The chitonCallochiton kapitiensisMestayer, 1926 is redescribed, including characters not recorded by Mestayer. The radula is described and illustrated for the first time. The distribution is recorded and a synonymy provided. Records ofCallochiton puniceusGould, 1846 from New Zealand which have led to its inclusion in the New Zealand chiton fauna refer to specimens ofCallochiton kapitiensisMestayer. Characters separating the 2 species are presented. Van Belle (1983) considered the subgenusOcellochitonAshby, 1939 to be of genus rank; if his criteria are followed, Mestayer's species should belong here. The significance of this and the status ofOcellochitonare discussed.OcellochitonAshby, 1939 is regarded as a synonym ofCallochitonGray, 1847.

Helminth parasites were recovered from a male Atlantic bottle-nose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) found dead in Otago Harbour, South Island, New Zealand. The dolphin was found to have a kidney neoplasm. The parasites found were:Synthesium tursionis(Digenea);Anisakis simplex, Skrjabinalius cryptocephalus, Stenurus ovatus(Nematoda);Bolbosomasp. (Acanthocephala);Phyllobothriumsp. (Cestoda).Skrjabinalius cryptocephalusis reported from this host for the first time;Synthesium tursionisandSkrjabinalius cryptocephalusare reported from the Southern Hemisphere for the first time. A checklist of the parasites of the Atlantic bottle-nose dolphin is included. Voucher specimens have been deposited in the National Museum, Wellington, New Zealand.

The population dynamics of the deposit-feederAxiothella serrataKudenov & Read was investigated in Pauatahanui Inlet using seasonal transect samples processed through 500-μm mesh, and more frequent, fine-sieved samples, during the juvenile recruitment period. New recruits began to appear in October–November, at first as buried aggregations of 4- to 7-setiger juveniles. The aggregations, up to 15 m−2and composed of up to at least 900 juveniles, are believed to represent groups of lecithotrophic siblings developing directly from egg masses spawned sub-surface. Once surface-dwelling at about the 6-setiger stage, juveniles dispersed rapidly over the intertidal zone. Frequency distributions of juvenile setiger development indicated that synchronised spawning of adults occurred at intervals during an approximately 6-month period from October to April in 1978–79. Juvenile density peaked at about 29 000 m−2in December 1978 (250 μm sieve estimate), and mortality after recruitment ceased was about 96% in 6 weeks. Three age classes, 0, I, and II+, were separable by width size-frequencies in November and February quarterly samples; I and II+ had merged by May. By November, densities of I plus II+ classes ranged from 270 to 550 m−21977–1979. Density of new recruits varied from year to year, and this was possibly linked to variation in the size of the spawning II+ class. Width modes indicated 110 μm recruits grew into 1600 μm adults in 2 years. Zonation patterns were variable and age specific, differing even between young and old juveniles. Wave erosion may be an important cause of juvenile dispersal.

After occurring sporadically in New Zealand since 1921, the common wasp,Vespula vulgaris(L.), was found in March and April 1983 to be established in Dunedin, where 6 nests were discovered. Subsequent examination of museum specimens showed that queens had been collected in Wellington in 1978, and nests by January 1982. Christchurch was invaded in early 1984, several workers were collected near Auckland in March and April 1984, and workers were reported at Nelson in March and May 1984. The Dunedin nests were up to 6 times the size of nests recorded from the Northern Hemisphere, and produced up to 23 times as many new queens. Workers, nest size, and nest productivity were sufficiently different from those reported in western North America to suggest that the New Zealand population originated elsewhere. Colour patterning of the head and pronotum readily separate New ZealandV. vulgarisfrom New ZealandV. germanica.The nest carton ofV. vulgarisis brown; that ofV. germanicais grey. Conditions in New Zealand appear to be favourable forV. vulgaris; it can be expected to spread and it may at times reach the high population levels experienced in Europe and the western United States.

Live-trapping and radio-tracking were used to monitor the movements of brush-tailed possums in and around an erosion-control planting of poplars. Possums' use of the planted area was monitored by traffic counters and by marking (with Rhodamine B dye) possums which climbed the poplars. The extent of browse damage to the poplars was also recorded. Over a period of 20 months, 358 individuals were trapped, marked, and released, and 50 were fitted with radio transmitter collars. The study area was mapped into nine 100-m-wide annular zones radiating out from the focus, Zone 0, which contained the poplars. Seventy percent of possums assigned to Zone 1 were caught in Zone 0, but only 24%, 5%, and 0% assigned to Zones 2, 3, and 4–8 respectively were caught in Zone 0. Trapping and radio-tracking revealed no increase in the use of the planted area during the spring flush although the poplars were being damaged. Traces of Rhodamine B dye on the possums showed that 87% of animals caught in Zone 0 had visited the poplars, but only 45%, 10%, and 0% of possums caught in Zones 1, 2, and 3–8 respectively. Possums in this area were sedentary and damage to the poplars during spring was attributed to local animals only. Protection of the poplars by fitting expandable plastic sleeves was found to be more cost-effective than aerial poisoning of the surrounding possum population.

Incremental lines in the canine teeth of 20 stoats (Mustela erminea) corresponded exactly with known age in 5 males and 7 females marked as young, and with minimum-known age in 6 males and 2 females marked as adults. The lines are added in autumn (April and May) of each year, beginning when the animals are 6 months old. The correlation is accurate enough to permit determination of the ages of wild-caught adult stoats of unknown age. Two other techniques used previously (baculum weight, post-orbital ratio of the skull) are confirmed as accurate but much less precise methods of distinguishing young from adult stoats.
