SummaryExperiments were performed to study the effects of selection at the Adh locus ofDrosopbila melanogasterin populations kept under laboratory conditions. Our data can be interpreted best by assuming frequency‐dependent selection. To describe the situation linear regression analysis was employed by using the frequency of the genotypes as independent variable and the natural logarithm of the Wrightian fitness as dependent variable. SummaryThe subfossil of records ofBosmina (Eubosmina)in a sediment from the Großer Plöner See suggest that the appearance ofBosmina reflexamorphs in the postglacial period was due to increasing morphological variation inBosmina longispina. In the postglacial period two species of the subgenusEubosmina, Bosmina longispinaandB. coregoni, were co‐occurring during a period of more than 8000 years. They were always clearly separated by morphological characteristics. This separation became even more distinct during the lake development due to divergent morphological variation in both species. SummaryOn the basis of 26 mandibular measurements performed of 272 individuals from 52 localities, inter‐specific morphological variance (23.8 % of the total variance) and morphological distances were computed by a discriminant analysis between four species of shrews,Sorex araneus, S. coronatus, S. granariesandS. samniticus, which are parapatric in Southern Europe. These distances show a low correlation (r = 0.330) with the genetic distances evaluated by electrophoretic studies. Multiple regression analyses showed that 26.3 % of the total morphological variance of these shrews can be explained by the geoclimatic conditions they meet in their environment, and allowed to remove this selective effect by using the residues of these regressions. The remaining interspecific variance is distributed randomly on the principal components computed on these residues, and thus it has to be admitted that the selection has not another influence on the registered morphological variation. This remaining interspecific variance is only 2.9 % of the total morphological variance, which leads to conclude that 20.9/23.8 = 87.8 % of the interspecific variance are mere consequences of the parapatric distribution of these shrews. The morphological distances computed on the residual, which are independent of selection, are clearly correlated to the genetic distances (r = 0.922). The ecological and evolutionary entanglements of these results are discussed.RésuméDerive génétique et sélection: Leur importance respective dans la différentiation morphologique et génétique de quatre espéces de musaraignes dans le sud de l'Europe (Insectivora, Soricidae)Une analyse discriminante fondée sur 26 mesures mandibulaires a permis de calculer la variance inter‐spécifique (23.8 % de la variance totale) et les distances morphologiques entre 4 especes de musaraignes,Sorex araneus, S. coronatus, S. granarius et S. samniticus, qui sont parapatriques dans le sud de l'Europe. SummaryThis paper critically deals with a publication of Ebbesson(1980), who presents a so‐called parcellation theory of brain development. According to the parcellation theory, the increasing complexity of the brain, during ontogenetic and phylogenetic development, could be understood as a process of differentiation of principally given structures and not by invasive development of totally new elements. The parcellation theory is supported by results of comparative, as well as ontogenetic studies. The following points of Ebbesson's work are criticized: 1. A lack of references to the work of earlier authors, 2. a neglect of well known anatomical data, which do not support the presented thoughts, and 3. an uncritical, formalistic interpretation of ontogenetic data in terms of phylogeny.ZusammenfassungBemerkungen zu Ebbessons Darstellung einer Parzellierungs‐Theorie der HirnentwicklungDie vorliegende Arbeit setzt sich kritisch mit einer Darstellung Ebbessons(1980) auseinander, in der eine sogenannte Parzellierungs‐Theorie, (parcellation theory') der Hirnentwicklung vorgestellt wird. Nach der Parzellierungs‐Theorie ist die zunehmende Komplexität des Gehims in der ontogenetischen und phylogenetischen Entwicklung ein Differenzierungsprozefβ, der auf grundsätzlich Vorhandenem aufbaut und nicht durch invasive Entwicklung völlig neuer Elemente zu verstehen sei. SummaryThe brain composition of 14 species of shrews was compared. Using brain evolution in primates as a model, attempts were made to evaluate the evolutionary levels reached by the various species and higher taxonomic units of shrews. On the average there are clear differences between Soricinae and Crocidurinae in the relative size of their striatum and neocortex. In the neocortex, the percentage of the molecular layer relative to the neocortical grey is distinctly lower in Soricinae than in Crocidurinae. All results point to greater brain development in Soricinae and thus confirm the results of our first paper on encephalization and macromorphology (Fonset al. 1984).Of the Soricinae, the New World species have more highly developed brains on the average. The Eurasian water shrew has an especially large medulla oblongata and a small olfactory bulb. All data are discussed with reference to biological strategies. The parallellism between brain development and niche diversification is stressed.Interspecific differences in Crocidurinae are less pronounced, but inSuncusthe brains appear generally somewhat less developed than inCrocidura. The tinySuncus etruscusis similar to the relatively largeSuncus murinus, but has a somewhat better developed brain stem and cerebellum and less developed telencephalon.RésuméL'encéphale des Soricidés. II. Comparaison volumétrique des composantes encéphaliquesLa