AbstractThis article examines the effects of anthropogenic landscape modification in the upper drainage basin of the Río Verde on environments and populations of the lower Río Verde Valley, Oaxaca, Mexico. Archaeological and geomorphological research conducted by the Río Verde Formative Project indicates that Late Formative (400–100 B.C.) population growth and agricultural intensification in the Oaxaca and Nochixtlán valleys increased erosion and runoff from the Verde's upper drainage. This geomorphic change in the highland valleys altered the drainage system and led to increased flooding and alluviation in the lower Río Verde Valley. The environmental effect in the lower valley may have increased the agricultural potential of the region, leading to population growth, and at least indirectly to social

AbstractAn integrated suite of seismic geophysical surveys including seismic refraction, refraction tomography, and high resolution reflection was utilized in the areas within the Sphinx Enclosure, the Sphinx Temple, and in the surrounding desert areas to the east and south of the Sphinx. The purposes of the investigations were to analyze the depth and distribution of weathering in the exposed limestone bedrock, search for voids/cavities around and under the Sphinx, and describe the bedrock configuration where buried by sands in the adjacent desert areas. The survey discovered that subsurface weathering below the floor of the Sphinx Enclosure is not uniform, suggesting varied periods of subaerial exposure for different portions of the excavation. A series of cavities on each side of the Sphinx, as well as between its paws, was defined. Further, the sand‐buried bedrock surface in the desert area shows evidence of several excavated, or possibly downfaulted, structure

AbstractThis article concerns, first, the development of an approach to data analysis of sedimentological, micro‐ and macrofaunal, and artifactual data obtained from analysis of geoarchaeological sediment core samples and, second, an algorithmic ordering of resulting sediment groups to arrive at a definitive stratigraphic sequence. Correspondence analysis (CA) was the principal data analysis technique applied, and the algorithmic ordering is one developed for discrete sampling sequences such as core transects. From a methodological standpoint, this approach allows an assessment of the usefulness of different types of analytical information pertaining to a paleoenvironmental reconstruction of a coastal archaeological site.
