AbstractThe clado‐evolutionary classification – attempt of a synthesisThe advantages and disadvantages of the evolutionary, the cladistic and the sequential mode of classification are analyzed. This comparison clearly demonstrates the desirability of combining genealogical and anagenetic components in one (hierarchic) classification.The clado‐evolutionary classification fulfils both conditions by using a two‐step‐modus. In the first step all possible variations of transformation of the basic phylogram into the classification are elaborated by use of specifically marked types of taxa. In addition to holophyletic (= monophyletic sensu Hennig), “orthophyletic” (= paraphyletic taxa with only one emerging lineage) taxa are also allowed. On the other hand, so‐called multidimensional paraphyletic taxa (= with more than one emerging lineage) are not allowed. Subtaxa are sequentially arranged, unclear genealogical conditions are expressed by adding of “sedis mutabilis”. In the second step the most suitable variation is selected by taking the anagenetic component into consideration. Practicability and compatibility with traditional systems serve as supplementary criteria of selection. The same formalism can express unequivocally “chronospecies” and so‐called extant stemspecies (by multiple writing) at the species level.This modus of classification is demonstrated and annotated by four concrete examples (primitive Insecta, Plathelminthes, Hominidae, Insecta‐Mecoptera‐Panotpa).The terms “monophyly” and “grade of relationship” are discussed. The traditional view is more clearly specified and supported through experience of practical work. With respect to the use of paraphyletic taxa, the clado‐evolutionary method fills a synthesizing position (see above).In contrast to the clear modus of retransformation of a clado‐evolutionary system into a phylogram, several possibilities of transforming a phylogram into a clado‐evolutionary system exist. This is in agreement with the different purposes of phylogram and classification, enables the consideration of anagenetic, practical, and traditional components, and also expresses the status of a phylogram as a theorem of probalility.Thus, the clado‐evolutionary classification combines the advantages of the phylogenetic (clear retransformation into the phylogram) and of the evolutionary method (use of linnean categories to express order and divergence of groups). Additional advantages of this new synthesizing methodology are the large compatibility with traditional systems, the simple integration of new results, and the equivalent formalism for fossil groups as well as to express the special conditions at the species‐level.ZusammenfassungZunächst werden Vor‐ und Nachteile der evolutionären, der kladistischen und der sequenziellen Klassifikationsmethode analysiert. Als Ergebnis dieser Analyse stellt sich als grundlegendes Problem die Anforderung an eine (zwangsläufig hierarchische) Klassifikation, sowohl genealogische als auch anagenetische Vorgänge der Phylogenese auszudrücken.Die klado‐evolutionäre Klassifikation erfüllt diese doppelte Anforderung durch einen Zwei‐Schritte‐Modus. Zunächst werden unter Verwendung speziell gekennzeichneter Taxatypen alle formalen Varianten der Umsetzung des zugrunde liegenden Phylogramms in eine Klassifikation erarbeitet. Dabei sind neben holophyletischen (= monophyletischen sensu Hennig) auch “orthophyletische” (= paraphyletische Taxa, aus denen nur eine Linie hervorgeht) Taxa zugelassen. Sogenannte mehrdimensional paraphyletische Taxa (aus denen mehr als eine Linie hervorgegangen ist) dürfen hingegen nicht verwendet werden. Subtaxa werden sequenziell angeordet, unklare genealogische Verhältnisse werden durch den Zusatz sedis “mutabilis” ausgedrückt. Im zweiten Schritt erfolgt durch Einbezug der anagenetischen Komponente die Auswahl der geeignetsten Variante. Dabei dienen Praktikabilität sowie möglichst hohe Kompatibilität zu bereits bestehenden Systemen als Hilfskriterien. Der gleiche Formalismus kann im Art‐Bereich dazu benutzt werden, urn “Chronospecies” und sogenannte Fortlebende Stammarten (durch Mehrfachschreibweise) eindeutig anzuschreiben.Dieser Klassifikationsmodus wird an vier Fallbeispielen (Basale Insecta, Plathelminthes, Hominidae, Insecta‐Mecoptera‐Panorpa) demonstriert and erläutert.Die Begriffe “Monophylie” und “Verwandtschaftsgrad” werden diskutiert, wobei die traditionelle Auffassung präzisiert and vor allem durch die der Praxis entnommenen Gesichtspunkte begründet wird. Bezüglich der Verwendungsmöglichkeit paraphyletischer Taxa nimmt die klado‐evolutionäre Methode eine Mittelstellung zwischen Kladistik and evolutionirer Systematik ein (s. o.).Im Gegensatz zur eindeutigen Interpretationsmöglichkeit eines klado‐evolutionären Systems als stammesgeschichtlicher Prozeβ (ausgedrückt durch ein Phylogramm), gibt es stets mehrere (formal gleichwertige) Möglichkeiten, ein Phylogramm in ein klado‐evolutionires System umzusetzen. AbstractComparative ultrastructural investigations on Scyphozoan sperm and their significance for phylogeneticsThe ultrastructure of Scyphozoan sperm including species of the orders Stauromedusida, Semaeostomeae and Rhizostomeae was observed comparatively. The spermatozoon ofCraterolophus tethys(Stauromedusida) has a short, conically‐shaped nucleus, its base forms a protrusion that ranges up to the distal centriole. In the middle piece there are five mitochondria and only one single (distal) centriole without pericentriolar complex. The nuclear protrusion as well as the reduction of the pericentriolar complex and the proximal centriole most probably represent apomorphic characters of the Stauromedusida. The male gametes of the Discomedusae (Semaeostomeae and Rhizostomeae) exhibit an elongated conically‐shaped nucleus, electron dense vesicles in the head and in the middle piece, a proximal and a distal centriole (the latter with pericentriolar complex) and always four mitochondria. Some spermatozoans of the Semaeostomeae have a flat nuclear basal groove, the middle piece peripherally forms a collar enveloping the most proximal part of the flagellum.Including the findings of Afzeliusand Franzén(1971) on the spermatozoon ofNausithoë(Coronata) it can be stated that the Coronata display mutual characters especially with Discomedusae (organelles of the middle piece almost identical) but with Stauromedusida too (relatively short, conically‐shaped nucleus; lack of a collar). Thus, the male gametes of the Scyphozoa do not support the concept of Werner(1973), that the Coronata represent the most primitive Scyphozoa. Our preliminary studies more likely suggest, that the Coronata take a systematic position between Stauromedusida and Discomedusae as proposed by Thiel(1966).ZusammenfassungDie Ultrastruktur der Scyphozoenspermien wurde an Vertretern aus den Ordnungen Stauromedusida, Semaeostomae und Rhizostomeae vergleichend untersucht. Das Spermium vonCraterolophus tethys(Stauromedusida) hat einen kunen, konischen Kern, dessen Basis einen Ausläufer bildet, der bis zum distalen Centriol reicht. Im Mittelstück liegen fünf Mitochondrien und nur ein einziges (distales) Centriol ohne Pericentriolarapparat. Der Ausläufer des Kerns sowie die Reduktion des Pericentriolarapparates und des proximalen Centriols stellen wahrscheinlich apomorphe Merkmale der Stauromedusida dar. Die Samenzellen der Discomedusae (Semaeostomeae und Rhizostomeae) haben einen langgestreckten Kern, elektronendichte Vesikel im Kopf und Mittelstück, ein proximales und ein distales Centriol (letzteres mit Pericentriolarapparat) und konstant vier Mitochondrien. Bei einigen Spermien der Semaeostomeae weist das hintere Ende des Kernes eine flache Basalgrube auf, das Mittelstück bildet peripher eine den proximalen Teil des Flagellums umh*uuml;llende Men schette.Unter Einbeziehung der Befunde von Afzeliusund Franzén(1971) an den Spermien vonNausithoë(Coronata) kann festgestellt werden, daβ die Coronata insbesondere mit Discomedusae (Organellen des Minelstücks annäernd identisch) aber auch mit Stauromedusida (relativ kuner, konischer Kern; keine Manschette) Gemeinsamkeiten aufweisen. Somit wird das Konzept von Werner(1973), wonach die Coronata die ursprünglichsten Scyphozoa darstellen, durch die Ultrastrukrur ihrer Spermien nicht gestützt. Unsere vorläufigen Befunde deuten eher darauf hin, daβ die Coronata im System der Scypiozoa zwischen Stauromedusida und Discomedusae stehen, wie von Thiel(1966) vorgeschlagen.RésuméEtudes ultrastructurales comparatives aux spermatozoides des Scyphozoaires et à leur signification pour la phylogénieL'ultrastructure des spermatozoides des Scyphozoaires a été observée comparativement en regardant des espèces des ordres