摘要:
ABSTRACTSuperintendents, principals and family life education teachers in all California school districts having a ninth and/or 10th grade were surveyed about their family life education (FLE) efforts. Responses were obtained from 80% of the superintendents, 45% of the principals and 39% of the FLE teachers who were sent questionnaires. While most superintendents reported the existence of an FLE program in at least one district school, the surveys revealed that less than one‐fourth of ninth graders and less than one‐third of 10th graders received such instruction during the 1981–1982 academic year. District decisions to offer FLE were reported to be most strongly influenced by school faculty and administrators while the decision not to offer FLE was most strongly influenced by clergy and special interest groups. More than half of the FLE teachers who returned surveys taught FLE as a unit within another course. Teachers generally covered a variety of curriculum topics, with units/courses most likely to address human development, physiology and sexual disease and least likely to deal with value‐laden topics such as premarital intercourse, sexual behavior and sexual preference. However, the greater number of class hours devoted to FLE, the greater the chance that these issues were covered in the curriculum. Finally, the data reveal that evaluation of FLE courses was relatively limited in scope and was largely subjective in many

摘要:
ABSTRACTSchool health education has an important role to play in discouraging teenage smoking. However, it is likely that government, the general public and students themselves will be less favorable toward smoking education in major tobacco‐producing states. To determine whether students whose families are involved in tobacco production hold more favorable attitudes toward smoking and smoke more than children whose families are not involved, 1,322 Kentucky public school students in grades five‐12 were surveyed regarding smoking attitudes and behavior. Twenty‐one percent (276) of the students reported that their families were involved in tobacco producion.Tobacco family students held more favorable attitudes toward smoking and a larger percentage of these children smoked and smoked more than their nontobacco family peers. These differences were statistically significant at the 0.05 level.Tobacco family children appear to be at high risk for smoking‐related disease and may prove resistant to some antismoking messages. Developing effective smoking education programs in major tobacco states is an important challenge for school health ed

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe Chicago Heart Health Curriculum Program (CHHCP) is a comprehensive cardiovascular disease risk‐reduction program specially designed for a multiracial population of sixth‐grade students and their families. It was implemented in a large urban school system with Asian, black, Hispanic and white students. Pretest, posttest and follow‐up data were collected. The purposes of this study were to compare the differential involvement of the four race/ethnic groups in the family intervention and to evaluate the program's immediate and long‐term impact on students' nutrition knowledge, attitude and behaviors. Results indicated it was possible to conduct a family intervention with an educationally and racially diverse urban population. The patterns of family involvement and student outcomes varied for the different groups. Reading was significantly related to nutrition knowledge and attitude but not to behavior. Reinforcement appears to be necessary for students to maintain changes ov

摘要:
ABSTRACTTo provide educators with information regarding students' behaviors and beliefs about drinking, drug use and driving, the authors surveyed a stratified random sample of approximately 2,000 seventh and 10th graders in the Boston area in the spring of 1982. The focus of the present paper is on those students who might be most at risk for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or marijuana. Therefore, the analysis presented here is limited to 623 students who were 16 years of age or older at the time of the survey.About half of the students in this age group used alcohol (63%) or marijuana (44%) and as many as 18% had used other illicit drugs during the 1982 school year. While most current drinkers (72%) drank not more than three times a month, nearly half (46%) of the current marijuana users smoked at least once a week.A substantial proportion of students combined drug and/or alcohol use with driving. Between 43% and 50% had been a passenger with a driver who was under the influence of alcohol or marijuana at least once since the beginning of the school year. Many students did not appear to be aware of the dangers involved in driving under the influence of alcohol or marijuana and about one out of four believed they could use alcohol and other drugs responsibly. Both students' behaviors and beliefs regarding drinking, drug use and driving were significantly related to the extent of their involvement with alcohol and other drugs. Frequent marijuana users, heavier drinkers and students who used drugs other than alcohol or marijuana were more likely than other students to combine drug use and driving and believe that these activities could be combined safely. The data suggest that the entire constellation of risk‐taking and drug‐using behaviors should be addressed in educational programs and that information on the effects of other drugs (both alone and in combination with alcohol) on driving ability should be emphasi
