摘要:
ABSTRACTIndustrial restructuring is a necessary element in the process of capital accumulation. Restructuring denotes decisive qualitative changes rather than just quantitative changes in the organization of production. In this paper the recent (broadly post‐1974) restructuring of the West European steel industry is examined via consideration of the interplay between processes of change conceptualized as occurring at two levels of analysis: sectoral change on the one hand and the strategies of capital, labour and states on the othe

摘要:
ABSTRACTThis article situates the housing experiences of marginalized urban groups within the social, economic and ideological shifts that have recently occurred in Western cities. Within this theoretical context, the residential mobility experiences of two samples of respondents who represent groups marginalized within the New Zealand housing market are examined: the seriously mentally ill (n = 203) and households in serious housing need (n = 279). Data from these groups are compared to a sample drawn from the general population (n = 100). Results from a two‐city longitudinal design indicate that for the two research samples, moving house, which is commonly regarded as a stressful experience, actually contributed to improved mental health. For many, however, moving was not an option despite a high level of dissatisfaction and strong desire to move. While public housing policy in New Zealand remains benign compared to some western nations, recent policy shifts such as the raising of public housing rentals are of concern in light of these finding

摘要:
ABSTRACTCastilianization of Catalonia is often thought to be most intensive in the most accessible and central areas. With the help of Geographical Information Systems and characteristics of the road and railway networks, centrality scores for urban municipalities and municipalities near the city of Barcelona have been calculated. The analysis of language characteristics does not show any significant relationship of accessibility on the one hand and the distribution of language characteristics on the other. Instead, Catalonia's linguistic geography is strongly linked with massive in‐migration of Castilian‐speaking minorities. This conclusion may even be valid in a retrospective se

摘要:
ABSTRACTMuch geographical writing on the subject of rail transport and development has focused on railway expansion in the colonial era. Comparatively little attention has been given to the role of rail transport in the Third World in the post‐colonial era. Following recent World Bank‐financed efforts to rehabilitate the railways of many developing countries, this article attempts to provide some fresh analytical insights into rail transport investment in countries whose economies are becoming ever more dependent on international economic institutions. Moroccan Railways (ONCF) are considered as a specific case study. With reference to the structural adjustment programmes of the World Bank and IMF, this article seeks theoretical explanations for the substantial investment that occurred in Moroccan railways during the 1980s. The study shows that state investment in railways, while critical to Morocco's economic growth, has resulted in insufficient resources for social equity issues like health, housing and liter

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe freight transportation sector has received relatively little attention in recent debates over the nature of the transformations currently affecting contemporary capitalism. This lack of interest is particularly surprising given the fact that certain emergent forms of productive organization appear to be heavily dependent on increasingly flexible and efficient transport services. Within the context of these theoretical debates we review how the two dominant players in the Canadian rail freight sector, Canadian Pacific and Canadian National, are responding to the evolving competitive conditions of the 1990s. Deregulation, recessionary pressures, and changing customer expectations are just some of the factors that are creating an intensifying competitive environment. We then outline the responses adopted by the two companies in their attempts to improve the responsiveness and efficiency of their operations. The concluding sections of the article focus on some of the broader spatial and theoretical implications of the findings. We show that while this sector has undergone considerable change in recent years current ‘post‐Fordist’ theories of industrial restructuring can provide, at best, only a partial explanation of the processes obs
