AbstractWe test the hypothesis that the congruence between mitochondrial DNA and nuclear divergence depends on the probability of interspecific hybridizations. This probability was measured by the complexity of mating and social behavior on a subjective rank scale. As predicted there is a better matrix correlation between mtDNA and nuclear distance measures in taxa with a well developed mating behavior. But this result is far from being clear, as each data set has its unique characteristics and comparisons across taxa are extremely difficult and dangerous.ZusammenfassungVerschiedene Autoren haben gezeigt, daß die Divergenz mitochondrialer DNA‐Sequenzen von Artenpaaren nicht mit der Divergenz der Kern‐DNA (Nei‐Distanzen) übereinstimmt. Aufgrund des Erbganges kann das mitochondriale Genom Artgrenzen durch Hybridisation leichter überwinden. Die Komplexität des Paarungsverhaltens sollte daher die unterschiedliche Korrelation von mtDNA‐ und Kern‐Divergenz erklären können. AbstractMorphological and allozymatic analyses show that there are four species –L. tuberum(mainly in the north) andL. nigriceps, L. “tubero‐interruptus”, andL. unifasciatus(sympatrically in the south) – in theLeptothorax tuberumgroup in West Europe north of the Alps, and that these species hybridize. The two commonly co‐occurring species,L. nigricepsandL. unifasciatus, rarely hybridize, suggesting that premating isolating mechanisms have evolved, whereas the rare species,L. “tubero‐interruptus”, easily interbreeds possibly with all the other species of this group. There are distinct morphological gaps between the species, but hybridization tends to fill these gaps or even produces morpnological copies (L. nigriceps×L. “tubero‐interruptus”) of a third species (L. tuberum).ZusammenfassungAnhand morphologischer und enzymelektrophoretischer Untersuchungen wurde festgestellt, daß in Nordwesteuropa vier verschiedene Arten derLeptothorax tuberum‐Gruppevorkommen:L. tuberumvorwiegend im Norden, aberL. nigriceps, L. unifasciatusundL. “tubero‐interruptus”meist sympatrisch im Süden. Wir konnten auch nachweisen, daß Hybridisierungen vorkommen und Bastardvölker auftreten.L. unifasciatusundL. nigriceps, die häufig zusammen vorkommen, bastardieren selten, währendL. “tubero‐interruptus”offensichtlich leicht mit den anderen Arten kreuzt. Die Bastard‐Arbeiterinnen nehmen in morphologischen Merkmalen eine Mittelstellung zwischen den Elternarten ein, doch ist der BastardL. nicriceps×L. “tubero‐interruptus”interessanterweise praktisch identisch mitL. tuberumbezüglich aller morphologischen Merkmale, die wir untersucht haben (Pigmentierung). AbstractA total of 257 966 specimens from 149 catches of drosophilid flies from Switzerland, belonging to the 34 most frequent species are considered here. The records are screened for effects of environmental factors (geographical region, altitude, season, habitat, soil, climate) on the size and diversity of the samples. AbstractFollowing Graf's(1986) mathematical model regarding the population genetics ofRana lessonae/ esculentapopulations, we carried out calculations on the structure and dynamics ofR. ridibundal esculenta‐♂ ♂‐populations, in whichR. ridibundaindividuals of both sexes live together withesculenta‐♂ ♂.Within the context of available biological data on the frog populations, the adjustment and maintenance of a polymorphic equilibrium between the genotypes that live in this system can be attributed to two theoretical possibilities:1. The establishment of a stable equilibrium is possible if the reproductive chance of either ♂‐forms deteriorates with its numerical increase (negative feedback).2. The fitness parameters are not constant, but depend on ecological and population‐specific genetic factors.R. ridibunda/esculenta‐♂ ♂‐populations may have originated and can remain stable in those areas, in that the fitness of both ♂ ♂‐forms is nearly equal. Oscillations of ecological factors, e. g. climate, may influence single fitness components and may lead to temporal advantages of one of the ♂‐forms. In this way the equilibrium state could be realised by a reciprocal advantage of one or the other form.ZusammenfassungAuf der Basis eines mathematischen Modells (Ansatz nach Graf1986) wurden Berechnungen zur Struktur und Dynamik vonridibunda/esculenta‐♂ ♂‐Populationen, in denen nebenridibunda‐Individuen beiderlei Geschlechts ausschließlichesculenta‐♂ ♂ leben, durchgeführt. Die Einstellung und Aufrechterhaltung eines polymorphen Gleichgewichtes zwischen den in diesem System auftretenden Genotypen kann im Kontext mit vorliegenden populationsbiologischen Daten auf zwei theoretische Möglichkeiten zurückgeführt werden:1. Die Einstellung eines stabilen Gleichgewichtes ist möglich, wenn sich mit zunehmendem Anteil einer ♂‐Form in der Population deren Chancen zur weiteren Reproduktion verschlechtern.2. Die Fitness‐Parameter sind keine Konstanten, sondern hängen von ökologischen sowie populationsspezifischen genetischen Faktoren ab.Ridibunda/esculenta‐♂ ♂‐Populationen können nur dort entstehen und existieren, wo die Fitness der beiden ♂ ♂‐Formen etwa gleich ist. Schwankungen ökologischer Faktoren, z. B. des Klimas, könnten einzelne Fitness‐Komponenten beeinflussen und somit zu zeitweiligen Vorteilen für eine ♂‐Form führen. AbstractThe concept of progressive evolution is dicussed. The notion of progress in evolution, conceptualized as taxic diversity correlated with structural complexity, is related to the concept of the palingenetic axis of the cladogram. A summary of the classification of higher snake taxa is used as empirical basis supporting these theoretical considerations. The key to evolutionary success of (higher) metazoans appears to lie in increased differentiation, coupled with a developmental and structural/functional dissociability of traits.ZusammenfassungDas Konzept fortschrittlicher Evolution wird diskutiert und als Zunahme taxonomischer Diversität in Abhängigkeit von zunehmender struktureller Komplexität verstanden. In diesem Sinne läßt sich die Idee vom Fortschritt mit dem in früheren Arbeiten eingeführten Konzept der palingenetischen Achse des Kladogramms vereinen. Die Klassifikation höherer Kategorien der Schlangen wird als empirisches Beispiel zur Untermauerung vorausgehender theoretischer Erörterungen herbeigezogen. AbstractTurnicidae are a small palaeotropical avian family which shows some interesting features uncommon for birds. They are extremely small birds, with a short incubation, have nidifugous young which have to be fed for 10 days and grow very rapidly. Turnicidae display a reversed sexual dimorphism and generally are supposed to mate in a polyandric mating system. – Systematic, biogeographic and life history data from the literature and museum collections ofTurnix suscitator arereviewed. A complete list ofTurnix suscitatorsubspecies is given. New, statistically reliable data on reversed sexual size dimorphism are presented. The breeding ofTurnix suscitator suscitatorin captivity is described and extensive, statistically reliable data on egg size, clutch size, incubation time and postnatal growth rate are presented. Based on this information, the growth data are fitted to a Gompertzgrowth curve and the dynamics of postnatal growth are analysed. From allometric considerations of the relation between egg size and body size as well as postnatal growth rate and body size it is proposed, that Turnix has been selected for a rapid development, so that its minuteness is only a by‐product of developmental constraints.ZusammenfassungTurniciden (Laufhühnchen) sind eine kleine paläotropische Vogelfamilie, deren Biologie einige interessante und ungewöhnliche Elemente zeigt. Es sind sehr kleine Vögel, mit einer extrem kurzen Inkubationsdauer; sie haben nestflüchtende Küken, die aber nach dem Schlupf 10 Tage lang gefüttert werden müssen und sehr schnell heranwachsen. Laufhühnchen besitzen einen ausgeprägten umgekehrten Sexualdimorphismus und wahrscheinlich ein polyandrisches Paarungssystem.In dieser Arbeit sind alle verfügbaren Daten zur Systematik, Biogeographie und Biologie des Bindenlaufhühnchens (Turnix suscitator) zusammengestellt. Neue, statistisch zuverlässige Daten über den umgekehrten Sexualdimorphismus werden vorgestellt. Brut und Jungenaufzucht werden an Gefangenschaftszuchten beschrieben, und statistisch aussagefähige Daten über Eigewicht, Gelegegröße, Inkubationsdauer und postnatales Wachstum werden vorgestellt. Anhand dieser Daten wird die postnatale Wachstumsdynamik der Küken analysiert und die Wachstumskurve als Gompertz‐Kurve beschrieben. Physiologische und morphologische Limitationen der Wachstumsgeschwindigkeit werden diskutiert, und anhand allometrischer Berechnungen wird die Hypothese vorgestellt, daß die hohe postnatale Wachstumsgeschwindigkeit vonTurnix suscitatoradaptiv ist.
