摘要:
ABSTRACT.Thirteen of the 14 Down's syndrome children in Oxfordshire aged 2‐4 years were studied. Quantified attention deficit was recorded for four children in a standardized test situation. This deficit did not correlate with mental age or with social or medical attributes. Temperamental traits did not identify the attention disordered children as ‘difficult’. Parental ratings of behaviour revealed a preponderance of conduct‐type disorder and problems of parental control among them. There was a precise inverse relationship between a child's ability to engage and maintain attention and measured examiner activity in the test situation. The implications of this for the interactive consequences of this type of attention disorder are di

摘要:
ABSTRACT.A sample of institutionalized, mentally handicapped adults who suffered from epilepsy was compared with a matched control group without epilepsy in order to investigate profiles of adaptive skills and of behavioural disturbance. Results suggested that mentally handicapped people with epilepsy have consistently poorer life skills than their peers with no epilepsy but behavioural disturbance was not significantly elevated, except for a small sub‐group whose epilepsy was resistant to pharmacological control. These results are discussed with reference to past research and management implications are considere

摘要:
ABSTRACT.This study taught three moderately to severely mentally handicapped women skills to enable them to make use of cafeterias. While some work has been carried out in this area (e.g. Marholinet al., 1979; Van den Polet al., 1981; Desai, 1983), it has not established whether hospital‐based individuals with this level of handicap and no previous experience of cafeterias can be taught how to use them. A role‐playing procedure was used during training within vivoassessments being carried out before and after training. Anin vivogeneralization assessment was also conducted. Training was found to be successful with the skills taught transferring to the real life situation and subjects' improved performance, in the majority of the skill areas, generalizing to a ‘new’ cafeteria which had a completely different system

摘要:
ABSTRACT.Data from a study designed to elicit the criteria lay people use in judging whether speakers are mentally retarded or not retarded on the basis of speech samples were analysed to determine the factors explicitly stated to be the principal criteria. Two distinct patterns were discovered. In judging speakers as ‘mentally retarded’, a single feature of voice, speech or discourse evaluated as ‘poor’ was cited in the majority of cases. In judging speakers as ‘not retarded’, judges invoked multiple reasons in the majority of cases. Some feature of voice or speech was the most important single factor in correct identifications of mentally retard

摘要:
ABSTRACT.Plasma concentration of tryptophan, tyrosine, leucine and thiamine were reduced in senile dementia of Alzheimer type. In Down's syndrome, where Alzheimer‐type histology appears consistently at an early age, there was a definite type of abnormality, raised concentrations of isoleucine, leucine, phenylalanine and cystine. Because of the competition between amino acids for transfer into the brain, either or both of these types of change could lie in the aetiological chain underlying the development of Alzheimer pathology. Alternatively, these patterns could reflect the requirements of aberrant central/peripheral protein turnove

摘要:
ABSTRACT.The individual with Down's syndrome is characterized by apathy towards physical exercise. Ten untrained subjects with Down's syndrome and a control group have been tested at rest and after exercise on a bicycle ergometer. In subjects with Down's syndrome, the authors have observed: (a) a lower orthostatic index at rest; (b) a lower indirect maximal oxygen consumption; (c) a shorter performance time and a lower maximal workload; (d) a higher urinary catecholamines excretion; (e) a blood pressure which did not rise regularly with the workload increment. It is concluded that, in subjects with Down's syndrome, the low level of physical fitness is not only explained by lack of motivation but also by physiological impairments.
