ABSTRACT:Despite sharing both a common heritage and a common language, differences exist between life in the United States and the United Kingdom. During spring 1988, the author, who formerly served as editor for theHealth Visitor, published by the Health Visitor's Association, completed a six‐week study tour of school health services in the United States. In this article, she gives her impressions from the experience, including observations regarding salary, working conditions, professional preparation, and professional recognition. ABSTRACT:Schools are attempting to reduce substance abuse by implementing policies related to use of alcohol and other drugs in school settings. A review of current trends in adolescent substance use, together with research concerning effectiveness of alcohol and drug education and the impact of legal deterrence, indicate that: 1) neither educational nor school policy strategies by themselves are likely to effectively prevent use and abuse; 2) to be effective, education and policies must acknowledge and incorporate clear statements of community norms about alcohol and drug use; 3) to be effective, educational and policy strategies must complement and reinforce each other; and 4) education and policies must acknowledge and reinforce the positive behavior of the large number of students who do not use or abuse alcohol and other drugs.

ABSTRACT:The relationship between self‐esteem and the use and expected use of legal and illegal drugs was examined. Students in grades four‐nine (n = 2,032) representing 16 schools from Arkansas completed an anonymous questionnaire concerning self‐esteem and drug use. Results indicated statistically significant differences both for home self‐esteem and school self‐esteem on 18 or 19 measures of use and expected use. Results for peer self‐esteem showed no differences for any of 19 measures. Results suggest including area specific self‐esteem enhancement as a potentially important part of comprehensive drug education programs. ABSTRACT:An elementary school social skills/peer pressure resistance curriculum for the prevention of alcohol misuse was developed, implemented, and evaluated. Schools were randomly assigned to curriculum and control groups, with half of each group pretested prior to intervention and all students posttested two months, 14 months, and 26 months following intervention. Students in grade five at the beginning of the study were randomly assigned to treatment, treatment plus booster, and control conditions. Students in grade six were randomly assigned to treatment and control conditions. Three way repeated measures analyses of covariance (treatment condition by type of prior drinking experience by occasion) were conducted for each grade level on indices of “frequency/quantity of alcohol use” and “total alcohol misuse.” Results indicated the intervention was effective in reducing the rate of increase of alcohol use and misuse among grade six students who entered the study with prior unsupervised as well as supervised alcohol use.
