SummaryThe relative importance of analyses of cladistic relationships is related to studies of the evolutionary history (phylogeny) of organisms, biological classification, and historical biogeography. Cracraft'sthree basic statements about phylogenetic reconstruction are restated and discussed. Some working methods of phylogenetic character analysis are exemplified and discussed: LeQuesne'suniquely derived character concept and Camin‐Solal'scharacter compatibility analysis. The postulate that a phenogram is an adequate estimate of a cladogram is tested by comparing the results of phenetic and cladistic analyses based upon the same character state matrix. The phenetic analysis is performed by graph clustering and the results presented as a modified phenogram. The test result is not conclusive, but demonstrates the value of phenetic analysis at the initial stage of cladistic analysis. Schlee'scriticism of the uses of the principles of parsimony and compatibility in cladistics is refuted. The use of more characters in cladistic analysis and an indication on the cladogram of supposed cases of parallelism and convergence is recommended. Conflicting views on the way phylogeny should be reflected in classification are reviewed and the method of phyletic sequencing is exemplified. The importance of cladistic analysis in the study of historical biogeography is stressed with an example of vicariance biogeography due to continental drift.ZusammenfassungDie Bedeutung von Analysen kladistischer Verwandtschaftsvorstellungen im Vergleich zu jenen aus Studien über evolutionäre Phylogenese der Organismen, biologische Klassifikation und historische Biogeographie wird erortert. Die drei grundlegenden Aussagen über phylogenetische Rekon‐struktionen von Cracraftwerden diskutiert. Ebenso LeQuesnesBegriff es einmalig entwickelten Merkmals und Camin‐SokalsAnalyse der Vereinbarkeit von Merkmalen.Das Postulat, daß ein Phanogram eine adaquate Beurteilung ermöglicht, wird geprüft. Zur phäne‐tischen Analyse dient “graph clustering”; das Ergeb'nis ist als modifiziertes Phänogram dargestellt. Das Resultat des Vergleichs ist nicht eindeutig, aber es zeigt doch den Wert einer phänetischen Analyse im ersten Stadium einer kladistischen Betrachtung.Die Kritik von Schleeam Gebrauch der Begriffe “arsimony” und Vereinbarkeit (“compatibility”) wird widerlegt. Die Heranziehung von mehreren Merfmalen zur kladistischen Analyse und Hinweise im Kladogram auf vermutete Fälle von Parallelismus und Konvergenz werden empfohlen. Eine Ubersicht über die divergierenden Gesichtspunkte, wie die Phylogenie in der Klassifikation am besten zum Ausdruck zu bringen sei, wird gegeben sowie Beispiele von der sogenannten “phyletic sequencing”. Zusammenfassung1. Noch heute steht das Subspezies‐Konzept, wie es in der Definition von Mayr(1975) zum Ausdruck kommt, auf einer subjektiven, einer theoretischen Grundlage entbehrenden Basis.2. Dies ließe sich ändern, wenn man die Subspezies nicht nur als räumliches, sondern auch als zeitliches Phänomen versteht.3. Sie muß don esucht werden, wo eine innerartliche evolutive Divergenz, die zumindest potentiell zu neuen Arten führen kann, auftritt (Art in statu nascendi).4. Merkmale, die solche innerartlichen Divergenzen erkennen lassen, müssen bedeutsam für das Voran‐schreiten der Evolution, d. h. selektiv wirksam sein (Adaptivmerkmale). Das trifft auf physiologische und ökologische Merkmale eher zu als auf ihre morphologischen Begleitmerkmale.5. Theriologische und herpetologische Beispiele zeigen, daß das Kühnelt'schePrinzip der regionalen Stenözie ein derartiges ökologisches Kriterium darstellt. Es erweist sich als ein nicht auf Artniveau, sondern auf einer innerartlichen Ebene konstantes Phänomen.6. Daher wird vorgeschlagen, die bisher auf keine innerartliche Ebene fixierte Kategorie Subspezies auf die real existente Ebene