ZusammenfassungDie Populationsgenetik untersucht, wie sich natürliche Populationen genetisch an ihre Umwelt anpassen, und deckt dabei anagenetische Prozesse auf. Während die meisten organismischen Strukturen unter starkem Selektionsdruck stehen, erscheint ein großer Tell der auf molekularer Ebene erkennbaren Allozymvariabilität als selektiv neutral. Gerade diese Neutralität erlaubt es aber, die zahlenmäßig gut definierbaren Unterschiede als, genetische Distanz' quantitativ zu bestimmen. Vergleicht man diese Distanzen zwischen Populationen derselben Art, Semispezies, Spezies and Gattungen, so zeigt sich bei der Kladogenese kein sprunghafter Umbau in den genetischen Populationsstrukturen. Die von S. Wrightvertretene, Balance‐Shift‐Theorie' und der von E. Mayrfür die Artbildung als typisch angesehene, Founder‐Effekt' lassen zwar eine Beschleunigung des Evolutionsprozesses bei oder unmittelbar nach der Artabspaltung erwarten, doch sind dadurch sprunghafte Umbauten der Populationen nicht wahrscheinlich. Die Divergenz bei der Artaufspaltung mag manchmal vielmehr bereits in den Populationen vorgefertigt vorliegen, wie es die verschiedenen chromosomalen Strukturtypen bei inversions‐polymorphenDrosophila‐Arten zeigen. Diese gehören bereits, wie die Zahlenwerte ihrer genetischen Distanz anzeigen, isolierten Genpools an und können bereits unterschiedliche Adaptationsstrategien entwickeln.SummaryPopulation genetic aspects of speciationExperimental population genetics deals mainly with the analysis of anagenetic processes. Studies on organismic structures revealed that genes determining them are usually under strong selective pressure; selective neutrality was, however, found for allozyme variability at the molecular level. Yet, just this neutrality makes data on allozyme variation particularly useful for the calculation of ‘genetic distances’. Comparing these distances between populations, semispecies, species and genera no indications appear for discontinuous or rectangular evolution during cladogenesis. Population genetic consequences of the ‘shifting‐balance’ theory of S. Wrightor of the ‘founder’ effect' of E. Mayrmake an increase in the rate of evolution during, or immediately after the speciation process probable but saltatory events are not to be expected. ZusammenfassungDie Realität der Art wird begründet und die Frage nach ihrer biologischen Bedeutung gestellt. In diesem Zusammenhang wird der jeweilige Anpassungsvorteil von Agamo‐ bzw. Biospezies gegenübergestellt. Der Artbegriff als zentrales Konzept der gesamten Biologie berücksichtigt die relative Konstanz ebenso wie die Veränderlichkeit in der Generationenfolge. Die Eigenständigkeit der evolvierenden Art und ihr historisch gewachsener Informationsgehalt werden aufrechterhalten durch genetische Homöostase und stabilisierende Selektion der spezifischen ökologischen Nische (Aspekt der Okospezies) und einen durch Fortpflanzungsisolation gegenüber anderen Gruppen geschützten gemeinsamen Genpool (Aspekt der Biospezies).Die Kriterien der Nische, Kreuzbarkeit (Genfluß) und Isolation ermöglichen die nicht‐willkürliche Artzuweisung, wobei es (neben Agamospezies) bei allopatrischen Populationen Probleme gibt. Die Existenz sympatrisch koexistierender, Synspezies' wird gewährleistet durch Eigenschaften der Isolation und Konkurrenzvermeidung (Koexistenzmechanismen).Isolation geht vom jeweiligen Organismus aus, im Gegensatz zur exogenen Unterbindung von Genfluß (= Separation). Unterschieden wird zwischen potentieller (= Isolationsfaktoren) und effektiver Fortpflanzungsisolation durch Isolationsmechanismen, welche wechselseitig selektiv kontrolliert sind, desgleichen zwischen potentiellen Koexistenzfaktoren und Koexistenzmechanismen. Isolation kann indirekt sein als Teil differenter ökologischer Nischen oder direkt über ein die Geschlechter betreffendes Kommunikationssystem.Im Prozeß der Speziation (Spaltung einer Linie) werden die verschiedenen Attribute von Arten schrittweise additiv evolviert, so daß sich verschiedene Zwischenstufen