摘要:
ABSTRACTResults of three needs assessment studies which had the purpose of providing direction for school nursing practices which would address some of the unmet health needs of today's children and adolescents are reported. Results provide specific examples of how school nurses have not been meeting school health needs through an analysis of one specific need — integrating the developmentally disabled into the regular school setting. Data were collected from parents, teachers and other supportive personnel in schools by interview and survey methods. Environmental assessments were conducted and the policies and procedures governing health‐related activities required by special need students were reviewed. The data indicated that for developmentally disabled students, nurses were not performing the commonly accepted functions of nursing and were not transposing their knowledge of the components of health care ordinarily provided in health care settings to care provided in nontraditional health care settings. Examples of nursing functions and the activities needed to fulfill those functions are provi

摘要:
ABSTRACTThis paper presents the experience of the authors in designing and teaching a parenting class for adolescent parents who have returned to the high school setting after having had a child. In the case of many teen‐age parents the developmental tasks of adolescence may conflict with parental demands and responsibilities. These potential conflicts form the framework for important curriculum design issues. A detailed discussion relates the salient developmental characteristics of adolescence and early parenthood to the use of specific classroom strategies such as role play, biographical scripts, family diagrams, developmental charts and classroom debate

摘要:
ABSTRACTThis paper addresses the issue of adolescent sex education as a means of preventing sexuality‐related disorders. Past efforts in adolescent sex education have generally failed to empirically determine appropriate subject matter or the most effective delivery agent for these programs. Sex education programs are examined in terms of delivery agents, cognitive, attitudinal and behavorial goals and research methodology. Suggestions to empirically determine appropriate goals and delivery agents and to consider individual differences among adolescents are offered. Recommendations are made for improving experimental design in sex education researc

摘要:
ABSTRACTNutrition knowledge tests were administered to 1,193 teen‐agers in Oregon prior to units on nutrition in health and home economics classes. Mean scores on the test were low, 39.4 ± 11.6% correct. Teen‐agers generally knew the Four Food Groups, appropriate snacks, a single “best” source of nutrients and the basics of weight control. They overestimated the importance and necessary amounts of dietary protein and vitamin C. Most of these teen‐agers did not know food sources of nutrients other than the commonly known “best” source. They also had difficulty selecting a nutritious meal unless the meal followed traditional patterns. The nutrition units taught to these teen‐agers generally included the Four Food Groups, the relationship of diet to health and food sources of various nutrients. Less than one‐third of the units had major emphasis on nutritional needs during pregnancy, nutrition and athletics, retention of nutrients in food preparation or f

摘要:
ABSTRACTA health screening program, piloted in 14 school districts in Texas from 1977 to 1979, was evaluated to determine the outcome of the screenings. Outcome measures used were the number of completed referrals, the number of conditions judged by health care providers not to exist and the number of problems of potential educational significance identified. While several problems were detected, the high rate of false positives and low referral completion reported from community health care providers leads to questions concerning the effectiveness of comprehensive health screening in the schools. However, the emphasis placed on identification during the screening of children with educationally significant problems may enable the schools to better serve these children. Referral follow‐up in the community and schools to address identified problems would assure that the expenditure of funds for screening would not be futil
