ABSTRACT:This evaluation addressed long‐term implementation of theTeenage Health Teaching Modules(THTM) by trained teachers in Indiana. Structured random sample telephone interviews and cross‐sectional written surveys determined the extent to which teachers implemented THTM and factors related to its implementation. Although most schools and teachers continued to use THTM, many teachers failed to maintain implementation fidelity. Barriers to THTM implementation included insufficient time for health instruction, reassignment of THTM teachers to other instructional areas, and the need for revised middle school modules. ANOVA and Mann‐Whitney U tests revealed more favorable THTM perceptions and implementation practices among teachers without implementation difficulties and among teachers who intended to attend a reconvening workshop. ABSTRACT:This paper describes the Adolescent Health Service (AHS) and its multidisciplinary, school‐linked, community‐based adolescent health clinic located in a western neighborhood of Jerusalem. Files of the first 134 adolescents who completed or discontinued treatment in the clinic during the first two years of operation were reviewed for demographic data, referral source, number of visits, health concerns and clinical impressions. The clinic population included Jewish Jerusalem residents, ages 12–18, 75% of whom were female. Most referrals came from schools. The average number of visits per patient was five (range 1–20). The most frequent presenting concerns as well as the most frequent clinical impressions were in the psychosocial and nutritional domains. Concordance between presenting concern and clinical impression was 61% (k = 0.47). Health problems of Israeli high school students attending the clinic mainly were psychosocial and nutritional. ABSTRACT:A review of school‐based drug abuse prevention programs was conducted for 1989–1994. In addition to a comprehensive literature review, interviews were conducted with a panel of 15 leading experts in prevention research. Key elements of promising prevention curricula were identified. Effective prevention programs were found to be based on a sound theoretical or research foundation. They included developmentally appropriate information about drugs, social resistance skills training, and normative education. Broader based personal and social skills training appeared to enhance program effects. Effective programs used interactive teaching techniques and teacher training, and provided adequate coverage and sufficient follow‐up. Cultural sensitivity to the target population was found to be critical to program success. Additional program components were expected to enhance curriculum effectiveness. Finally, experts agreed that adequate evaluation of prevention curricula was critical. Unfortunately, despite information about the types of curricula that are effective, the most promising prevention curricula are not widely disseminated. ABSTRACT:Many U.S. schools are implementing curricula and other activities to reduce interpersonal violence among students. Most involve conflict resolution or peer mediation (CR/PM) training. Little is known about the effectiveness or manner of implementing these projects. This paper examines nine projects supported by four state health departments. Available data suggest some projects may modify youths' self‐reported attitudes about violent behavior, improve school discipline, and reduce absenteeism. The review also revealed considerable variation in implementation, especially in the role of professionally trained consultants and amount of teacher and student training. More attention should be paid to evaluating CR/PM projects. Some data suggest they may contribute positively to community efforts to reduce violence among youth, but insufficient information exists to know which projects best serve which students, and how projects should be implemented. Until consensus emerges, project personnel should carefully assess the implementation and impact of their activities. ABSTRACT:This study obtained input from Australian student smokers approximately 15 years old, which may be useful in designing school‐based smoking cessation programs. The sample was analyzed by previous quitting experience and intentions to quit. The order of preference for assistance options and incentives for quitting was similar across all groups: however, those who previously attempted to quit (previous quitters) and those who intended to quit (intenders) in the future were significantly more likely than non‐quitters and non‐intenders to find assistance options for quitting acceptable. The potential for saving money emerged as an important variable in convincing all groups of smokers not to smoke, and using personal willpower and cutting down slowly were identified as important in actual attempts to quit.
