandige Sklerite vor der großen Sternum‐II‐Platte kommen bei einigen Hetero‐neuren vor (Tischeriidae, NepticuUdae, Incurvarioidea), werden aber immer als Abkömmlinge des vorderen Stemums‐II‐Rahmens gedeutet.11. ZusammenfassungAnhand proteinelektrophoretischer Daten über 18 Genloci wurden Kleinlacerten der griechischen Inseln Milos und Skiros mit Festiandspopulationen vonPodarcis taurica ionica, Podarcis muralis albanicaundPodarcis erhardiiverglichen. Die Genfrequenzen der polymorphen Loci werden ange‐geben und die genetischen Distanzen nach Neierrechnet. Die Größen der genetischen Distanzen werden diskutierc undPodarcis milensisals Art bestätigt. Die Populationen von Milos und Skiros erwiesen sich als nächstverwandt, beide sind in die nahe Verwandtschaft vonPodarcis tauricaund nicht vonPodarcis muraliszu stellen.SummaryElectrophoretic investigations on European species of the genus Lacerta and Podarcis. ZusammenfassurigBei Schädeln von Wölfen aus Gebieten nördlich des 40. Breitengrades, aus Afghanistan und der UnterartC. l. pallipeswerden die Beziehungen Hirnschadelkapazitat zu Basilärlange miteinander verglichen. Dabei ergeben sich keine oder nur ganz geringe Unterschiede in der Hirnschadelkapazitat. Die von Hemmer(1978) vertretene Behauptung innerartlicher Cephalisationsstufe'n trifft nicht zu.
