No satisfactory genetic interpretation of rhythmic marl-limestone sequences has yet been published. Previous studies of the problem have relied mainly on sedimentological data, and, as far as the author is aware, there has been no investigation of the faunal assemblages contained in such sequences. In this present paper an attempt is made to combine sedimentological and palaeoecological data. The case treated is theOoser Plattenkalk(Upper Devonian I of the Eifel area, Rheinisches Schiefergebirge; see Fig. 1). This facies unit consists of a rhythmic sequence of calcareous shales and argillaceous limestones with distinct carbonate-clay ratios.

Vertebrates older than any previously known from Scandinavia were recently found in the Halla Beds, the penultimate stratigraphical unit within the Wenlockian according to Hede (1942). The fauna, containing thelodonts, anaspids, and an osteostracan species, shows affinities to that in the Kaarma Beds of the Isle of Ösel (Saaremaa). This fauna is associated with a well preserved fauna of ostracodes of which the beyrichiaceans are described herein. They comprise one treposelline,Prisculella garnielloides, n.g., n.sp., and three beyrichiines,Beyrichiasp. (only tecnomorphs known),Beyrichia (Beyrichia) subornataMartinsson, andCalcaribeyrichia duplicicuspidatan.sp. The latter species is the earliest representative of a large, mainly Ludlovian group of species, and the entire fauna shows a more advanced aspect than that in the Mulde Beds which, according to current correlations, have been regarded as younger than the Halla Beds.

Hydrology of the Edsen Gol Oasis in the Gobi Desert. The Edsen Gol delta region or theKüyenterritory of the Han Annals was occupied by the Chinese 121 B.C. In 102 B.C. the emperor Wu-ti gave orders for the construction of a fortified barrier around the vast new settlement south of the terminal lakes. Administrative centre was the town ofKüyen(16), probably located west or the lake or swamp of Küyen Hai, now desiccated. The region experienced a new era of greatness during the Middle Ages. As in the Han period, the settlements and areas of cultivation were located to the eastern side of the lower parts of the Edsen Gol; administrative centre was this time the town of Etsina or Khara Khoto, visited by Marco Polo in 1271 A.D. In 1372 the region was devasted by warfare and the town, but for its mighty walls, was razed to the ground. At the end of the century the oasis had become practically depopulated. The irrigation system decayed. The soil became dissected by the atmospheriles into a maze of furrows and mounds and was more or less extensively invaded by sand dunes.

The finds of kimberlite dikes and veins which tend to strike towards a centre, and the finds of angular breccia boulders in the same area suggest a new centre of volcanic activity within the Åvike Bay region, situated approximately 15 kilometres east of the wellknown Alnö district in Sweden. The volcanism of the two areas are probably related to each other. However, the rocks of Åvike seem to be more kimberlitic in character and appear to be younger than those of the Alnö region.

Ten peat-bogs in Central Sweden have been examined for horizons with volcanic ash. The horizons found have been dated with pollen and Carbon 14, and the results have been compared with the Icelandic acid ash-layers from Hekla and Askja. (See summary in English on p. 393.)

Frost phenomena occur in thin layers of weathered material covering the Ordovician and Silurian sedimentary rocks om the islands of Öland and Gotland in the Baltic. Stone pits, sorted nets, and earth hummocks from flat areas of the islands have been described earlier (Hesselman 1908 and 1915, Sterner 1926, and Rydquist 1960).

Spectrographical tests on a number of sulphide ore samples, chiefly from Central Sweden, have shown that small quantities of tin are fairly common in ores of this kind, but exceptionally higher values have been found.
