摘要:
The vocal repertoire of the pukeko,Porphyria porphyria melanotusTemminck (Aves: Rallidae), is described. Twenty-five call types, in 9 broad categories, are recognised and the structure, context, and apparent function of each are given. The calls are illustrated by sonagrams. Sexual dimorphism in, and intergradation of, calls are discussed with respect to the social organisation of the species, and are compared to those of other Rallidae. The complex vocal repertoire is considered to be well adapted to the highly social way of life of this species.

Four brush-tailed possums were fitted with radio transmitters and located hourly on 3 nights each month for 2 years. The home ranges found by this technique are compared with those revealed by live-trapping on a 30 × 30 m interval grid in lowland indigenous forest during the same 2-year period. The minimum-area method, a modified minimum-area method, range lengths, 3 boundary-strip methods, and Koeppl's elliptical method are compared. Estimates of home range based on trap-revealed and radio-revealed data differed greatly; the areas of home ranges found by the use of radios were mostly considerably larger than those revealed by live-traps. The activity centres of the home ranges found by trapping corresponded well with those found by radio-tracking.

摘要:
Two nodaviruses, both isolated from New Zealand scarab beetles, replicated in DSIR-HA-1179 (HA) cells derived from the black beetle,Heteronychus arator(Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae). Black beetle virus and Flock House virus, isolated from the grass grub (Costelytra zealandica) produced a characteristic cytopathic effect in cells. Virus replication was demonstrated by showing viral RNA synthesis in infected cells. A comparison between HA cells and cells derived fromDrosophila melanogaster(line 1) showed that theDrosophilacells were twice as sensitive for detecting black beetle virus and 5 times as sensitive for detecting Flock House virus. Replication of Flock House virus inDrosophilacells was more rapid and more productive than in HA cells.

摘要:
The 18th International Ethological Conference was attended by over 450 delegates from 29 nations. Forty percent of these were from Australia, and about 25% each from North America and Europe. New Zealand provided 14 delegates, mostly from the universities, and 11 papers by 10 authors. The University of Queensland campus at St Lucia was a very suitable setting with its spacious grounds and facilities, and the bonus of opportunities to observe some Australian wildlife — possums, flying foxes, turtles, birds, amphibia, and invertebrates — on site.