Stauromedusida, Semaestomeae et Rhizostomeae. Le spermatozoide deCraterolophus tethys(Stauromedusida) contient un noyau court et conique, à sa base une protubérance est formée, qui s'étend jusqu'au centriole distal. Dans la pièce du milieu it y a cinq mitochondries et un seul (distal) centriole sans appareil pericentriolaire. La protubérance du noyau comme la réduction de l'appareil péricentriolaire et du centriole proximal représentent probablement des caracteres apomorphiques des Stauromedusida. Les spermatozoides des Discomedusae (Semaeostomeae et Rhizostomeae) possèdent un noyau rallongé, des vésicules denses en tête et en pièce du milieu, un centriole proximal et distal (le dernier avec appareil pericentriolaire) et toujours quatre mitochondries. Chez quelques spermatozoides des Semaeostomeae, le bout postérieur du noyau montre une fosse basale plate. A sa péripherie la pièce du milieu forme une manchette qui enveloppe la partie proximale du flagelle.Les résultats de Afzeliuset Franzén(1971) aux spermatozoides deNausithoë(Coronata) compris, on peut constater, que les Coronata montrent des caractéres communs en particulier avec les Discomedusae (organelles de la pièce du milieu presque identique) mais aussi avec les Stauromedusida (noyau relativement court et conique; manque d'une manchette). Ainsi, le concept de Werner(1973) que les Coronata représentent les Scyphozoaires les plus primitifs, n'est pas soutenu par l'ultrastructure de leur spermatozoides. AbstractBased on recent knowledge, a subdivision of the Spadellidae into the generaSpadellas. str.,Gephyrospadellagen. nov. (one pair of lateral fins, with ventral digitate adhesive organs), andParaspadellagen. nov. (two pairs of fins, with adhesive organs) is proposed. A misidentified Japanese spadellid is herewith classified asGephyrospadella caecaferasp. nov. and a new family Toklokaispadellidae is introduced. AbstractThe Jalapa population of the swordtail Xiphophorus helleri Heckel (Pisces, Poeciliidae) as a model for the evolution of the heterochromosomeTheXiphophorus helleripopulation from Jalapa (Mexico) contains two differently coloured males: Black males show concentrations of melanophores in a lower longitudinal stripe of the body whereas red males have a concentration of pterinophores there. Different phenotypes of females can be distinguished only by cellular investigations or after treatment with testosterone. The red colouration is caused by a dominant geneR, whereasrr‐genotypes are black. Ther‐bearing chromosome works as female determinator and therefore, corresponds to the X‐chromosome of otherXiphophorusspecies.Ris coupled with a weak male determining gene which is only effective with other male determining genes on the autosomes. Basing on these results the possible ways of the evolution of the heterochromosomes are discussed.ZusammenfassungDie Jalapa‐Population des mexikanischen SchwertträgersXiphophorus helleriweist einen Färbungs‐dimorphismus auf, der sich phänotypisch deutlich nur bei den ♂♂ manifestiert: Schwarze ♂♂ weisen besondere Melanophorenkonzentrationen in einem unteren Längsband des Körpers auf, während rote ♂♂ don eine Ansammlung von Pterinophoren zeigen. AbstractThe morphology of neurocrania of several representatives of European Blenniidae was investigated. Regarding the structure of parietals and supraoccipital, and the course of the supratemporal canal of the lateral‐line system, four different patterns were found. This leads to the differentiation of the generaLipophrys, Coryphoblennius, Parablennius, ScartellaandAidablennius. Blenniusis separated from these genera as it possesses narrow relationships to the tribes Nemophini, Omobranchini and Phenablenniini. The remaining genera of the former tribe Blenniini (Aidablennius, Chasmodes, Coryphoblennius, Hypleurochilus, Hypsoblennius, Lipophrys, ParablenniusandScartella) are joined in the new tribe Parablenniini which possesses strong relationships to the tribe Salariini.ZusammenfassungSkelettmerkmale als Kriterium für die Taxonomie der Blenniidae – Revision der Gattungen europäischer Blenniidae (Percomorphi; Pisces)Die Hirnschädel von Vertretern einiger europäscher Blenniidae wurden morphologisch untersucht. AbstractChemosystematic investigations on the position of Lacerta jayakari and the genera Gallotia and Psammodromus (Sauria; Lacertidae)13 species of