charakterisieren lassen. Vollendete Speziation wird bewiesen durch Fortpflanzungsisolation und ökologische Sonderung der Schwesterarten in Sympatrie (Synspezies).Für das Modell allopatrischer Speziation, in dem zeitweise Separation für den Differenzierungsprozeß der Populationen unbedingt notwendig ist, werden verschiedene Falle dargestellt. Betont wird die unterschiedliche Reihenfolge in Phänomenen, die allopatrisch, eingeleitet' und para‐ bzw. sympatrisch vollendet werden. So können morphologische und ökologische Unterschiede als erster Schritt entstehen, wobei die Isolation nachhinkt (Subspezies), oder umgekehrt als erstes Isolationsfaktoren entwickelt werden (Kryptospezies). Isolation und Koexistenzfähigkeit können indirekt als Nebenprodukt entstehen oder unter direkter Selektionswirkung in Allopatrie bzw. im Kontakt mit der Partnerart. Sind die Formen durch potentielle Koexistenzfaktoren and indirekte Isolationsfaktoren zur Sympatrie fähig, so können durch disruptive Selektion in einer Phase vorübergehender Bastardierung sekundär Isolationsmechanismen aufgebaut werden.In anderen Fällen ist die Auseinandersetzung in einer Hybridzone bedeutsam. Als wichtiges Durchgangsstadium erscheint parapatrische Verbreitung der Schwesterformen, wobei diese unvollständig (Semispezies) oder bereits völlig isoliert sein können (Paraspezies). Letztlich der Isolation und ökologischen Verträglichkeit dienende Unterschiede können entweder in den durch eine, Fertilitätsbarriere' getrennten Populationen entstehen oder durch selektive Verstärkung im Kontaktbereich, was zur Kontrastbetonung führt.Von diskutierten Wegen einer Speziation ohne Separation wird das stasipatrische Modell zur Erklärung einer chromosomalen Reorganisation im Zusammenhang mit einem Speziationsereignis vorgeführt, femer die Möglichkeit und die nötigen Voraussetzungen einer Artbildung durch Bastardierung zweier Arten. Schließlich wird diskutiert, unter welchen speziellen Voraussetzungen die Bildung einer neuen Biospezies über ein einelterliches Zwischenstadium denkbar wäre, und die Wahrscheinlichkeit dafür als gering eingeschätzt.SummarySpecies concept and speciation in the view of zoologistsThe reality and the biological meaning of species are substantiated. In this respect the selective advantage of agamospecies and biospecies is compared. The species concept being central for biology in total takes into consideration a relatively constancy as well as the modification in the sequence of generations. The evolutionary independence of a species and its genetic information accumulated in evolutionary history are preserved by genetic homeostasis and stabilizing selection of the specific ecological niche (aspect of ecospecies) and a common gene pool protected against other groups by reproductive isolation (aspect of biospecies).The definition of species is nonarbitrary applying niche, interbreeding (gene flow) and reproductive isolation as criteria. In addition to agamospecies It is a problem to establish species status of allopatric populations. Therefore a more or less synecological view is held. A sympatric existence of populations (‘synspecies’) is possible only if they possess isolating properties and mechanisms for coexistence avoiding competition.Isolation means internal barriers against gene flow in contrast to (geographic) separation if barriers are extrinsic to the organisms. We have to distinguish potential isolating factors and effective reproductive isolation by isolating mechanisms stabilized by selection. The same holds for properties favouring coexistence and mechanisms for coexistence. Indirect isolation is part of the different niches whereas direct isolation concerns divergent communication systems of the mates.It is possible to characterize different steps in the process of speciation (splitting of a lineage) since the different attributes of species are evolved gradually. The process is proved to be completed when the sister species are reproductively isolated and ecologically segregated in sympatric coexistence (synspecies).Different modes are discussed with respect of the allopatric model of speciation where the differentiation of populations depends on a period of separation. There are different possibilities in the sequence of attributes being initiated in allopatry and completed in para‐ or sympatry. Reproductive isolation may follow the morphological and ecological divergence (subspecies) and at other times precede it (cryptospecies). Isolation and properties allowing coexistence can be achieved as an incidental by‐product of other adaptive processes or under direct selection pressure both allopatrically and in contact with the sister form. Isolating mechanisms may be built up by disruptive selection in sympatry during a period of transient hybridization if two diverse forms are sympatric due to properties for coexistence and indirect isolation factors.A parapatric distribution of the sister forms coping within a hybrid belt seems to be an essential transient part for synspecies. In this stage their isolation may be partially (semi‐species) or completely (paraspecies). Any differences improving isolation and ecological compatibility may arise in populations separated by a fertility barrier or may be reinforced by selection in the contact zone leading to character displacement.From non‐allopatric models of speciation (without separation at any time) first the model of stasipatric speciation is discussed to explain chromosomal reorganization combined with a speciation event. ZusammenfassungDie Analyse von Artbildungsprozessen erfordert eingehende biologische, ökologische und populationsgenetische Kenntnisse der betreffenden Tiergruppen. Von besonderer Bedeutung ist die jeweilige ‘Nischenstruktur’. Bei bestimmten Tiergruppen, z. B. Parasitoiden oder spezialisierten phytophagen Organismen, sind zahlreiche Nischenelemente (Paarungsplatz, Eiablageplatz, larvale Nahrung, larvale Mortalitätsfaktoren usw.) gemeinsam auf einen Wirt oder eine Wirtspflanze lokalisiert. Solche Arten mit aggregierten Nischenelementen können durch einen Wechsel des Wirts gleichzeitig den Genfluß neu kanalisieren und zahlreiche ökologische Parameter abändern, so daß eine rasche Neu‐Einnischung möglich ist.Es wird ein Überblick über Speziationsmodelle und ihre Klassifikation gegeben. Entscheidend für die einzelnen Modelle ist, ob rein exogene, gemischt exogen‐endogene oder rein bzw. vorwiegend endogene Barrieren den Genfluß einschränken bzw. unterbinden.Es folgt eine Erörterung parapatrischer und sympatrischer Speziationsmodelle. Dabei wird auf Speziatiogsprozesse durch gleichzeitigen Wechsel von Habitat‐ und Nahrungsnische besonders eingegangen. Als Indiz für solche Prozesse wird die sympatrische ökologische Divergenz bei Wirtsrassen geschildert. Eine Voraussetzung für die Wirtsrassenbildung ist die bei Arthropoden weit verbreitete Kopplung der Wahl des Paarungs‐ und Eiablageplatzes (wirtsspezifisches ‘Rendezvous‐Verhalten’). Bei Schmetterlingen und Rüsselkäfern bestehen Beziehungen zwischen dem Vorkommen dieses Verhaltens und der Speziationsrate. Die auf dem Rendezvous‐Verhalten aufgebauten Modelle einer sympatrischen wirtsbezogenen Speziation von Bush(1975 b) und Bushund Diehl(1982) werden erläutert.Das vorliegende Beobachtungsmaterial erlaubt den Schluß, daß neben geographischen Artbildung und bestimmten Voraussetzungen auch nicht‐geographische Speziationsprozesse bei Tieren möglich sind. Wichtiger als die Betonung von geographischen und nicht‐geographischen Barrieren erscheint der Umstand, daß einzelne Elemente des Speziationsprozesses kombiniert auftreten können, daß sie mit sehr unterschiedlicher Geschwindigkeit ablaufen können und daß sie entscheidend von biologischen, ökologischen und genetischen Eigenarten der jeweiligen Tiergruppen mitgeprägt werden.SummarySympatric and parapatric speciationThe analysis of speciation processes requires a detailed knowledge of biological, ecological and genetic facts. The niche structure of an animal species is of particular importance. In parasitoids and many specialized