AbstractThe object of this investigation is (I) to discover the relationship between t h e rainfall of China for the rainy season and world weather; and (2) to find some regression formula 3 for foreshadowing China rainfall of the rainy season. Walker's shorter method has been used for the calculation of the correlation coefficients and his criteria have been applied for testing t h e reliability of the coefficients. Four fairly homogeneous regions have been chosen and the rainfall of each region is correlated with the pressure, temperature, and rainfall of different seasons of various important stations of the world. It is found that increased circulation of the Southern Oscillation is generally connected with the heavy rainfall of the rainy season in China. The total correlation coefficients obtained from the equations for the North China Coast, Yangtze Deita, Yangtze Valley and S.E. China Coast are respectively .78, .62, .68 and .68.In presenting the paper, Sir Gilbert Walker remarked that, like India before Government had developed relief organisations on a vast scale, China suffered from time to time appalling catastrophes; and that, unlike India, the effect of the floods due to excessive rain was about as disastrous as the famines due to drought. Mr. Chang‐Wang Tu had made a careful preliminary analysis of the problem of foreshadowing big departures from the normal, and had tried to minimise the risk of error by rejecting factors which seemed unlikely or were based on short series of data. Nevertheless, the factors were mainly chosen for their size, and the closeness of the relationships was on that account probably overestimated. Accordingly the total correlation coefficients might prove to be nearer .6 than .68 or .78; and it would be well not to base anticipations on them unless the abnormal conditions were very strongly marke
