Unilateral nephrectomy initiates a growth response in the contralateral kidney to compensate for the loss of a renal mass. The events which regulate this process are not very clear. We used a newly developed method, 99mTc-DTPA γ-camera renography, to evaluate the individual kidney function for detection of the change of it. This method is simple, reliable and requires neither blood nor urine samples. Two groups of rabbits were used in the study. Those of 1.5–2 months of age were taken as the young aged group and those of 2 years of age as the old aged group. Kidney weight, glomerular filtration rate (GFR), and effective renal plasma flow (ERPF) were detected both before and 3 weeks after unilateral nephrectomy. After unilateral nephrectomy in both young and old age groups, the kidney weight increased by 119 and 38 %, the GFR by 71 and 44 %, and the ERPF by 116 and 35 %. We conclude that nephrectomy at a young age where there is fast growth would cause the remaining kidney a compensatory hypertrophy which is much better than that in nephrectomy at an old age. The pathologic features of 16 nephrectomy specimens obtained from patients with a radiological diagnosis of reflux nephropathy were analyzed. Chronic pyelonephritis was diagnosed in 7 cases, renal dysplasia in 5 and segmental atrophy in 4. The abdominal muscle reflex contractions in response to intraperitoneal injection of homologous sterile urine and acid, alkaline, hypo- and hyperosmolar solutions are studied in an acute spinal rat model by conventional and integrated electromyographic techniques. Intraperitoneal injection of homologous sterile urine causes a powerful and almost immediate abdominal muscle contracture of relative short duration. This response seems not to be related to urine pH or osmolarity, since only when solutions with extreme variations in these parameters are injected intraperitoneally are significant abdominal muscle contractions observed.

A new device for the simultaneous in vivo measurement of pressure and developed force in the ureter is introduced. The 5-French catheter was cystoscopically inserted into the ureters of 12 dogs under anesthesia. The forms of the peristaltic waves for pressure and force show considerable differences. A basal force analogous to the basal pressure is only rarely measurable. During the systole, the developed force describes the pure muscle contraction process. The results are dependent on the location of the probe. Our new method is able to give information about the extent to which a ureter possesses the capacity to effectively close its lumen. This function, which is so decisive in urinary transport, can be determined not only qualitatively but also quantitatively.

In order to predict the malignant potential of superficial bladder cancer, in 121 patients with this malignancy adenine nucleotide levels (adenosine triphosphate, adenosine diphosphate, and adenosine monophosphate) and energy charge in bladder cancer cells were determined. The nucleotides were analyzed according to the method of Bücher, and the energy charge was calculated by applying the formula of Atkinson. It was clearly pointed out that superficial bladder tumors, which became invasive and/or metastatic, had higher levels of adenylate compounds than those which became not. Patients with human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I)-associated myelopathy (HAM) sometimes have accompanying voiding disturbances. We performed clinical surveys and urodynamic examinations on 25 untreated patients with HAM. Although 4 cases (16%) were entirely aware of urinary symptoms, the onset of urinary symptoms preceded other pyramidal symptoms in 6 cases (24%). All cases suffered from dysuria. The cause of dysuria was thought mainly to be detrusor external sphincter dyssynergia, but in some cases an underactive detrusor and poor opening of the bladder neck at voiding were also the causes of dysuria. There was a tendency for urinary dysfunction to become worse as the primary disease progresses. Patients with HAM must be carefully followed up by urologists in order to prevent deterioration of the urinary tract.

We reviewed our 12.5-year experience with ileocecal conduit (ICC) and report the long-term results of 147 cases of ICC compared with those of our 102 cases of ileal conduit (IC). We usually performed ICC following total cystectomy for carcinoma of the bladder, while we chose IC in cases of high stage or recurrent malignancies. The average follow-up period was 41.7 months in the ICC group and 28.8 months in the IC group. The postoperative mortality (6.1%) and the incidence of early complications (21.1%) in the ICC group were comparable with the reported incidences for IC. In the later period, stomal problems were most frequently encountered. Urinary tract complications are important because they affect renal function in the course of a long period of time. Excretory urogram showed a satisfactory result and serum creatinine remained within the normal limits even in patients followed up for a long time in both groups. The incidences of pyelonephritis and urinary stones in the ICC group were 13.6 and 5.4%, respectively. We had expected a much lower incidence of these complications and ICC could not cover all the drawbacks of IC. However, at present, there is no ideal or perfect method of urinary diversion, ICC should be one of the acceptable options which has a satisfactory long-term result.

Both PC-3 and DU-145 cell lines are androgen-insensitive, but, in our experience, they contain androgen receptors (AR). Treatment of these cells with natural β-interferon at a concentration of 1,000 IU/ml of culture medium determines an increase of AR (evaluated by a whole-cell assay), statistically significant with respect to control. Androgen unresponsiveness of our cells could be due to an AR level which is lower than that present in hormone-sensitive prostatic cancer cell lines, such as LNCaP cells. For this reason, interferon-promoted AR increase merits further investigation, even if other defects in receptor mechanism, responsible for hormone insensitivity, cannot be excluded

In order to learn about the influence of dietary factors and obesity on prostatic cancer in our environment, a case-control study was performed. The group of cases consisted of 90 men histologically diagnosed with prostatic cancer in the ‘La Paz’ hospital (Madrid) during the 4-year period of 1983–1987. The controls were 180 men selected to obtain a random sample of males from the same hospital, stratified according to age and date of admission as compared with the prostatic cancer patients.