phytophagous organisms niche elements such as the mating site, oviposition site, larval food resources and density‐controlling factors are coupled and localized at a specific host or host plant. In such cases a transfer to a new host may simultaneously channel the gene flow and completely change the food and habitat niche.The classification of speciation processes as proposed by different authors is discussed. The type of the barriers to gene flow (exclusively extrinsic, extrinsic and intrinsic or predominately intrinsic) characterize the single speciation models.We then describe models of parapatric and sympatric speciation. Emphasis is given to those processes which are due to a simultaneous shift of the habitat and food niche. We discuss host races as a result of a sympatric ecological divergence. A prerequisite for the formation of host races is the coupling of host selection and selection of sites for courthship and mating. Examples are given to demonstrate the wide distribution of this phenomenon among arthropods. Among the Lepidoptera and Curculionidae there exist relationships between speciation rates and the occurrence or non‐occurrence of host‐specific mating places. The models of sympatric speciation by Bush(1975 b) and Bushand Diehl(1982) are based on this positively assortative mating behaviour.The available data allow the conclusion that in addition to geographic speciation processes of non‐geographic speciation are possible in certain groups of animals. ZusammenfassungKlassische and moderne Praktiken, Konzepte and Probleme der botanischen Systematik und Taxonomie im Hinblick auf die Species‐Kategorie werden anhand von etwa 25 besser bekannten Gruppen von Samenpflanzen illustriert. Die grobe Mannigfaltigkeit an verschiedenen Artbildungsmustem und Evolutionsstrategien läbt sich auf mehrere Komponenten zurückführen: Variation (z. B. Modifikationen bzw. Gen‐, Chromosomen‐ und Genommutationen, Rekombination und Hyridisierung), Reproduktion (z. B. Allogamie, Autogamie und/oder Apomixis, Genflub, Generationsdauer and Ausbreitung), genetische Kanalisation und Fixierung (z. B. verschiedene Arten and Intensitäten der Selektion, genetische Drift, Gröbe und Stabilität der Populationen), Separation und Isolation (z. B. exogene und/oder endogene Faktoren, Inkompatibilität, Hybridsterilität) und räumliche Aspekte (z. B. Alter, Struktur und Nischendifferenzierung der Standorte, allo‐, peri‐, para.‐odersympatnsches Vorkommen verwandter Sippen). Aufgrund verschiedener Korrelationen zwischen diesen Parameters lassen sich gewisse Syndrome und Speciestypen erkennen; sie werden im breiteren Rahmen der Lebensformengruppen vieljähriger Holzpflanzen, mehrjähriger Stauden und einjähriger Krautpflanzen herausgestellt.Widersprüche zwischen dem taxonomischen und dem, biologischen‘ Specieskonzept sind bei Sippengruppen der Samenpflanzen fast die Regel: Sie resultieren u. a. aus der verzögerten Ausbildung endogener Kreuzungsbarrieren zwischen sonst bereits sehr deudich abgesetzten und normalerweise durch exogene Barrieren voneinander getrennten Taxa (wie z. B. bei vielen langlebigen homoploiden und˝hybridisierenden Gruppen), aus Diskrepanzen zwischen Kreuzbarkeit bzw. Hybridbildung und phylogenetischer Verwandtschaft (wie z. B. bei zahlreichen perennierenden und polyploiden Komplexen), aus der Entstehung kryptischer, infraspezifischerlsquo; reproduktiver Barrieren, welche nicht mit der morphologischen Differenzierung parallel gehen (wie z. B. bei vielen Gruppen annueller Krautpflanzen), etc. Die Anwendbarkeit der, Biologischen Species' und der vielen anderen sonst noch unterschiedenen Typen von, Species' ist daher in der taxonomischen Praxis stark eingeschränkt. Demgegenüber hat sich die allgemeine Nützlichkeit und Notwendigkeit der Taxonomischen Species erwiesen; für sie sollte der Speciesbegriff in seinem ursprünglichen und engeren Sinn reserviert bleiben. Demnach empfiehlt sich ein flexibles und pragmatisches Konzept für diese grundlegende taxonomische Kategorie: Die Species sollte auf