摘要:
A new species of feather mite (Acari: Analgidae),Kiwialges haastiin. sp. is described from the great spotted kiwi,Apteryx haastiiPotts, 1872. Four new host records are reported and a key to species ofKiwialgesis presented.

摘要:
Larvae of 9 species are described and illustrated. They areEuryomma peregrinum(Meigen),Fannia albitarsisStein,F. canicularis(Linnaeus), and 6 unnamed species of which 5 are endemic. The larvae living in guano of the New Zealand short-tailed bat have retained a circular posterior spiracular plate with a typical cyclorrhaphous arrangement of the spiracular openings. Larvae of a subantarctic species have as many as 20 lobes on the anterior spiracle. The morphology and possible role of the paired segmental outgrowths of fanniid larvae are discussed.

摘要:
A phalanx of Haumurian age (Late Cretaceous, 65–80 m.y. B.P.) found near the Mangahouanga Stream, Hawke's Bay, North Island, New Zealand, probably pertains to either a land bird or a theropod dinosaur. It is significant in that it further demonstrates the existence of an insular terrestrial vertebrate fauna in New Zealand, well after the land mass had become separated from East Gondwanaland.

摘要:
The distribution and the condition of the habitat of each of the land snails in the genusPowelliphantaare presented and the predation on each is reported. Distribution was assessed from field surveys and the literature, habitat from the condition of the vegetation, and predation from collections of empty shells showing diagnostic patterns of damage by rats, pigs, wekas, either kakas or keas or both, and either European blackbirds or song thrushes or both. The current status of each member of the genus is thereby assessed, and all are ranked in order of conservation priority.

摘要:
A population comprisingCelatoblatta peninsularisandParellipsidion pachycercumwas sampled from Banks Peninsula, New Zealand over 1 year. Sub-adult cockroaches were assigned to 6 size classes (probably instars) by interocular distance and hind femur length.P. pachycercumwas most abundant in December and January and adults were abundant in most months. In contrast,C. peninsulariswas most abundant from February to June and adults were rare except in November. Adult females were less abundant than adult males in both species. Although both species may be bivoltine, they use difference overwintering strategies.

摘要:
The sex ratios of 4 geographically separated populations of brush-tailed possums sampled by trapping or poisoning with cyanide paste were generally imbalanced towards males. An examination of the absolute sex ratio in 1 population indicated such biases may not be real. Age distributions of sampled and absolute populations also differed, with most samples containing few old males. Sex and age biases probably result from the sampling procedures, with animal mobility influencing each animal's susceptibility to trapping or poisoning. As males are more mobile than females of similar age, the former are generally taken more frequently.

摘要:
Three years after a population of brush-tailed possums (Trichosurus vulpeculaKerr) in 100 ha of podocarp/mixed hardwood forest in Westland had been trapped to extinction, the study area had been recolonised and the population density was lowest in the alpine forest (> 600 m) and highest in the forest which bordered improved pasture (< 400 m). Animals dispersed upwards from this low-altitude forest and laterally into the area along the altitude gradient. Few adults entered the area, and immature (8-18 months old) males constituted the largest dispersive class. Sex-specific and age-specific dispersal rates led to an unstable age structure in the post-kill population. A higher proportion of breeding females and good condition in the post-kill population favoured an accelerated recovery of the population in the area.

摘要:
Temperature limits have been determined for the rockfish (Acanthoclinus quadridactylus). Subjecting this fish to different temperatures has shown that it acclimates by tolerating suboptimal temperatures and does not compensate by producing isoenzymes. Poor survival at low temperatures indicates thatAcanthoclinusis close to its southern distribution limit at Kaikoura.

摘要:
A method is proposed for estimating the niche overlap between 2 species where the use, by each species, of the resource being considered can be approximated by a Weibull distribution. A numerical method for calculating the standard error of the estimate is suggested.
