The Geochronological laboratory in Stockholm has since 1966, been carrying out Rb-Sr dating on rocks from northern Sweden. The results obtained imply a general pattern for the development of the Svecofennian orogenic zone characterized by the following three periods: 1. A period of deposition from 2100? to 1900 m.y. during which supracrustal rocks of eastern, Karelian facies were formed in the northeastern part and of western, svionian facies in the southwestern part of the area. 2. A period of intrusion- and deformation between 1900 and 1775 m.y. during which the main tectonic development occurred and most granites were formed. 3. A period of deposition and intrusion from 1775 to 1540 m.y. when a widespread volcanic activity occurred in the western and southwestern part of the orogenic zone combined with the intrusion of intermediate and acid rocks, some of which may be of anatectic origin. The deformation was slight during this generally postdeformative period but in some areas the supracrustal rocks have been intensively folded during the emplacement of the intrusive rocks of this period.

This report deals with results from an investigation in the Göta River Valley on the importance of salt content on the geotechnical properties of marine clays. Salt distribution in slopes is discussed and the method to determine slip surfaces in slides by means of salt soundings. The leaching theory has been studied both in the field and in the laboratory. No relation seems to exist between the total salt content in the pore water and the sensitivity. A relation seems, however, to exist between the chemical composition of the pore water salt and the sensitivity. Leached non quick clays contain relatively more divalent ions in the pore water than the quick clays. It can be shown that calcium and magnesium are complex bound in the quick clay system by means of organic material. The Donnan condition is thus valid for a quick clay system in spite of the apparent deviation. Ageing phenomena in quick clays are discussed. These properties seem to be in opposition to the classical leaching theory. Diffusion in natural slopes can be studied from the sharp salt gradient formed in a slide and some diffusion studies are reported. The connection between diffusion and electrical conductivity is also treated. The pure diffusion in Göta River clays seems to be too small for a commercial chemical stabilization. Other possible stabilization methods are also discussed.

Two species ofCoenitesEICHWALD,C. repens(WAHLENBERG) andC. hennigin.sp. are described. The structure of the skeleton has been studied using the light microscope microscope and scanning electron micrographs. The structure of the skeleton shows that a classifiation ofCoenitesamong the tabulate corals can no longer be maintained. Instead the genus belongs to the phylum Bryozoa.Coenitesis here referred to the order Cystoporata ASTROVA. The structure of the lunarium in Cystoporata andLichenoporidac(Cyclostomata) is briefly discussed.

Die nach Oben gerichtete Pressung der Urgranitmagmen und die damit ver-bundene vulkanische Wirksamkeit hat grosse Bedeutung gehabt für die topo-graphische und geologische Entwicklung im vorliegenden Gebiet. Die Verteilung der Magmen mit einer urgranitfreien Zone westlich von der Scheidelinie der Fig. 1 hat in dieser Zone eine besondere Entwicklung bedingt.

During the Danish East Greenland expedition in 1929 the author inter alia collected Upper Devonian vertebrate remains in several localities. The bulk of the material was obtained at the northern slope of Mount Celsius on Ymerön. Among the vertebrate fossils collected there was a relatively well preserved somewhat reptilian looking skull with acuminated teeth. The author designed it to be very likely the skull of a primitive stegocephalian. After the return of the expedition to Copenhagen the expdition leader Lauge Koch reported inter alia on the discovery of the Devonian “toad”. In 1931 E. Stensiö published a monograph of the Upper Devonian fish fossils collected during the expedition. The same year G. Säve—Söderbergh accompanied by three fossil hunters took part in a Danish expedition to East Greenland. During the greater part of the field season they looked for stegophalian skulls on the northern slope of the above-named Mount Celsius. In 1932 Säve—Söderbergh published a report on the most interesting specimens of the collected stegocephalian skulls. E. Jarvik's mentioning of the present author's vertebrate finds in 1929 and his statement in an earlier paper on Devonian vertebrates: “Hitherto Ichthyostegalians have been found only in the Remigolepis series of East Greenland. The first finding were made by O. Kulling in 1929 in Mount Celsius”, put the idea in the writer's head to publish a figure of his old finding, the skull with acuminated teeth, together with some comments. However, the whereabouts of the very skull could not at present. be located in the vertebrate collections at the Natural History museums in Stockholm and Copenhagen.

It is shown that the belemnites collected by De Geer (1919) in the Båstad area, determined by him asActinocamax verusMiller and asActinocamax plenus(Blainville) by Stolley (1932), might be referred toActinocamax primusArkhangelsk). This may provide evidence for the simultaneous middle or upper Cenomanian transgression in the Båstad and Kristianstad areas.
