摘要:
A comparative account is given of the vegetative anatomy of 32 species ofPhiladelphus. The subgcneric classification of the genus by Hu is partially supported by differences in leaf anatomy. The wood ofPhiladelphusis homogeneous except for the lianousP. mexicanus.Xylem differences between this and other species are attributed to modifications related to the lianous habit.

摘要:
The Tofieldieae consist ofNarlhecium, Nietneria, Pleea, andTofieldia.Although the three carpels of the pistil are generally coherent, their bases are separate for a short distance in some species ofTofieldiaand inPleea, where a septal nectary seems to be differentiated. These two genera are also alike in the extension of the chalaza as a filiform hook. The sutures are open at flowering only in some species ofTofieldia. Nietneriais distinguished by its inferior ovary and the alternate structure of the pistil. No raphide idioblasts were found in the carpels of any species.

摘要:
Surface features of hirsute achenes of four African species ofScleriahave been examined by SEM. All bear unicellular, terete hairs with swollen bases. As the achenes mature and dry, the hairs collapse, except for their partly silicified bases, which appear as pit‐like depressions from which the now‐flattened hairs emerge. If the achene surface is not smooth the hairs are localized on the interlacunar ridges. In addition to the hairs, three of the four species examined show minute papillate protuberances from the silicified outer tangential walls of the epidermal cells. These papillae form a further ornamentation to the achenes visible only at high magnification. The fourth species entirely lacks these papil

摘要:
For a study of hybridization inAlopecurus, chromosome numbers, karyotypes, meiotic chromosome behaviour and breeding systems have been investigated in six species. In addition to confirming many previous chromosome numbers, new triploid and tetraploid counts have been found inA. bulbosus, which have not previously been reported. The karyotypes of all species have a very similar morphology but there are differences in chromosome size which can be related to differences in nuclear DNA content. At meiosis the diploid species form bivalents, but one population ofA. aequaliscontains plants that regularly form a single quadrivalent which would appear to be interchange heterozygotes. The meiotic behaviour of the tetraploids suggests thatA. pratensisis an allotetraploid andA. geniculatusan autotetraploid. All species appear to be allogamous, although some, such asA. myosuroidesare obligate outbreeders resulting from the presence of a self‐incompatibility system, outbreeding is promoted in others by differences in the time of maturity of stigmas and anther

摘要:
Blarneya hibemicagen. et sp. nov. (Hyphomycetes, Moniliales) is described on the basis of three collections from southern Ireland. It colonizes thalli ofEnterographa crassa.Lecanactis abietinaandL. premnea, killing their fungal components, and taking over theTrentepohliathey contain for form its own lichenized thallus. Two characteristically lichen metabolites, lecanoric and schizopeltic acids, are formed byB. hibemica, the hyphae of which can become encrusted with crystals of these compounds. Conidiogenesis is holoblastic with conidia delimited by deposition of new wall layers. The occurrence of schizopeltic acid and the method of conidiogenesis suggest thatB. hibemicais an imperfect state of a member of the Hysteriales. This is only the second report of a lichenized hvphomycete from Europe.