des Küunelt'schenPrinzips zu projizieren und damit auf eine weniger will‐kürliche Basis zu stellen.7. Die mögliche Anwendung des vorgeschlagenen Konzepts wird an Beispielen erläutert. Dabei wird angeregt, nachweislich in divergenten Unterarten existierende Arten als “polyzentrisch” (sensudeLattin), und nicht als “polytypisch” zu bezeichnen.8. Das vorgeschlagene Konzept ist vorlaufig nur auf weiterverbreitete Festlandsformen, nicht aber auf Inselformen anwendbar. Bei Montanformen kann es helfen, zwischen echten Montan(insel)formen und Ökotypen zu unterscheiden.9. Hervorzuheben ist die Parallelität, mit der poikilotherme und homoiotherme Arten auf Klimabe‐dingungen reagieren und sie kompensieren. Ihre Randisolate haben oft Reliktcharakter und sind im Aussterben begriffen. Daher kann nicht jedes Isolat grundsätzlich als potentielle “beginnende Art” aufgefaßt werden.Ökologische und exerimentell‐taxonomische Forschungen haben den hier vorgetragenen theoretischen Ansatz zu prüfen.SummaryKühnelt's principle of regional stenoecy and its bearing on the subspecies problem: a theoretical approach1. The subspecies concept as defined by Mayr(1975) and generally accepted at the present time is arbitrary, subjective and lacking a precise theoretical basis.2. This concept may be improved if the subspecies is recognized as a phenomenon not only in space but also in time.3. The term subspecies must be restricted only to those situations in which intra‐specific evolutionary divergence can potentially give rise to new species.4. Characters expressing these intra‐specific divergences should be adaptive characters necessary for the evolutionary process. This is true for physiological and ecological characters rather than for morphological ones.5. Theriological and herpetological examples demonstrate that Kühnelt'sprinciple of regional stenoecy is such an ecological criterion. This principle srates that individuals of a species can occupy a greater variety of habitats in the center of the species range (euryoec) than towards the periphery (stenoec). The discussed examples suggest however that this principle is a constant phenomenon not at the species level, but at a lower level.6. Therefore it is proposed to bring the category subspecies in coincidence with the really existant level of Kühnelt'sprinciple, thus making the category less arbitrary.7. The application of this proposed concept is illustrated by several examples. Those species which are comprised of demonstrably divergent subspecific populations should be named “polycentric” rather than “polytypic”.8. The proposed concept is apparently applicable only to widely distributed mainland forms and not to insular forms. When discussing montane populations, insular and ecotypic forms can however be better distinguished.9. The interesting parallelism of adaptation and compensation to similar climatic conditions of both poikilotherm and homoiotherm species is pointed out. It is suggested that peripheral isolares are most often relictual and in process of extinction because of environmental change. Therefore it is nor generally possible to interpret every isolate as a “beginning species”.The raxonomic applicability of the theoretical approach presented here must be tested by ecological and experimental research.RésuméLe princip de la stinoecie regionale selon Kühnelt et son importance pour le problème de la sus‐espèce: une approcbe théorique1. La conception de la sous‐espice défini par Mayr(1975) et presque généralement acceptée actuelle‐ment, nous semble arbitraire, subjective et sans base théorique suffisament précise.2. Cette conception peut être améliorée si la sous‐espece est regardée non seulement comme un phénomène spatial, mais aussi temporel.3. Le terme sous‐espèce devrait‐être limité aux cas ou une divergence évolutive au niveau intraspécifique pourrait finir dans la