摘要:
ABSTRACTThe objective of the study was to determine the effect of nutrition instruction, using the curriculum guides,Nutrition In A Changing World, A Curriculum for Junior High Health, andA Curriculum for Senior High Health, on improving the nutrition knowledge, selected food/nutrition attitudes, and dietary behavior of students enrolled in secondary level health courses. Three groups of students were utilized including one experimental and two control groups at each level (junior high and senior high). The experimental group was pretested, taught the nutrition curriculum, and posttested. One control group was posttested only to measure the effect of the pretest on posttest performance. A second control group was pretested and posttested. Neither control group received nutrition instruction until after the study was completed. The three instruments used to collect data were a nutrition knowledge test, a food/nutrition attitude instrument, and a food frequency form. The results indicate that, at all grade levels, the experimental group had significantly improved knowledge scores. Little change in attitude scale scores was noted in grades seven and eight, while ninth grade experimental students scored significantly higher on the posttest for all attitude scales. Little improvement was seen in the posttest food frequency scores.

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe stress associated with a child's illness may result in a variety of maladaptive reactions. The family is in a position to support or sabotage the best efforts of the health care professional. The school nurse as part of a team including counselors, teachers, and administrators can assist the family in following treatment directives and in gaining control over stress‐related behavioral problems. Criteria to enable discrimination between functional and dysfunctional families and brief interventions for use with functional families are describe

摘要:
ABSTRACTThere has been an increasing public interest in health care issues such as wellness, self‐care, and the importance of taking personal responsibility for one's health. In addition to learning preventive health lifestyle measures, this growing consumer interest involves decisions regarding the purchase and use of health products and health services. There is a significant need for effective consumer health education in the schools that focuses not only on transmission of information, but on the development of decision‐making skills and on opportunities for practical application. This paper describes an approach to facilitate the development of a self‐care practicum experience in consumer health instruction, making use of the resources and expertise of both the school health educator and the school nurse. The approach describes how a planned practicum can move consumer instruction from an information‐receiving experience to a participatory experience that facilitates the development of consumer decision‐maki

ABSTRACTThe potential effectiveness of microcomputer‐assisted instruction is based on the availability of quality instructional programs. The following article outlines important characteristics of high quality instructional software. If health educators are discriminating consumers of instructional software they will serve as a significant market force promoting the development of high quality educational program

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the three most popular comprehensive health education programs in Michigan including each program's curricular content, student outcomes, and cost effectiveness. The three programs were cross‐referenced with theMichigan Essential Performance Objectives for Health(MEPO). Student outcome data were gathered and analyzed utilizing a health education instrument derived from the Michigan Educational Assessment Program. Instruments were administered to 377 third‐graders and 595 sixth‐graders participating in the three health programs. While each of the three programs met theMichigan Essential Performance Objectives for Health, the programs differed in areas of teacher training time, materials cost, and length of time for implementation. Third graders showed some very positive effects from health instruction based upon a comparison of their composite scores and scores for 10 health topic areas. Sixth graders showed some gains in several health topic areas, but few significant gains in composite s

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe Elementary School Health Education Survey was conducted to determine the health knowledge, health practices, and awareness of the consequences of health behavior of selected elementary school students in West Virginia. An 80‐item, multiple‐choice inventory was developed to collect student data, and a questionnaire‐checklist was employed for each classroom teacher whose students participated in the survey. The survey involved 1,441 students from 85 classrooms in 35 schools. The results indicated a need for mandated health instruction as part of the elementary school curriculum and a need for graduate course work in Health Education for elementary school tea

摘要:
ABSTRACTThis paper presents findings of an experimental study to test the effects of health counseling with seventh and eighth grade students (N = 32). Goal attainment scaling was used to monitor changes in health behavior during a 10‐week period with each student meeting with a health counselor five times during the study. A pretest/posttest, repeated measures design with experimental and control groups was used to evaluate the influence of health counseling. The results revealed a significant increase in goal attainment scaling scores (F = 4.96). Health behaviors influenced were exercise and nutrition. There also was a significant increase in self‐esteem (F = 8.42) and home‐esteem (F = 4.24). The utilization of health counseling appears to be an attractive educational strategy to enhance the effectiveness of classroom instru

摘要:
ABSTRACTWith more than two million handicapped children being “mainslreamed” into the regular classroom, teachers are confronted for the first time with assisting visual‐ and hearing‐impaired children. Sensory‐impaired children usually will demonstrate a deficiency in psychosocial‐sexual adjustment, and teachers may doubt their ability to help in this area. These children have the same emotional and social needs as others, and their maladjustment is due usually to a lack of sufficient information concerning their sexuality. With a better understanding and an early recognition of the impediments these individuals experience in acquiring sexuality information, teachers can modify their methods of presentation and provide opportunities and assistance in the child's psychosocial‐sexu
