SummaryThe cichlid fishPseudotropheus zebrais endemic to Lake Malawi and exists as four distinct colour morphs. It is shown from field and laboratory observations thatPs. zebramust be considered as two sympatric species with complete sexual isolation. This isolation is most probably based on an ethological mechanism with males of one population discriminating against females of the other. The two mating groups are comprised of BB/OB animals and B/W animals respectively.Slight but significant ecological differences were found between the two populations. B males occupy much larger territories than do BB males, and B animals feed much more frequently on plankton. Furthermore, B animals exhibit a preference for steep rock surface from which to scrape algae, the primary food source of both populations. BB animals show no preference for steepness of rock slope.A marked deviation from unity was found in the sex ratio of both populations. Three possible reasons for this are discussed. 1. There is a greater predator pressure on the males; 2. there is limited space for establishing territories, with the B/W group exhibiting larger territories and lower population density; 3. sex determinism is of the WXY type. It is further hypothesized that the B/W gene pool evolved from the BB/OB gene pool by several stepwise mutational events with ethological mechanisms enforcing the separation into two distinct sympatric populations.ZusammenfassungDer im Malawi See endemische CichlidePseudotropheus zebraexistiert in vier verschiedenen Farbmorphen. Feld‐ wie Laborbeobachtungen zeigten, daB es sich beiPs. zebraum zwei sympatrische Arten handelt. Die sexuelle Isolation wird wahrscheinlich durch ethologische Kreuzungsbarrieren verursacht. Die beiden Paarungsgruppen bilden zwei Gen Pools mit BB/OB‐Tieren in dem einen und B/W‐Tieren im anderen.Zwischen den beiden Populationen wurden leichte, aber signifikante Ökologische Unterschiede gefunden: B‐MäUnnchen besetzen gröβbere Territorien als BB‐MäUnnchen. Auch fressen die B/W‐Tiere häUufiger Plankton als Mitglieder der BB/OB‐Gruppe. Weiter zeigen die B/W‐Fische eine Bevorzugung steiler Felsoberflächen, von denen die Algen abgefressen werden. Der Algenteppich der FelsoberfläUche stellt in beiden Populationen die Hauptnahrungsquelle dar. BB/OB‐Tiere zeigen hingegen keine Bevorzugung besonderer Neigungswinkel der FelsoberfläUchen.In beiden Populationen findet man eine von einem 1:1‐VerhäUltnis abweichende Geschlechtsverteilung. Es werden drei mÖgliche Gründe diskutiert: 1. Die Männchen stehen unter einem grÖbβeren Feind‐druck. 2. Der zur Territorienbildung zur VerfüUgung stehende Platz ist ein die Anzahl der MäUnnchen limitierender Faktor. 3. Die Tiere haben einen W/X/Y‐Geschlechtsbestimmungsmechanismus. Ferner wird die MÖglichkeit diskutiert, daβ sich der B/W‐Gen Pool durch mehrere schrittweise Mutationen aus der als ursprüUnglich angenommenen BB‐Population enrwickelt hat. Zusammenfassung1Aus der Ordnung Lepidoptera wurdenOperophthera brumataL. undMacrothylacia rubiL. auf die histologische Struktur ihrer Stemmata untersucht, von den Trichoptera Larven der Familien Rhyacophilidae, Hydropsychidae, Philopotamidae, Limnophilidae und Sericostomatidae.2Das einzelne Stemma weicht in den oben genannten Ordnungen vom Ommatidium des imaginalen eukonen Komplexauges nur in drei wesentlichen Punkten ab:a. Der Kristallkegel wird von nur drei Zellen gebildet.b. An Stelle von zwei Hauptpigmentzellen treten drei Mantelzellen.c. Die Retinula ist zweistufig.Punkt a und b wurden zusammen als Synapomorphie der Trichoptera und Lepidoptera gewertet. Dieser Typ von Stemma sollte als Larvalommatidium bezeichnet werden.3Alle bisher untersuchten Lepidopterenstemmata gleichen sich im Bau. Es sind im Grundbauplan 6 Stemmata je Seite, sie stehen voneinander isoliert (auβer bei den Micropterygidae).4Trichopterenlarven haben im Grundbauplan 7 Paar Stemmata; sie stehen unmittelbar benachbart. Dies wurde als Beibehaltung der vom Komplexauge herkommenden Anordnung gedeutet.5Innerhalb