摘要:
ABSTRACT:The role public elementary schools have in educating children about hearing and hearing conservation is underscored by the high incidence of hearing loss in society and by the deleterious effect on communication and learning that hearing impairment causes in children. A survey to assess the extent and estimated effectiveness of the education regarding hearing and hearing conservation provided to children was conducted. One hundred sixty regular elementary school teachers returned a questionnaire, and their responses revealed that hearing and hearing conservation concepts were being taught in most classrooms. However, their responses questioned the effectiveness of the methods and materials used to teach these concepts. The findings of the survey suggest three ways to improve teaching in this area: provide in‐depth instruction about the causes of hearing impairment; use more hands‐on activities; and provide teachers with more resources to supplement instruct

摘要:
ABSTRACT:A scale was developed to measure college students' attitudes toward cancer and cancer prevention. The three components of attitude are Feeling (affective). Belief (cognitive), and Intention to Act (conative). Following pilot testing and preliminary scale construction, the final scale was administered to a representative sample of 1,040 college students at five major U.S. universities. The data were analyzed by univariate and multivariate statistical techniques to evaluate scale performance and validity. Findings indicated that both internal and external criteria were met at statistically significant levels. Results of item analysis and discriminant function analysis demonstrated the discriminating power of the scale. Reliability coefficients of the scale and the three subscales (components) were established. Coefficients of reliability for the total scale was .94 (Cronbach's alpha). The three subscales ranged from .78 to .93. The scale was found to be valid and reliable for use in the study of college students' attitudes toward cancer and cancer prevention.

摘要:
ABSTRACT:Identifying the prevalence and patterns of smokeless tobacco use among students at a midwestern university was the purpose of this study. Since smokeless tobacco sales have increased 52% since 1978, and since a youth market has developed, identifying why and when young people use these products can assist health educators in developing strategies to discourage initiation and promote cessation. A 25–item questionnaire completed by 676 undergraduate students indicated that 14% of males and 0.5% of females were regular snuff dippers or tobacco chewers. More than one‐third of the users began use at or before age 16. The influence of a “friend” was the major reason cited for initiating use, while “fun/relaxation” was cited as the principal reason for continuing. Fewer than one‐third of users successfully identified the health risks associated with snuff and ch

摘要:
ABSTRACT:The cigarette smoking policies of all accredited secondary schools in Arizona (N = 169) were analyzed in this study. One hundred sixty principals (94.7%) responded to a 16–item questionnaire. Data collected included the existence of a written smoking policy, how students, faculty/staff, and visitors were informed of the policy, the extent to which smoking was permitted on school grounds, the availability of smoking cessation programs and who facilitated those programs, and the inclusion of health education in the school curriculum. Findings indicated a trend toward prohibiting student smoking both during and outside of school hours and restricting faculty/staff smoking to designated areas. However, penalties were imposed only for student violation of the policy. Few schools offered smoking cessation programs and no major differences existed in policy components by school size or the existence of a written policy or health education program. Recommendations to develop or revise smoking policies for secondary schools are offere

摘要:
ABSTRACT:The appearance of health‐related topics in selected comic strips, how often they appeared, and in which comic strips health‐related topics appeared most often were examined in this study. Sunday comic strips from the 1956, 1968, 1972, and 1980 editions of the St. Louis Globe‐Democrat and St. Louis Post‐Dispatch comprised the study data base. Data recorded from the comic strips included name of strip, author, frequency and percentage of health‐related categories, comic strip type, demographics of comic strip characters, and setting and situation of health‐related topics. A total of 9,871 comic strips was analyzed. The Illness, Gender Roles, and Safety categories contained the most comic strips with health‐related topics. Male characters appeared twice as often as females. Adults appeared more often than teens and children; the home was the most c