structure du cerveau de 14 espèces d'Insectivores Soricidae a été comparée. Par rapport à 1′évolution du cerveau chez les primates, on a essayé, chez les musaraignes, d'évaluer les niveaux d'évolution atteints parles différmites espèces et des unités taxonomiques supérieures. En moyenne, it existe de nettes différences entre les Soricinae et les Crocidurinae au niveau de la taille relative du striatum et du neocortex. A I'intérieur du neocortex, le pourcentage de la couche moléculaire relative à la substance grist néocorticale est nettement plus bas chez les Soricinae que chez Ies Crocidurinae. Tous les résultats montrent un développement du cerveau plus élevé chez les Soricinae et confinnent ainsi les résultats de notre premier article sur l'encéphalisation et la macromorphologie (Fonset al. 1984).Chez les representants de la sous‐famille des Soricinae, les especes du Nouveau Monde ont en moyenne, les cerveaux les plus développés. Der prozentuale Anteil der Molekularschicht am neocorticalen Grau ist bei Soricinen merklich geringer als bei Crocidurinen. Alle Befunde deuten auf eine höhere Entwicklung des Gehims bei den Soricinen hin und stimmen hierin mit den Ergebnissen unserer ersten Arbeit über Encephalisation und Makromorphologie überein (Fonset al. 1984).Die neuweltlichen Soricinen höben durchschnittlich hoher entwickelte Gehime als die altweltlichen Arten. Die Eurasische Wasserspitzmaus zeichnet sich durch eine besonders groβe Medulla oblongata und einen kleinen Bulbus olfactorius aus. Summary1. The dentition of the Indian caeciliidGegeneophis ramaswamiifrom South India is described using SEM‐micrographs.2. The arrangement of the teeth does not differ significantly from that of other Gymnophiona investigated so far.3. Teeth crowns of the upper jaw, however, show different degrees of bicuspidity; vomers, palatines and splenials have bicuspid teeth; the dentaries exhibit, with the exception of the most caudal tooth, monocuspids with a cusp extending in sharp edges.4. Obviously two types of monocuspid teeth occur in the Amphibia. Spike‐like teeth with one single conical point, typical for larval Urodela, but also known from some adult Anura, might be regarded as less advanced (“primitive”) and teeth with one cusp extending in sharp edges of variable form, which hitherto are unknown from larval Amphibia. The latter type and the widely spread bicuspid tooth as well as transitional stages between bicuspids and (transformed) monocuspids are suggested to be derived characters.5. Summary1. Lake loannina (Greece) is occupied by three sympatric water‐frog phenotypes, which by bioacoustic and morphological criteria representR. ridibunda, a new species ofRana, and hybrids of these two species.2. The unnamed water‐frog species receives the nameRana epeiroticasp. n., Epeirus frog, after the site in the Epeirus region at which it was collected.3. The mating calls are specific and hence are a very reliable discriminator of these water frogs.The mating call ofR. epeiroticaconsists of a series of very brief pulses produced at relatively long intervals. The call therefore has a rattling sound. When the temperature rises the call duration and the pauses between the calls decrease, while the number of pulses per call and the pulse repetition rate increase.The mating call ofR. ridibundaconsists of pulse groups. When the water temperature rises the pulse groups and the intervals between the groups become shorter; the result is a reduction in call duration, because the number of pulse groups per call does not change.The mating call of the hybrids resembles that ofR. esculenta. Neither the number of pulse groups per call nor the number of pulses per group changes with temperature, but the temperature does affect the call duration as well as the intervals between the pulse groups and between the calls.4.R. ridibundaandR. epeiroticadiffer from one another in a number of morphological parameters, and the hybrids are intermediate between the two. InR. ridibundathe callus intemus is appreciably larger than inR. epeirotica. The most important character ratios by which the three phenotypes can be distinguished from one another are body length/tibia length, body length/length of callus intemus, and digitus primus length/length of callus intemus.5. During the reproductive period the color and markings of the animals are additional important aids to identification. The tympana are brown inR. ridibunda, green inR. epeiroticaand bronze‐colored in the hybrids. The coloration of the back and the patterns on the thighs are also characteristic. As inR. ridibunda, the males ofR. epeiroticaand of the hybrids have gray to black vocal sacs.ZusammenfassungBio‐akustische und morphometrische Untersuchungen an Wasserfröschen (Gattung Rana) des loannina‐Sees in Griechenland und Beschreibung einer neuen Art (Anura, Amphibia)1. Bei Zunahme der Wassertemperatur verkiirzen sich die Impulsgruppen und die Intervalle zwischen ihnen, was zu einer Verminderung der Rufdauer führt, da die Anzahl der Impulsgruppen pro Ruf sich nicht ändert.Der Paarungsruf der Hybriden ähnelt dem vonR. esculenta. Die Zahl der Impulsgruppen pro Rufsowie die Anzahl der Impulse pro Gruppe ändem sich nicht mit der Temperatur, wohl aber die Rufdauer, die Intervalle zwischen den Impulsgruppen and den Rufen.4.R. ridibundaundR. epeiroticasind durch eine Anzahl morphologischer Parameter unterschieden, während die Hybriden intermediär sind. Für die Unterscheidung der drei Wasserfrosch‐Phänotypen sind die wichtigsten Indices: Körperlänge/Tibia‐Länge, Körperlänge/Länge des Callus intemus und Länge der ersten Zehe/Länge des Callus intemus.5. Während der Fortpflanzungsperiode sind auch Färbung und Zeichnungsmuster wichtige Hilfsmittel zur Unterscheidung.
