AbstractThe clinical and pathological features of two further cases of the condition previously described as Recurring Digital Fibrous Tumour of Childhood are presented. The ultrastructural appearance of the characteristic cell inclusions bears some resemblance to Mallory's hyaline and suggest increased functional activities in the fibroblasts carrying these unusual dense bodies. Retention of abnormal metabolic products in fibroblasts is the most likely explanation. The term Inclusion Body Fibromatosis is proposed for this entity.

AbstractAn indirect immunoperoxidase method has been used to study a series of breast carcinomas for the presence of five potential biological markers (two appropriate to breast, two placental proteins and one oncofetal protein). One or more markers were detectable in 84 per cent, of tumours, two or more in 60 per cent, and three or more in 32 per cent. Similarity of staining patterns was noted for two placental proteins and for the oncofetal protein and one placental protein. Markers appropriate to breast tissue tended to be detected in separate areas. In certain instances more than one antigen could be detected within the same cell. The relationship of the number of markers present to histological differentiation was found to be complex, but carcinomas with three or more antigens demonstrated showed a tendency to be well or moderately differ entiated. Tumours with no markers often had not metastasised to lymph nodes but conversely those with four and five markers had. A striking feature throughout the study was the heterogenous secretory nature of breast carcinomas.

AbstractThe reactions to a number of histochemical stains by Michaelis‐Gutmann (MG) bodies in 13 cases of malakoplakia are described. All MG bodies contained calcium and phosphate. Iron was present in six cases. Special stains failed to reveal the presence of micro‐organisms. In six cases the MG bodies contained either lecithin or sp'hingomyelin and in three both phospholipids were present. There was no evidence of phospholipid of bacterial cell membrane derivation. Carbohydrate staining reactions suggested the presence of a neutral polysaccharide and an acidic non‐suiphaied polysaccharide (such as a sialoglycan). No histochemical evidence could be adduced to implicate bacterial cell membranes in the structure of the organic matrix of the MG body. AbstractXenogeneic antisera have been prepared against human monocytes, B lymphocytes and T lymphocytes. The reactivity of these antisera against a variety of normal and neoplastic cells is described. Reed‐Sternberg cells from three cases of Hodgkin's disease failed to react with xenogeneic anti‐T and anti‐monocyte sera, but reacted with an anti‐B serum. AbstractThe epithelioid cell granuloma in high resistant tuberculoid (TT) leprosy was contrasted with the pure macrophage granuloma of anergic lepromatous leprosy (LL) by evaluating various immunological factors operating in these lesions. The immunoperoxidase technique using antisera to immunoglobulin IgG, IgM, complement C3, C3d and C1q and other products of macrophage secretion, lysozyme, plasminogen, a1antitrypsin and C‐reactive protein and of la antigens revealed peak levels in tissues of most of these factors in both types of granuloma. The tuberculoid response was linked to low antigenic load and Ia‐like antigen and the lepromatous response was secondary to a high antigenic load in the absence of Ia antigen.Complement and other mediators were found intracellularly in both tuberculoid and lepromatous granulomas, but extracellilarly only in tuberculoid lesions. This may indicate local hypersensitivity in the tuberculoid granuloma. It is suggested that the mediators in LL macrophages remain bound to the lipids of mycobacterial degeneration in the phagocytic vacuole.Secretory cells were differently sited in the two types of granulomas: peripheral in epithelioid cell lesions and central around capillaries over the whole lesion in pure macrophage granulomas of LL. In tuberculoid leprosy many of the central vessels in the granuloma were obliterated.C1q was found in fibroblasts. AbstractSystemic treatment with disodium ethane‐hydroxy‐1, 1‐diphosphonate is ineffective in inhibiting the calcergenic reactions induced in mouse skin by the lanthanides. In contrast, disodium dichloromethylene diphosphonate prevents lanthanide calcergy induced by 12 of the 15 compounds tested but only when treatment with Cl2MDP is given prior to the subcutaneous (sc) injection of the lanthanide. This is the first experimental calcification system in which EHDP was ineffective in inhibiting the calcification and the first in which Cl2MDP was found to be effective in this regard.
