摘要:
A recently formed gully in a terrace of the Öreälven River, northern Sweden, is an example of an erosional feature that developed in silts and sands overlying glaciofluvial scdiments. During work in a gravel pit, glaciofluvial gravel at the edge of the terrace was removed and the silt and sand on the eastern side were exposed. In connection with the spring flood in May 1983, the groundwater level rose and groundwater started to seep out, causing rapid gully erosion. In two days, about 10000 m3of silt and sand were removed by erosion and deposited as a large alluvial fan below the gully.

Gustaf Linnarsson contributed in his short life to the solution of many thorny geological problems outwith his own country. In particular, his work as a biostratigrapher on the fossils and rocks of the Lower Palaeozoic of Sweden was used by H. Alleyne Nicholson of Aberdeen and Charles Lapworth of Birmingham to help solve the problems of correlation of the Lower Palaeozoic of Wales, Northern England and Scotland. It eventually enabled Lapworth to work out the Tripartite Classification of the Lower Palaeozoic. The close connection between these three geologists was particularly fruitful in resolving and promulgating the techniques of using zonal fossils, especially graptolites. There is considerable evidence of the close international co-operation here. Of special importance was the application of Linnarsson's findings to the dating of the Cambrian-Precambrian interface in the late nineteenth century. A final point of significance is the psychological and practical effect that such work and co-operation had on Charles Lapworth, then in the early stages of his geological career.

A biostratigraphical investigation of six samples from the Sixtorp Bore-hole No. 1 in the Kristianstad area, NE Scania, southern Sweden, has been carried out. This investigation revealed the presence of a sparse, but relatively well preserved, palynological assemblage of which forty-two palynomorph species (mainly pollen grains and spores) could be determined. From the known stratigraphical ranges and distribution within the Sixtorp samples of certain palynomorphs it is possible to suggest tentatively an Albian age for the interval investigated. Two species, namelyTricolpnes albiensisKemp andRugubivesiculites reductusPierce, are known to occur in sediments not older than Middle Albian, respectively Late Albian. The results also appear to indicate that deposition of these sediments has occurred in a non-marine environment. From the colour of the palynomorphs it is possible to obtain a thermal alteration index (T.A.I.) of 3.0, a value indicating an immature hydrocarbon energy source potential. Comparison with other Lower Cretaceous ‘microfloras’ seems to provide further evidence to support the tentative Albian age suggestion.
