摘要:
The Linnean Society published in theBiological Journal, 8:299–318 (January 1977) a list of publications from 1929 to 1976 by Dr William T. Stearn, a Fellow since 1934, Vice‐President 1961–1962, Honorary Curator of the Society's Botanical Collections 1959–1985 and President 1979–1982, in connection with the award to him of the Linnean Medal in 1976. The following list continues the earlier list by enumerating publications from 1977, in association with the celebration of his 80th birthday in 1991. The list does not include reviews and letters to the press. An asterisk indicates the written version of

摘要:
WIJNANDS, D. O., 1992. Burman'sProdromus Florae Capensis.Burman's 33‐page Cape Flora, appended to his 1768Flora indica, is a prodromus only. The fully‐fledged Flora that Burman intended to publish was never produced. Burman's format in thisProdromusis very concise. It is hardly more than a list and when descriptions are given they are rarely sufficient to identify the plant intended. Some 280 new names are published in theProdromus, many of which have been overlooked until now. Comparison with Burman's herbarium specimens in Geneva and with Burman's manuscript sources, clarified many names, but others remain of uncertain application. The main collectors contributing to the Burman Cape herbarium are Hendrik Bernard Oldenland, Jan Hertog, Laurent Garcin and Jan Andries Auge. Oldenland(c.1663–1697) was master‐gardener of the Company's garden at Cape Town from 1691. He collected native plants, but his herbarium also contains many European plants which were grown in the garden. Oldenland's herbarium was donated in 1756 to Burman by Willem Roell. It consisted of bound volumes, but at present the sheets are loose and inserted in the Burman herbarium. Hertog(c.1663–1722) succeeded Oldenland as master‐gardener, it seems likely that his collections are in Burman's herbarium, though without identification as such. Garcin passed the Cape in 1720 and in 1729. He was a physician on board of Dutch East India Company ships and collected at ports of call from Ambon to Persia and to the Cape. Auge (1711–1805) was gardener of the Company's Garden at the Cape from 1747. He collected plants and probably sold them to Michael Grubb and to Maarten Houttuyn. He also accompanied visiting botanists such as Thunberg. The Amsterdam Hortus Botanicus received plant material from the Cape by order of the Directors of the East India Company. But as the Hortus did not wish to maintain a herbarium, the specimens came into the possess

摘要:
JARVIS, C. E., 1992. The Linnaean Plant Name Typification Project. Carl Linnaeus (1707–1778) introduced the consistent use of binomial names for plants and animals. As he published more than 9000 plant names, valid under the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature, their application is of considerable importance. Professor Steam's reputation as a Linnaean scholar brought him literally hundreds of requests, from all over the world, for help in the interpretation of Linnaean names. In 1980 he was instrumental in obtaining funding for a pilot study for the typification of Linnaean names. The Project was subsequently core‐funded by the Natural History Museum, and has developed into an international Project that has attracted support and collaboration on a worldwide basis. The aims, methodology and progress of the Project are reviewed, and the namesCrepis barbataL. andHieracium capenseL. are lectotypif

摘要:
SCOTLAND, R. W., 1992. Systematics, similarity and Acanthaceae pollen morphology. A brief discussion of the history of Acanthaceae classifications is provided. It is argued that several approaches utilizing pollen morphological data for the classification of the family can be identified. The Lindau pollen types are shown to have an indirect relationship to Lindau's own classification. Pollen morphological similarity is explored within the context of cladistic methodology. It is shown that some of the Lindau pollen types are analogous. It is demonstrated that shared similarities can be of three types: conflicting (homoplasious), plesiomorphic and apomorphic.

摘要:
HAWKSWORTH, D. L., 1992. The need for a more effective biological nomenclature for the 21st century. The procedures of biological nomenclature are now under immense pressure to change. Users are frustrated by the instability of names and lack of consensus, and increasingly undertake work previously the province of taxonomists; data are presented to show they tend to ignore unwelcome changes. Taxonomists themselves are deflected from both systematic and phylogenetic investigations, and documenting the world's biodiversity, by nomenclatural matters. A survey of 60 U.K. botanical taxonomists revealed that about half spent 10–75% of their research time on nomenclatural matters; extrapolated to the U.K. as a whole, botanical nomenclature could occupy up to 52 full‐time posts at a cost of £ 1.3 million. Further, an analysis of 15 monographs of fungal genera showed that overall 85% of the names investigated were not accepted. The major problems to confront relate to concepts of priority, effective and valid publication, illegitimacy, types, ambiregnal organisms and the decision‐making bodies. While most of these issues have been overcome by bacteriologists, only now are those concerned with botanical and zoological nomenclature starting to tackle them in earnest. A more effective biological nomenclature could be produced by extending the concept of lists of nomenclaturally protected names. This would resolve questions of effective and valid publication, priority, and application. Such lists would primarily assist taxonomists by dealing with much of the nomenclatural ‘noise’ of the past. Registration procedures are needed to complement such lists for names introduced in the future. The need for standard names and classifications fixed for limited periods is increasingly being met by specialist user groups and also concerns some taxonomists, but is best handled outside formal systems by appropriate specialist bodies. Increased harmonization of the Codes is possible when facing common problems and essential to resolve the difficulties posed by ambiregnal organisms. The image of taxonomy is adversely affected by unsatisfactory nomenclatural systems. Taxonomists should be responsible and refrain from changing names only for nomenclatural reasons while these matters are in discussion. Users and taxonomists need to work with nomenclaturalists to improve the effectiveness of biological nomenclature, if they are to ensure that it will fulfil both their requirements in the 21st century. The prospects for systematics are bleak if it fails to consummate the dual responsibilities of scientific endeavour and user r