formation d'espèces séparées.4. Les caractères manifestants cette divergence intraspécifique par nécessité seront des caractères adaptives importants pour le procès évolutive. Cela s'applique plutôr aux caractères physiologiques er écologiques qu'aux caractères morphologiques.5. L'auteur est de l'avis que le principe de la sténoecie régionale selon Kühneltest un tel critère écologique. Ce principe dit qu'une espèce peut peupler une plus grande varété de biotopes au centre de son aire de répartition («euryoecique») que vers la périphérie («sténoecique»). Les exemples discutées suggèrent que ce principe est un phénomène constant plutôt au niveau infra‐spécifique qu'au niveau d'espéce.6. L'auteur fait la proposition de mettre cetie categorie en concordance avec le niveau du principe de Kühneltqui a une existence réelle. Ceci rend la catégorie sous‐espèce moins subjective.7. L'application de la conception proposée est illustrée par quelques exemples. Les espèces composées de populations apparammenr divergentes au niveau de sous‐espèce devraient‐être appellées plutôt «polycentriques» que «cpolytypiques».8. La conception proposée s'applique aux formes largement distribuées sur les continents mais pas encore à des formes insulaires. Elle peut‐être utile en tranchant la question de distinguer d'entre écotypes et formes «insulaires» lirnitées aux massifs de montagnes.9. On démontre une parallèle intéréssante d'entre espèces poîkilothermes et homéothermes s'adaptants à des conditions climatiques similaires et de leur mode d'y réagir. L'auteur suggère que les isolats periphériques sont plus souvent rélictaires et en voie d'extinction par cause de changements climatiques. ZusammenfassungIn seiner großen “Monographic der Medusen” hat Haeckel(1880) bei der Aufstellung seiner neuen Familie Flosculidae mit den GattungenFlosculaundFlorescufestgestellt, daß wir die Bildung eines Gastrovascularsystems mit unverzweigten Radiärkanälen und einfachem Ringkanal bei jugendlichen Larven der Ulmariden (“und wahrscheinlich aller Rhizostomeen”) finden. Nach dem biogenetischen Grundgesetz dürften wir daher annehmen, daß die Flosculidae die Vorfahren der Ulmariden und Rhizostomeen darstellen. Inzwischen hat Thiel(1970) gezeigr, daß das Kanalsystem der Kolpophorae Stiasnysohne Bildung eines Ringkanales zentrifugal vom Magenrand, bei den Dactyliophorae jedoch von einem vorher in der Nähe des Schirmrandes gebildeten Ringkanal entsteht. Diese zentripetalen Auswuchse verzweigen sich im Laufe der ontogenetischen Entwicklung mehr und mehr und anastomo‐sieren sich untereinander und weiterhin auch mit den Radiärkanälen in verschiedener Weise. Die Entwicklung zeigt so in der Tat ‐ wie Haeckelvermutet hat ‐ von einerFlosculu‐ähnlichen Form ausgehend eine fortschreitende Kornplizierung des Gastrovascularsystems. Stiasny(1921) hat die verschiedenen Typen dieser Kornplizierung nach den Gattungen, bei denen sie vorkommen, benannt und unterscheidet denLychnorhiza‐Typmit ein oder mehreren unverzweigten oder nur wenig ver‐zweigten intrazirkularen Auswüchsen, denCrambione‐Typmit untereinander, aber nichr mit den Radiärkanälen anastomisierenden Auswüchsen, denAcromitus‐Typmit untereinander und nur mit den rhopalaren Radiärkanälen, denAcromitoides‐Typmit untereinander und nur mit den interrhopalaren Radiärkanälen anastomisierenden Auswüchsen und schließlich denCatostylus‐Typ, in dem die Gefäßnetze sowohl mit den rhopalaren als auch den interrhopalaren Radiärkanälen anastomisieren, weiter denLobonemoides‐Typ, der wie der Acromitus‐Typ Anastornosen mit den rhopalaren, und denLobonema‐Typ, der wie bei Catostylus mit den beiderseitigen Radiärkanälen anastomosiert, während er beiStomolophusnur allgemein von einem sehr breiten Anastomosennetz schreibt. Ebenso gibt er beiRhizistomaundRhopilemakeine nähere Beschreibung ihres Typs. Bei der ersteren bleibt das