ABSTRACTThe purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between various factors and the health knowledge and health behavior of disadvantaged black youth. Disadvantaged black male and female youths, age 12 to 17, were surveyed regarding their health knowledge, health locus of control, and health practices. Results of the data analyses using an ANOVA revealed significant differences for scores on the health knowledge test due to sex, age, and health locus of control. Females had higher test means than males, older students had higher knowledge scores than did younger students, and internally‐oriented students had higher knowledge scores than did externally‐oriented students. No significant interaction was found. An ANOVA on behavior scores revealed a sex by locus of control interaction. Male externals had much lower behavior scores than female externals. A significant interaction also was found between age and health locus of control. Older externals had significantly higher behavior scores than younger externals. ABSTRACTStudents with severe handicaps are acquiring safety behaviors through the implementation of systematic instruction. Absent from this instruction is the inclusion of generalization strategies. Included in this article is a procedure for selecting representative teaching examples to promote optimal generalization. This procedure is referred to as general case programming. The steps of this strategy are delineated using an example of applying an adhesive bandage to a cut.

ABSTRACTThis study was part of a more extensive project begun in 1981 to update the “Student Self‐Appraisal Inventory of Interests and Estimated Knowledge in Major Health Education Areas.” Items included in this study were obtained from the original health interest inventory, from a review of health education literature published between 1976–1981 in health education texts and in theJournal of School HealthandHealth Education, and from comments received from a panel of 16 health education specialists. ABSTRACTThirty‐two high school and college sexuality educators participated in a study designed to operationalize the concept ofsexuality comfort. Research questions asked were: “What is the nature of sexuality comfort?” and “Can the concept, of sexuality comfort be defined operationally?” An interview guide developed with input from an expert panel of health/sexuality educators and semanticists facilitated data collection. Data were categorized and tabulated through a systematic process. This coding process, performed by independent coders, yielded 97.2% reliability. Based on the results, an operational definition of sexuality comfort was delineated. ABSTRACTThe main purpose of the study was to examine societal norms toward exercise as perceived by school children. To this end, the normative beliefs of specific referents (parents, teachers, and friends) and the motivation to comply with the beliefs of these specific referents were measured in 698 students of both sexes attending grades seven‐nine. Results indicated major changes in both normative beliefs and motivation to comply with “significant others” as the children move from grade seven to nine. There also were substantial differences between the results for active and sedentary children. ABSTRACTEducators often find themselves confronted with the need to address health‐related problems of chronically impaired students. Specific needs often are demonstrated by chronically impaired individuals. The roles and responsibilities of the classroom teacher with respect to meeting these needs are discussed. In addition, suggestions about how these concerns can be addressed through existing classroom health instruction are offered. Teachers can use the health curriculum to compliment the efforts of parents and health‐care providers in informing, supplementing, and reinforcing disabled students' knowledge, attitudes, and skills.
