摘要:
Small and medium‐sized enterprises (SEM s) have played an important role in many countries’industrial development. Among these countries, Taiwan is well known for the outstanding performance of its SME s. Limited knowledge about the causes of such performance has been revealed gradually. The main purpose of this study is to explore the determinants of SME s’market shares in Taiwan's manufacturing sector. According to economics literature, economies of scale determine the market share of SME s. The usual explanation given is that economies of scale create barriers against SME s entering the market and competing efficiently with larger firms. It is also said that the strong entrepreneurial drive to have a self‐owned business is a crucial explanation for the creation of new businesses, usually as offshoots from a small one. Finally, such factors such as an even‐handed policy scheme, the availability of technology in relation to R&D, transaction costs, and so forth, are also important for creating a favourable environment for SME s.Applying cross‐industry pooling data from 1976 to 1986, the market shares of SME s in Taiwan's manufacturing sector were found to be affected by the following factors: (1) SME s’performance related to labour productivity and their willingness to set up new enterprises; (2) institutional factors including low entry barriers, suitable technology, the adoption of a subcontract system, and prosperous export markets. The empirical findings are compared with those from studies of the U

摘要:
This paper analyses and compares trends and patterns in Singapore's bilateral merchandise trade relations with its two largest trading partners, Japan and the United States (US). Over the period 1976–1992, the analyses reveal that both Japan and the US have been relatively over‐represented as Singapore's trade partners. However, whereas Singapore's trade with Japan has become more intensive in recent years, that with the US has become less so. Computations reveal that thedegreeas well aslevelof Singapore's intra‐industry trade with the US has exceeded that with Japan. Nevertheless, while the degree of Singapore's intra‐industry trade with Japan has been consistently increasing since 1981, bilateral trade with the US since 1987 has become increasingly inter‐ rather than intra‐industry. The important nexus between trade and FDI is also

摘要:
This paper demonstrates that the effects of the exogenous shocks experienced by the Philippine economy have been permanent rather than transitory. The finding emerges from the application of the Augmented Dickey‐Fuller (ADF) model and the segmented trend model which confirm the presence of unit roots in several Philippine macroeconomic time series variables. Moreover, the use of the segmented trend model focuses some insights regarding the influence of the government's stabilization policies on the macroeconomic variables under investigatio

摘要:
This paper repeats Thornton's (1993) test of the rational expectations‐permanent income hypothesis (REPIH) for Singapore using an alternative data set based upon real disposable income and real consumer expenditure. In contrast to Thornton, but in line with most other studies, we find anticipated income to be significant and interpret this as evidence against the REPI

摘要:
This paper analyses the population change and urbanization process in post‐war Japan. We trace the process of population concentration into urban areas, in parallel with economic development after the war. The concentration of population into urban areas can be characterized by three major metropolitan regions: Tokyo, Keihanshin (Kyoto‐Osaka‐Kobe) and Nagoya. We also show that the urbanization process of Japan in the period from 1965 to 1985 can be characterized by two spatial phenomena; firstly, the suburbanization of the existing metropolitan areas and, secondly, the spatial dispersal of urbanized
