The geochemical properties of a small stream have been studied by repeated sampling of sediment and peat during the period May-September. The element concentrations are time-dependent in the sediments but independent of time in the peat. Detailed sampling shows that one sample represents a section of less than 2 m of the stream. The rapid changes of the element concentrations are mainly caused by changes in the local environment along the stream. The usual sampling distance of 200 m in geochemical surveys is too wide. The elements studied fall into two main groups of different geochemical properties. The elements of one group, e.g. Fe, Mn, Mo and Zn, are enriched in the stream channel by local geochemical processes. The reproducibility of the observations is improved by a normalization to either Fe or Mn. A weak Cu-Mo dissemination is indicated by Mo only after the application of such a normalization procedure. Cu is found to be the most useful element for stream-sediment surveys. The study also shows, however, that the absence of Cu anomalies in a stream does not exclude the existence of a Cu-mineralization.

A comparison of the ring widths of various Swedish trees with temperature is found to show positive correlations with coefficients at about 0.3. The yearly precipitation in Sweden seems to be sufficient for the growth of the trees, and a comparison of ring widths and precipitation shows nearly zero values of the correlation coefficient. The solar activity and temperature have been compared with observable relations. Finally, a comparison of the tree rings with solar activity shows that broad rings in general correspond to large sunspot numbers, but, at least apparently, the opposite effect has also been recorded—a warning against drawing too rapid conclusions.

The Rb—Sr age of the red, acid granites which intrude into the older, granitoid plutonics of the Åmål mega-unit is 1458 ± 28 Ma. The period around 1450 Ma thus emerges as one of considerable plutonic activity in south-western Sweden.

摘要:
The publication of geological maps by the Geological Survey of Sweden (SGU) is far too slow to be of any help in the intensive, ore exploration activities which are actually carried out by the SGU and by certain companies in various parts of the country. At the actual rate of mapping, on the scale of 1:50 000, the total coverage of the country is expected to take about 140 years. A more rapid and cheaper method of geological mapping is discussed and its advantages are analysed in relation to ore exploration.

Differential thermal analysis (DTA) of gorceixite from Buffels River, Namaqualand, South Africa, shows a strong endothermic reaction, with minima at 569 and 602°C. Thermogravimetry (TG) show a total weight loss of 14.4%, occurring in two definite steps in the ranges 450–550°C and 550–750°C. Thermo-analytical results indicate that water is present in gorceixite, not in the molecular form but as hydroxyl groups.

摘要:
This study concerns a comparison of the conventional HF method and a method using ZnCl2as a heavy liquid, combined with HF, for the concentration of pollen in minerogenic sediments. The investigation clearly shows that the ZnCl2method is as accurate as the HF method and is superior as regards both the concentration and the preservation of pollen grains.

In order to make the geological mapping of tunnels more comprehensible, it can be supplemented with stereo-photography by the method described here. This method is not new. However, it is applicable in the difficult environment of underground excavations with a sufficient degree of accuracy for normal geological work.
