摘要:
To assess the clinical applicability of pulse oximetry in the intensive care setting, a comparison was made of arterial hemoglobin saturation values determined by in vitro oximetry (SaO2) and pulse oximetry (SpO2) in 21 critically ill dogs. Single SaO2measurements were compared to simultaneously obtained SpO2readings. The correlation between these two methods was statistically significant (r = 0.8944, p = 0.0001). In addition, heart rates read by the pulse oximeter were compared to simultaneously obtained electrocardiograms (ECG). The correlation between these two methods was statistically significant (r = 0.9966, p = 0.0001). The pulse oximeter was easy to use, and recorded trends in oxygenation virtually instantaneously. Pulse oximetry appears to be an accurate and practical technique for the continuous non‐invasive monitoring of oxygenation in critically ill dogs in the intensive care uni

摘要:
Dogs and cats receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) were evaluated for factors leading to cardiac arrest and for survival following the procedure. One‐hundred‐thirty‐five canine and forty‐three feline patients seen at the University of California, Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital that received CPR between August 1987 and December 1991 were studied. Initial resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful in 72% of dogs and 58% of cats. Five dogs and one cat were still alive 3 days after CPR. Ultimately only four dogs and one cat were discharged from the hospital alive. These five patients with uniquely longer survival all had cardiac arrests associated with drug and/or anesthetic re

摘要:
Two cats with bradycardia and syncope were treated by permanent pacemaker implantation. Cat 1 had multiple episodes of syncope intermittently over a 10‐month period and then multiple episodes within 24 hours; cat 2 had episodes of collapse over a 3‐month period. Clinical signs included disorientation, vocalization, and collapse. High‐grade second‐degree AV block was recorded in both cats, with left and right bundle branch block in cat 1 and right bundle branch block in cat 2. Neither responded to pharmacologic therapy. In cat 1, an epimyocardial electrode was implanted into the left ventricular apex by a ventral abdominal transdiaphragmatic surgical approach. Cat 2 had a permanent smooth endocardial pacing lead introduced into the fight external jugular vein and directed into the right ventricular apex. Both cats were clinically normal within three days after implantation. Complications in cat 2 included failure of pacemaker capture, endocardial lead dislodgement, and pulse generator pocket seroma. Cats with symptomatic bradycardia caused by second‐degree and third‐degree AV block can be effectively treated by pacemaker implantation by surgical endomyocardial or perivenous endocardial lea

摘要:
One hundred acutely traumatized dogs were evaluated for the presence of cardiopulmonary abnormalities with thoracic radiographs, electrocardiography and arterial blood gas analysis. Fifty‐seven dogs were found to have concurrent appendicular fracture(s) and thoracic injury as defined by an abnormality in one or more of the variables evaluated. Thoracic radiographs were abnormal in 44 dogs. Ventricular arrhythmias were identified in 17 dogs. Hypoxemia (PaO2<80 mmHg) was detected in 25 dogs. Hypoxemia was noted with increased frequency in dogs with abnormal thoracic radiographs. Ventricular arrhythmias occurred more frequently in the hypoxemic group of dogs.Although a relationship was noted between the presence of hypoxemia, radiographic changes of the thorax and ECG abnormalities, all three examinations provided important information for assessing the cardiopulmonary status of each patien

摘要:
Arterial and venous blood gas profiles were obtained from 33 clinically normal adult dogs of two breeds (German Shepherd Dog and English Pointer) 4 and 24 hours after eating. Fresh drinking water was available. All dogs were fed a nutritionally complete and balanced dry diet. Blood gas parameters measured included pH, pCO2, pO2, bicarbonate, base excess, total carbon dioxide, oxygen content, and oxygen saturation.Statistically significant differences (P<0.01) were found between sampling intervals (4 and 24 hours postprandial) for pCO2, bicarbonate, total carbon dioxide, and base excess, for arterial and venous blood samples.Statistically significant differences (P0.05) were found between sample type (arterial or venous) and sampling interval.Correlations between arterial and venous samples were generally (but not exclusively) higher than correlations between sampling intervals. Breed differences were also noted.
