AbstractHaemorrhage into cerebral parenchymal tissue supero‐lateral to the angles of the lateral ventricles is a major cause of death and disability in preterm infants. It is frequently associated with germinal layer and intraventricular haemorrhage but the mechanism by which parenchymal haemorrhage occurs is uncertain. Recent studies have suggested that it is due to bleeding into tissue previously damaged by ischaemia following cerebral hypoperfusion. We have studied 68 preterm infant brains, of which four contained early intraparenchymal haemorrhage supero‐lateral to the angles of the lateral ventricles which were associated with large germinal layer and intraventricular haemorrhages. The anatomical distribution and histological features of these haemorrhages suggested that they resulted from venous infarction and that the venous drainage of the periventricular tissues had been obstructed by the germinal layer haemorrhages. In these four infants, bleeding into parenchymal tissues could be regarded as a complication of germinal layer and intraventricular haemorrhage rather than of cerebral hypoperfus

AbstractCervical adenocarcinomas show cytoplasmic reactivity with the monoclonal antibody HMFG1 in contrast to the luminal border (cuticular) staining seen in normal endocervical glands and microglandular hyperplasia. HMFG1 was applied to 15 cases of cervical glandular atypia: thirteen showed cytoplasmic reactivity similar to that seen in overt endocervical neoplasia. This pattern of reactivity seems to be a useful marker of cervical glandular atypia and further supports its suggested place in the development of adenocarcinoma.

AbstractThe role of macrophages in rat mesothelial healing was evaluatedin vivoandin vitro.In animals whose circulating monocytes were severely depressed, the healing rate was retarded; however, this effect was partly reversed by the introduction of macrophages into the injured site, suggesting that macrophages are of fundamental importance in the healing of mesothelial wounds. Furthermore, it was found that wound exudates stimulated DNA synthesis in normal quiescent mesothelial cells and the component principally responsible for this activity was the macrophage. Cultured macrophage‐conditioned media also induced an increase in mesothelial replication. Moreover, the mitogenic activity present in both wound exudates and macrophage‐conditioned media was increased by dialysis and diminished by heating at 80°C for 1 h. The putative mesothelial mitogenic factor in the supernatant of wound exudates and macrophage cell cultures has a molecular size greater than 7000 dalton and is stable after mild heating (60°C, 1 h). AbstractThe toxins ricin and abrin are potent inhibitors of protein synthesis. Apoptosis has been shown to be induced in some cells by cycloheximide and actinomycin D whereas the process is prevented in other cells by the same agents, both inhibitors of protein synthesis. We were interested to find whether ricin and abrin caused any apoptotic changes in rapidly dividing tissues where we believed that these toxins concentrate. Rats were injected intramuscularly with toxin and killed at time intervals, tissues being removed and examined by light and electron microscopy.Apoptotic‐like bodies were abundant in para‐aortic lymph nodes, Peyer's patches and ileal crypts of ricin or abrin intoxicated rats. Abrin was found to cause markedly more pronounced changes in these tissues, when compared with a similar dose of ricin. AbstractUsing a low temperature resin, we have developed a reliable technique for post‐embedding electron immuno‐cytochemistry which is rapid enough to be used in a routine histopathology laboratory.Glutaraldehyde fixed human tissues were dehydrated and embedded at −25°C in a new acrylic resin called LR‐Gold. Using the immunogold technique, ultra‐thin sections of the tissues were labelled with monoclonal antibodies to cytokeratin, human milk fat globule and HLA‐D region antigen; and with polyclonal antisera to lysozyme, kappa and lambda light chains and immunoglobulin M. The resin was easy to section and the preservation of fine structure was excellent. Immunolabelling procedures gave clean and consistent results, and electron micrographs of examples of this are included. It was felt that the preservation of ultrastructure and antigenicity compared well with the results of other workers using low temperature resins such as Lowicryl K4M, but LR‐Gold was superior to Lowicryl K4M because sectioning was considerably easier and the sections were more stable in the