Gastro‐vascularsystem zeitlebens auf demCrambione‐Typ, bei der letzteren auf demAcromitus‐Typstehen. Dabei treten die einzelnen aufgeführten Stadien (das Floscula‐, Lychnorhiza‐, Crambione, Acromitus‐, Acromitoides‐ und Catostylus‐Stadium) in der ontogenetischen Entwicklung in der genannten Reihen‐folge nacheinander auf, je nachdem, um welche Gattung es sich jeweils handelt, bis das Endstadium dieser Form erreicht ist. Es finder hier also irn Laufe der Entwicklung in den Postephyren eine Wieder‐holung der genannten Reihe statt, wenn sie nicht größer sind als 25–27 mm, während die ausgewach‐senen Tiere bis zu 350 mm und mehr erreichen können. Tatsächlich finder hier also während dieser Entwicklung eine Wiederholung der einzelnen phylogenetischen Sradien sratt, wie es das biogenetische Grundgesetz fordert. Diese Entwicklung wird anhand von Photographien von mit Haematoxilin injizierten Präparaten Stiasnyszur Anschauung gebracht. ‐ Zum Schluß gibt der Verfasser ein neues Schema der phylogenetischen Beziehungen der Gattungen der Rhizostornida, das auf der Ausbildung der Stadien des Gastrovascularsystems beruht.SummaryIn his compenduous “Monograph of the Acraspeda” E. Haeckel(1880) has pointed out, that we find the formation of a gastrovascular system with unbranched radial canals and a ring canal in the larval stages of theUlmaridae(and probably also of all Rhizostomidae) and on account of the biological foundamental law we may therefore suppose that the familyFlosculidaewith the generaFloscukzandFlorescarepresents the ancestors of theUlmaridueandRhizostomidue. In the meantime, however, Thiel(1970) has shown, that in the UO.Kolpophoruethe gastrovascular network originates without a ring canal centrifugally from the rim of the stomach. In theDactyliophoraehowever, it is formed from a previously produced ringcanal on the margin of the umbrella by unbranched zentripetally outgrowths. These later on more and more ramify and in different modes anastomose with each other and the radial canals. Thiel(1970) established therefore the new ordersCepheidaandRhizostomida, of which only the latter have a ring canal. They show, in fact, a development as Haeckelhas supposed from aFloscula‐like form, first with a ringcanal without any zentripetal outgrowths, then with simple unbranched, not anastomosing zentripetal canals, theLychnorhizidae. These are followed by on its ends joined, not with one of the radial canals communicating zentripetal canals (Crarnbione‐Typ), later on by forms which are in communication with the rhopalar‐ resp. interrhopalar radial canals (theAcromitus‐resp. theAmomitoides‐Typ. Finally we find theCatostylus‐Typ, in which the intracirkular network is in communication with both the rhopalar‐ and the interrhopalar canals, which is also the case inStomolophus. These differently named states (the Floscula‐, Lychnorhiza‐, Crambione‐, Acromitus‐, Acromitoides‐and Catostylus stages) appear in the ontogenetical development after each other in the denominate succession till the adult stage of the genus is reached. The genusRhizostomareaches its completion already in theCrambzone‐, the genusRhopilemuin theAcromitus‐state. In the individual development these stages appear after each other in the early youth until ca. 25 mm diameter. On this way they reprresent a repetition of phylogenetical stages as the genetical foundamental law necessitates. This development in the young individuals is represented by injection of the gastrovascularsystem with Delafields Haematoxilin by Stiasnyin several photographs, which are republished in the present work. ‐ At last the author gives a new diagrammatical representatio