solche kleinsten Sippeneinheiten bezogen werden, welche sich von alien anderen Sippeneinheiten in ausreichendem Mab durch exo‐ bzw. endogene Isolation abheben und durch erbliche, konstante und praktikable Merkmale trennen lassen.SummarySpecies concept and speciation, a botanical perspectiveClassical and modern practice, concepts and problems of botanical systematics and taxonomy in regard to the species category are illustrated in some detail by about 25 examples from better known seed plant groups. The great variety of different speciation patterns and evolutionary strategies encountered is apparently due to several components: variation (e. g. modifications and gene, chromosome and genome mutations, recombination and hybridization), reproduction (e. g. allogamy, autogamy and / or apomixis, gene flow, generation sequence and dispersal), genetic canalisation and fixation (e. g. different kinds and intensities of selection, genetic drift, size and stability of populations), separation and isolation (e. g. exogenous and / or endogenous factors, incompatibility, hybrid sterility), and spatial aspects (e. g. age, structure and niche differentiation of habitats, allopatric, peripatric, parapatric or sympatric occurrence of related taxa). From various correlations between these parameters it is possible to recognize certain syndromes and species types which are presented within the broad framework of long‐lived arborescent, perennial herbaceous and short‐lived annual life form groups.Conflicts between the taxonomical and the ‘biological’ species concept are common in seed plant groups; they result i. a. from the delayed origin of endogenous crossing barriers between otherwise already very distinct taxa normally separated by exogenous barriers (as in many long‐lived homoploid and˝hybridizing groups), from the discrepancies between crossability or hybrid links and phylogenetic relationships (as in many perennial polyploid complexes), from the origin of cryptic ‘infra‐specific’ reproductive barriers which do not parallel the morphological differentiation (as in numerous annual groups), etc. The applicability of the ‘biological species’ and of the numberous other types of ‘species’ recognized is therefore quite limited in taxononucal practice. This contrasts with the general usefulness and necessity of the taxonomical species for which the term species in its original and narrower sense should be reserved. A flexible and pragmatic concept of this basic taxonomic category is recommended from our experience in seed plants: The species category should be applied to those smallest uni‐ or biparental population groups which appear sufficiently isolated and differentiated from each other by exogenous and / or exogenous

ZusammenfassungZahlreiche Autoren haben betont, daß, evolutionary Arten' objektive Einheiten im Evolutionsprozeß seien. Sie haben Artkonzepte formuliert, die solche Einheiten beschreiben and die als die Basis für die Identifikation konkreter evolutionärer Arten angesehen werden. Die verschiedenen Artkonzepte können jedoch in drei verschiedene Gruppen eingeteilt werden, je nachdem welche Betonung sie legen auf 1. Amransformation, 2. Aufspaltung von Arten and 3. Abzweigen neuer Arten. Es wird gefolgert a. daß keines der vorgeschlagenen Konzepte objektive Kriterien für die Diagnose evolutionärer Arten liefert, and b. daß der Fossilbericht praktisch nie für die direkte Anwendung von Artabgrenzungskriterien ausreicht.SummarySpecies‐delimination and the concept of the evolutionary species in PalaeontologySeveral authors have claimed that ‘evolutionary species’ are objective entities in the evolutionary process. They have formulated species concepts which describe such entities and which are seen as the basis for the identification of concrete evolutionary species. However, the different species concepts can be grouped into three different classes according to the different emphasis they put on: 1. species trans‐formation, 2. splitting of species and 3. branching‐off of new species.