der Trichoptera treten Unterschiede in Stemmatazahl und ‐Bau auf. SummaryNuclear DNA amounts have been determined in ten species of Japanese anura, including species for which the developmental rates are known. These new data together with data from the literature increase the number of anuran species for which both genome size and developmental rate characteristics are known to 26. Developmental rate at 20 C in these species is not directly correlated with genome size. Rather, genome size sets a limit beyond which development can not be accelerated. Selection for fast development, when reaching this limit will cause selection for a reduction in genome size. Slow development can be achieved independent of genome size and never seems to be result of direct selection.ZusammenfassungDer DNA‐Gehalt von Zellkernen unci Entwicklungsgeschwindigkeit bei Anuren Der DNA‐Gehalt diploider Zellkerne von zehn japanischen Anurenarten wurde bestimmt, besonders von Arten, deren Entwicklungsgeschwindigkeit genau untersucht worden ist. Zusammen mit Daten aus der Literatur liegen jetzt Angaben Über DNA‐Gehalt und Entwicklungsgeschwindigkeit von 26 Anurenarten vor. Bei 20°C setzt der DNA‐Gehalt des Genoms eine obere Grenze für die Entwick‐lungsgeschwindigkeit von Anuren. Selektion für schnelle Entwicklung darüber hinaus führt zu Selek‐tionsdruck auf die Genomgröβe. ZusammenfassungDie Sonderstellung der Stygocarididae als eigene Ordnung wird mit der spezifischen Struktur der Mandibel und dem besonderen Bau des Telsons begriindet. Ein Vergleich mit Larvenformen ursprünglicher Eucarida (Euphausiacea, Penaeidea) macht deutlich, daβ diese Besonderheiten mit groβer Wahrscheinlichkeit neotenischen Ursprungs sind.Andererseits stimmen die Stygocarididae mit den Anaspidacea in folgenden Merkmalen Überein: spezifische Struktur der Statocyste, besonderer Petasma‐Typ, Spermatheka auf 8.Thorakalsternit, 1. Thorakalsegment mit Kopf verschmolzen, Bau und Stellung der Thorakopoden I und VIII. Von diesen Merkmalen kÖnnen die drei ersten an fossilen Palaeocaridacea bisher nicht nachgepröft werden, wohl aber die drei letzten. Für diese läβt sich deshalb einwandfrei erweisen, daβ es sich bei ihnen nicht um allgemeine Syncaridamerkmale, sondern um eindeutige Synapomorphien der Anaspidacea handelt. Die Übereinstimmung der Stygocarididae mit den Anaspidacea in diesen Merkmalen und der vermutlich neotenische Ursprung ihrer Besonderheiten lassen keinerlei Zweifel an der wahren phylogenetischen Stellung dieser Familie: die Stygocarididae sind Anaspidacea. Ihre Wiedereingliederung in diese Ordnung macht eine Neufassung der Diagnose der Anaspidacea erforderlich, die abschlieβend gegeben wird.SummaryThe phylogenetic position of the Stygocarididae (Crustacea, Syncarida), with reference to morphological similarities with larval forms of eucarid CrustaceaClassification of the Stygocarididae as a distinct order of Syncarida is based on the particular structure of the mandible and the telson. Comparison with larval forms of primitive Eucarida (Euphausiacea, Penaeidea) indicates that these characters are very likely of neotenic origin.On the other hand, Stygocarididae agree with Anaspidacea in the following characters: specific structure of the otocysts, specific type of petasma, presence of spermatheka on 8th thoracic sternite, first thoracic somite incorporated into head, structure and position relative to the other thoracopods of thoracopod I and VIII. Of these characters the first three cannot as yet be verified in fossil remains of the Palaeocaridacea, yet this is possible for the last three of them. Thus it can be excluded that these features are characteristic also for groups other than the Anaspidacea. They are clear synapomorphies of the Anaspidacea. The agreement of the Stygocarididae with the Anaspidacea in these characters together with the probable neotenic origin of the peculiar features of this family leave no doubt as to its true phylogenetic position: the Stygocarididae are a family of the order Anaspidacea.