ZusammenfassungDer von Bathverwendete Gattungsschlüssel für die Unterteilung der Blenniini wurde auf seine Brauch‐barkeit kritisch diskutiert. Es erwiesen sich nur wenige der angegebenen Merkmale als relevant für die Taxor. omie dieser Gruppe auf der Gattungsebene: Die Verbindung der Kiemenspalten, die Verbindung der Dentalia und die übermäßige Vermehrung von Zähnen. Reduktionen (z. B. Seitenorgansystem) waren nur brauchbar in Kombination mit anderen Merkmalen. Es wird daher vorgeschlagen, nur noch die GattungenBlennius, Coryphoblennius, ParablenniusundLipophrys, sowieChalarodenna, Chasmodes, HypsoblenniusundHypleurochilus(mit vielen ursprunglichen Merkmalen) zu unter‐scheiden.Unter Verwendung der taxonomischen Kriterien für die vier anderen Blenniidae‐Tribus wird ein Cladogramm konstruiert, das die vermittelnde Stellung der Blenniini zu den Salariini einerseits und den Omobranchini, Phenablenniini und Nemophini andererseits hervorhebt. Dieser Stammbaum der Familie Blenniidae zeichnet sich durch vielfachen Wechsel von pro‐ und regressiven Evolutionsschritten aus.SummaryCritical remarks on “Revision of Blenniini (Pisces: Blenniidae)” by H. Bath (1977)Bath'skey of blenniin genera is discussed critically for its usefullness. Only few of the indicated criteria turned our to be relevant for taxonomical differentiation at the genus level: The connection of the branchiostegal membranes, the connection of the dentalia, and the excessive increase of teeth number. Reductions (e.g. of the sensory canal systems) proved to be usefull only in combination with other characters. Therefore, we propose to distinguish only the generaBlennius, Coryphoblennius, Parablennius(including Bath'sAidablennius, Bathyblennius, Lupinoblennius, Pictiblennius, andScartella), and Liophrys(including Bath'sParalipophrysandSalaria), as well asChalaroderma, Chasmodes, Hypsoblennius, andHypleurochilus, the latter ones showing many primitive characters.Using the taxonomic criteria of 4 other blenniid tribes, a cladogram is constructed which emphasizes the connective status of Blenniini to Salariini on the one hand, and to Ornobranchini, Phenablenniini, and Nemophini on the other hand. Consequently, the phylogeny of the Blenniidae shows manyfold changes of progressive and regressive evolutionary steps.RésuméRemarques critiques à propos de la «Révision des Blenniini (Pisces: Blenniidae)» par H. Bath (1977)La clef des genres, utilisée par Bath(1977) pour la subdivision des Blenniini est discutée d'une manière très critique en ce qui concerne son utilitt pratique. Finalement, très peu de caractères concernant la taxonomie de ce groupe au niveau des genres se sont révélés valables: p. ex. la soudure des fentes bran‐chiales, la soudure des Dentalia et la multiplication des dents. Les réductions comme p. ex. celles du système des organes latéraux ne sont utilisables qu'en combinaison avec d'aurres caractères. En raison de' ces fairs, il est proposé que seuls les genresBlennius, Parablennius, Coryphoblennius, Lipophrys, Chalaroderma, Chasmodes, HypsoblenniusetHypleurochilus, possédantde nombreux caractères archaiques, doivent être maintenus.En utilisant des critères taxonomiques des 4 tribi des Blenniidae, I'auteur propose un cladogramme pour faire apparaitre la position intermédiaire des Blenniini par rapport aux Salariini d'une part et des Omobranchini, des Phenablenniini et des Nemophini d'autre part. ZusammenfassungAuf der Basis von cytotaxonomischen und morphologischen Untersuchungen wird eine neue Muriden‐Art aus Sudathiopien beschrieben. Obwohl die meisten Merkmale eindeutig für eine Zugehörigkeit zurGrammomys dolichurus‐Gruppesprechen, bestehen auch Ähnlichkeiten in Richtung auf die Muriden‐gattungThallomys. Eine besondere Auffälligkeit des Karyotyps besteht in einer für die Familie Muriden ungewöhnlichen Verteilung des konstitutiven Heterochromatins, da nur ein Chromosomenpaar — das möglicherweise die Geschlechtschromosomen repräsentiert ‐ C‐Banden‐positive Regionen aufweist. Die Frage der Gattungszugehorigkeit wird im Rahmen einer Gesamtanalyse diskutiert, sie