摘要:
IN A CONSIDERATION of the safest methods of administration of general anesthesia in children, intratracheal, spinal, rectal and intravenous can be dismissed at once as being too dangerous, or at least, as not having been proved conclusively to be safe for them. All authorities seem quite agreed that the safest method of producing general anesthesia in children is by inhalation. When local anesthesia is used, the infiltration method is the only one generally recommended. R. E. Farr, of Minneapolis, reports success with local anesthesia in ninety per cent of his operations on children.

摘要:
THE IMPORTANCE of respiration to the anesthetist as a sign of the patient's condition can scarcely be overestimated. Clinical experience has shown that certain efficiency of respiration is essential to the well-being of the anesthetized patient, just as it is to the cardiac case of the internist. Unfortunately, however, too much attention has been given to therate of respiration, none to the minute-volume and but little more to the tidal volume.Perhaps the ease of counting respiration and the great strides made in other fields of medicine have retarded general interest in the more accurate observations of other phases of respiration.Neither the rate nor the volume of tidal respiration taken separately determines the efficiency of the respiratory function. Both are essential. That is. pulmonary ventilation -the minute volume -or the amount of gases inhaled per minute determines the efficiency of the patient's breathing.

摘要:
RAPID INDUCTION of anesthesia with nitrous oxid is an heritage of the past. Probably, because the gas is not unpleasant to inspire, even in 100 per cent dosage, the idea of rapid administration has persisted, in the effort of the average anesthetist to attain a maximum speed of induction. Anesthesia, as a rule, is smoother as its induction is slower. We have thought that an anesthetic agent should be administered as rapidly as the patient would tolerate it, from the beginning. Upon cursory thought, this would appear proper, but considering the physiology of anesthesia induction, the transmission of gases from the lungs to the nerve cells, we see the faults of the rapid procedure.

OF YOUR SCIENCE I have a tolerable ignorance. There is a common sentiment among us that no person possesses all wisdom. Well, failing the possession of it, the next expedient is to seem wise by keeping silent on the subject. I hope it may thus delude you.

摘要:
ON THIS, the occasion of the Second Annual Meeting of the Canadian Society of Anesthetists, I have the inestimable pleasure of addressing you, in this, our city of Winnipeg. I trust, although the natural beauty of situation cannot compare with some of the cities of the East and extreme West, that you will find something of attraction and, to some of you at least, the level country, with its long vistas extending to the distant horizon may not be found wholly without that charm and appeal which it undoubtedly possesses for many who enjoy the far-flung open spaces. Here, at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine rivers, the former with its slow, winding stream meandering between green, well-timbered banks, with the old Hudson Bay fort and trading-post as a nucleus, our city has gradually come into being and stands as the gateway to the western prairies.

摘要:
MY OBJECT in presenting this paper is to answer in detail inquiries which have been made regarding the scope and possibilities of local anesthesia in kidney surgery. I will consequently confine my discussion exclusively to the technical side. The indications for local may be briefly stated to be any condition in which the hazard of a general anesthetic is to be avoided if possible.

摘要:
CONDUCTIVE ANESTHESIA has the distinction of being one of the most important factors in the development of the present high state of perfection of our modern methods of dental practice, but there is still much to be desired, which mill be developed with our ever-increasing experience. Of the many methods and fads of modern dentistry, conductive anesthesia has held to an ever-increasing popularity especially when its use rests upon the scientific basis with which it must be employed to insure the greatest degree of success. Nearly all of the profession have had access to a knowledge of conductive anesthesia. The technic is mastered with study and experience, but there is one feature of this method of anesthesia that is a most important one in our complete success, and it is one that has many times been neglected. but often has given us serious concern,e. g., the pain following the operation, which many times may be prevented with a little more study and care in our use of this method of anesthesia, as the successful termination of local anesthesia is not only a complete anesthesia but the elimination of the after-pain to as great extent as possible.

摘要:
POST-OPERATIVE VOMITING has always been dreaded by the surgeon as well as by the anesthetist. If the patient is not nauseated after the operation, then the anesthetist is quick to take the credit for administering agood anesthetic, but if, on the other hand, persistent vomiting occurs, the surgeon, by his manipulations during the operation, was of course, undoubtedly to blame! But that time has passed when the expressions: “the patient took a good anesthetic” or “he took a poor anesthetic” can be used.
