An anatomical and neuropharmacological study of the urethra was performed in 19 patients after prostatectomy to investigate the mechanism of continence. Anatomically, the urethral segment responsible for the postprostatectomy continence was located distal to the open prostatic fossa in the external sphincter which is comprised of intrinsic striated muscle and is called arbitrarily rhabdosphincter by the author. This unique striated muscle in the rhabdosphincter appears to be primarily under the α-adrenergic influence in view of the change in the urethral pressure profile observed following α-adrenergic drug

An antigen sharing common antigenic determinants with Australia-Antigen was found in the renal excretory ducts of human fetuses. Moreover, in the sera from patients suffering from kidney tumours, antibodies against Australia-Antigens should be found. This has not been proven by us, nor has the presence of this kind of fetorenal antigen in the tissues of 25 renal carcinomas been found using a very sensitive radioimmunoassay. Therefore, the search for an Australia-Antigen-like antibody or antigen cannot be used as a tumour test nor has the theory of the carcinogenesis yet been questioned.

3 patients with renal transplantation who developed polycythemia presented normalization of the hemoglobin levels immediately after nephrectomy of the native kidneys. This observation induced the authors to study the role of the native kidneys in the genesis of polycythemia in recipients of renal allografts. Comparison was made among 32 patients submitted to renal transplantation, with maintenance of native kidneys (group I) and among 31 under the same conditions, but without the native kidneys (group II). Both groups were comparable according to age, sex, rejection crisis incidence and immunosuppressive therapy. It was observed that the hemoglobin levels of group I were significantly higher (p < 0.05 to p < 0.005) than those observed in group II, from the 3rd to the 30th posttransplantation month, becoming comparable from the 36th to the 54th months. The hemoglobin production, measured by the kinetics of labeled iron (59Fe), was higher in patients of group I. The authors concluded that the native kidneys are responsible for the observed polycythemia after a kidney transplantation.

In patients with various genitourinary neoplasms, except in those with untreated bladder carcinoma, changes of SLDH and SLDH-V fraction levels owing to hyperglycemic conditions were statistically not significant to the pretreatment levels. In patients with untreated bladder carcinoma, the levels after 48 h were statistically significantly lower than the pretreatment levels. However, these decreases disappeared after radical treatment. In patients having abnormally high pretreatment levels, the frequency of cases which decreased to more than 20% of their pretreatment levels was 47% for SLDH and 60% for SLDH-V. This test was useful not only as a diagnostic tool, but also as a means of predicting therapeutic results.

By transforming uroflowmetrograms from curves of flow rate versus time into curves of flow rate versus instantaneous bladder volume, additional information about the variation of the flow rate during voiding is obtained. These curves show that, within a certain volume range, the maximum flow rate is more or less independent of the voided volume. A second volume-independent parameter is the maximum contraction velocity, which can be calculated from the flow rate and the instantaneous bladder volume. This parameter is presumably a measure of the physiological maximum contraction velocity of the detrusor muscle.
