摘要:
The finite-element method and the discrete-block method have been used to study the defor-mational behaviour of a jointed rock mass subjected to simple shear displacement. Blocks in models with large sizes of block make contact at few points which cause large openings of joints and high stress concentrations in the blocks and surrounding joints. The introduction of more joints into the models evens out the forces, reduces the stresses and causes a gentle type of deformation. From this study, we draw the practical conclusion that joints in rock plinths are eligible for the storage of radio-active waste, if we take into account the effect of simple shear displacement from faulting.

摘要:
A new seismicity map of Sweden for the period 1951–1976 is presented. The map and the corresponding catalogue are based essentially on seismographic records made in the Nordic countries. The use of such records, in combination with improved methods of analysis, has made it possible not only to produce a more complete and more accurate seismicity map, but also to revise several earlier conclusions, based on macroseismie information only. In view of the great current interest in the seismicity of Sweden, from both the engineering and the tec-tonophysical viewpoints, a summary is given of the pertinent papers produced at the Seismological Institute, Uppsala.

摘要:
In designing structures to withstand earthquakes, the engineer is mainly concerned with relatively strong motions, in which source dimensions and non-linear effects become important. A model for the attenuation of strong, near-field motions is used to assess the parameters of Scandinavian earthquakes. It is concluded that the Scandinavian earthquakes may be attenuated more slowly and have higher maximum accelerations and higher frequencies some distance away from the source than earthquakes in western U.S.A. for the same magnitude.

This paper is presented in the nature of a review of the potential of microearthquake surveys in seismotectonic studies, particularly seismic-risk analyses. Microearthquakes are generally considered as shocks with magnitude less than 3. They radiate, in general, higher frequencies than larger earthquakes and therefore microearthquake seismographs must be sensitive to frequencies typically up to 30 or 40 Hz. Mircroearthquakes are useful in seismotectonic studies because: (1) a greater number of small than large shocks occur in the same time, (2) extension to lower magnitudes of frequency-of-occurrence curves can yield more reliable seismic-risk statistics, (3) due to the reduced scale, both in space and time, very precise focal location is possible, often enabling mapping of fracture surfaces, (4) focal-mechanism solutions can further determine the fault surface and, in addition, the direction of slip, and (S) continuous monitoring of seismic activity is possible through the means of a permanent network of microearthquake systems.