bedarf jedoch für eine endgultige Klärung weiterer differentieller Chromosomenanalysen sowohl aus der GattungThamnomys (Grammomys) als auch aus der GattungThallomys.SummaryA new Muride species from South EthiopiaBased on cytotaxonomical and morphological investigations a new Muride species from southern Ethiopia is described. Although the most features make the new species clearly a member of theGrammomys dolichurus‐group, similarities to the genusThallomyswere also observed. Particularly noteworthy is the unusual distribution of the constitutive heterochromatin. Only one chromosome pair, which is possibly representing the sex‐chromosomes, showed positively stained regions after the treatment for C‐banding.The question of which genus the female specimen belongs to is discussed however, for a definite solution further karyotype analyses based on modern banding techniques are required from the genusThamnomys (Grammomys) as well as from the genusThallomys.RésuméUne nouvelle espèce de muridés d'Éthiopie du SudUne nouvelle espèce de muridés d'Éthiopie du Sud est décrite sur la base de recherches cytotaxono‐miques et morphologiques. ZusammenfassungDas Kernproblem einer umfassenden Untersuchung über die Entstehung des gesamten Exkretions‐systems vonLacerta agilisL. (Schubert, im Druck) wurde herausgegriffen und hier dargestellt. Es ist dies die Morphogenese des Meso‐(bzw. Meta‐)nephrostubulus. Dieser setzt sich prinzipiell aus zwei Anteilen zusammen: dem onto‐, eventuell auch phylogenetisch älteren Prototubulus und dem onto‐, eventuell auch phylogenetisch jüngeren Neotubulus. Daher kann die weitere Differenzierung des Nierentubulus nicht allein durch Langenwachstum der ersten Tubulusanlage (Hauptkanälchen, Prototubulus) und Schlingenbildung erklärt werden. Das aus der zweiteiligen Tubulusanlage resul‐tierende Haftpunktproblern sowie die Entwicklung des Corpusculurn renis werden dargestellt und auf Grund der Erkenntnisse diskutiert.Für den Entstehungsmodus des Nephrons (im speziellen des Neotubulus) wurde ein Modell erstellt, da sich das Modell Kozliksals unvollständig envies.SummaryOn the problems ofnephric tubules morphogenesis in vertebratesThe main problem of a comprehensive and detailed investigation on the development of the entire excretory system ofLacerta agilisL. (Schubert, in press) is taken out from it and presented here. This is the morphogenesis of the mesonephric and metanephric tubule respectively. In principle the tubulus is composed by two parts: the onto‐ and perhaps also phylogenetically older Prorotubulus and the onto‐ and perhaps also phylogenetically younger Neotubulus. Conseuently the further differentiation of the nephric tubule cannot be explained only by a lengthening and following convolution of the first anlage of the tubule (Hauptkanälchen = Tubulus principalis, Prototubulus). The problem of the zone of attachment (Haftpunkt) resulting from the bipartite anlage of the tubulus as well as the development of the corpusculum renis are treated and discussed on grounds of the findings.Fore the mode of nephron‐morphogenesis (particularly that of the neotubulus) a model is given, because Kozliksmodel proved to be incomplete.RésuméLa problématique de la genèse des tubuli rénaux chez les vertébrésII est question ici d'un problème central traité dans une étude plus ample sur l'évolution de l'ensemble du systième d'excrétion propre à laLacerta agilisL. (Schubert,souspresse): il s'agit de la genètse du méso‐ (respectivement du méta‐) néphrotubulus. Celui‐ci se compose en principe de deux parties: du prototubulus et du neotubulus qui, sur le plan ontoginénéique et peut‐être même phylogénétique est postérieur au prototubulus. C'est la raison pour laquelle la différenciation intervenue dans le tubulus rénal ne peut s'expliquer uniquement par la croissance en longeur et par la formation de noluds.