the generaLacerta, PsammodromusandGallotia (L. erhardii, L. filfolensis, L. bedriagae, L. cappadocica, L. jayakari, L. vivipara, L. trilineata, L. agilis, P. hispanicus, P. algirus, G. atlantica, G. galloti, G. stehlin:)have been examined by means of micro complement fixation tests (albumin) as well as by proteinelectrophoresis concerning 14 genetic loci. The results and their con‐sequences are the follows:1.L. cappadocica, L. bedriagae, andL. erhardii/L. filfolensisare representatives of phylogeneticly equivalent groups (subgenera). Their isolation in the Middle Miocene corresponds with the first contacts of the landmasses of Eurasia and Africa.2.Lacerta jayakarimay be considered as a representative of a further group equivalent in this aspect; though the immunological results would not exclude a position near the green lizards (subgenusLacerta s. str.).3. Because of this isolated position ofL. jayakarifor this species (andLacerta cyanura) the subgenusOmanosaurasubgen. nov. has been established.4.Psammodromus hispanicusandP. algirushave probably been isolated of each other since the Middle Miocene, too.5. AbstractCephalisation, Telencephalisation and Neocorticalisation within MustelidaeStudied were the interspecific relationships between brain weight and body weight, volume of telencephalon and body weight, volume of neocortex and body weight. The allometric lines ofMustela nivalis, Mustela putoriusandMustela visonhave been used as reference lines (100) to determine cephalisation, telencephalisation and neocorticalisation of the studied species. Within the family Mustelidae values for cephalisation reach from 65 (Mephitis mephitis) to 260 (Pteronura brasiliensis). Higher cephalisation is correlated with even higher telencephalisation and neocorticalisation: Values forMustela nivalis99, 98, 102, forPteronura brasiliensis260, 271, 308. The differences in cephalisation, telencephalisation and neocorticalisation correspond partially with the biology of the species. Ground living species have a lower cephalisation, their olfactory system is quite good developed. In tree living and climbing species cephalisation and neocorticalisation is higher; the optical system is of more importance. Otters show a reduction of the olfactory system, high cephalisation and neocorticalisation.Within the ground living speciesConepatus chingaandTaxidae taxushave a very high cephalisadon, within the climbing speciesEira Barbaraand within the LutrinaePteronura brasiliensis. Biological interpretations for these species with high cephalisation – in comparison with their related species – are difficult.ZusammenfassungInnerhalb der Mustelidae und auch innerhalb der iugehöriggen Unterfamilien sind sehr unterschiedliche Cephalisationsstufen vorhanden. Zwischen Hirngröβe, Telencephalongröβe und Neocortexgröβe bestehen enge Korrelationen. Mit höherer Cephalisation ist höhere Telencephalisation und Neocorticalisation verbunden. Unterschiede der Cephalisation, Telencephalisation, Neocorticalisation und in der Gröβe von Allocortex + Corpus striatum können zum Tell mit biologischen Besonderheiten erklärt werden. Bodenbewohnende Formen haben eine niedere Cephalisation, das olfaktorische System ist recht gut ausgebildet. Baumbewohnende Arten sind höher cephalisiert, die Neocorticalisation ist gröβer; bei diesen Arten spiels das optische System eine gröβere Rolle. Hoch cephalisiert sind die Fischotter, der Neocortex ist sehr gut ausgebildet, das olfaktorische System dagegen reduziert.Die für die jeweiligen Unterfamilien ungewöhnlich hohen Cephalisationen und die entsprechenden Gröβen von Telencephalon und Neocortex beiConepatus chinga(Mephitinae),Taxidea taxus(Melinae),Eira Barbara(Mustelinae) undPteronura brasiliensis(Lutrinae) lassen sich nicht ohne weiteres als Adaptions‐ oder Spezialisationsphänomene erklären. Es wäre zu Rrüfen, ob besonders beiTaxidae taxus, Eira BarbaraundPteronura brasiliensisbesondere Leistungen des Zentralnervensystems vorliegen, z. B. Spiel, ausgeprägtes Neugierverhalten, gutes Lernvermögen, differenzierte Kommunikation. Manche Beobachtungen sprechen dafür; zum Beweis des Zusammenhangs zwischen sehr hoher Cephalisation sowie Neocorticalisation und besonderen Verhaltensweisen sind genauere Analysen notwendig. Es ist eine merkwürdige Tatsache, daβ die Mustelidenarten mit der höchsten Cephalisation in Amerika,
