摘要:
A scanning electron microscope examination was made of the transverse and lateral carinae and other surface structures on the pronota of 4 anthribines:Gynarchaeus ornatus(Sharp),Pleosporius bullatus(Sharp),Lawsonia variabilisSharp, andEuciodes suturalisPascoe. The transverse and lateral carinae are composed of minute, alternating, bract units and pillars. Each bract unit consists of a curved bract overhanging a cavity which has a spatulate seta arising from its floor. The basal rim of the pronotum consists of much larger bract units and pillars, and the cavity beneath each bract contains a long filamentous seta. Similar large bract units may also be present in the secondary carinae and on the sides of the pronotal declivity. The function of the bract units is not known.

摘要:
Karakin [l,2,6-tri(3-nitropropanoyl)-β-D-glucopyranose], derived from the roots ofLotus pedunculatus, was administered to third-instar larvae ofCostelytra zealandicaby oral injection. Within 10 min, karakin itself could no longer be detected. Nitro compounds recovered from body extracts, amounting to only 20% of the amount injected, were present as free 3-nitropropionic acid and associated with a dichloromethane/ethanol insoluble fraction. Rapid hydrolysis of karakin was also shown by homogenates of larval gut fractions: the hydrolytic activity was largely enzymic and was localised predominantly in the first half of the rudimentary gut of the grass grub.

摘要:
Autotriploidy is described in a female of the endemic New Zealand frogLeiopelma hochstetteri. This frog was found to have 3n=33 chromosomes plus 2 supernumerary chromosomes. All the chromosomes in the karyotype of this species contained C-band heterochromatin at the centromeres. A prominent C-band was found to be associated with a secondary constriction on chromosome no. 7. The supernumerary chromosomes in this species appear to be mitotically stable and contain C-band heterochromatin at the centromeres. From the limited data presently available, the triploid individual may have resulted from the fertilisation of a diploid egg produced when the second meiotic division had been suppressed.

摘要:
Chemical and physical characteristics of infertile takahe eggs, 1 laid by a wild bird and 3 laid in captivity, were analysed and compared. The lipid composition of these eggs resembled that of domestic hen eggs, there being high levels of triacylglycerol (64%) and phospholipids (27%). The content of individual fatty acids was determined: linoleic acid (an essential fatty acid) was in similar concentrations in eggs laid in captivity and in the wild. The results suggest that the amount of essential fatty acids in the diets of captive and wild females was sufficient for them to produce eggs which would hatch healthy progeny.
