Six different sets of morphological taxonomic data were recorded for 175 species of the tribe Genisteae; these were based on the same observations, but four data sets differed in the definition of character states and three data sets differed in the method of selecting characters. Linkage diagrams drawn from single‐link clustering results were markedly different for each data set and might have led taxonomists to propose quite different classifications. The arrangements in five of the six results agreed closely in parts with one or more of the four published systems for the tribe. It is concluded that the characterization of interspecific variation in the Genisteae into comparative characters is an unstable process, and that this process may be unstable in other instance

A survey of morphological, anatomical, karyological and chemical characters has been carried out, centred on the Vicieae but extending to the neighbouring tribes Trifolieae and Ononideae. The results show thatCicer, traditionally a member of the Vicieae, has more in common with genera of the Trifolieae and Ononideae than with the rest of the Vicieae. The subtribal classification of the tribe Phaseoleae has drifted into disorder since Bentham's (1865) scheme in theGenera Plantarum.A revised classification is here proposed, which for the first time accounts for all of the currently recognized genera. This classification has seven subtribes: Cajaninae, Diocleinae, Kennediinae, Phaseolinae, Glycininae, Ophrestiinae, and Erythrininae, of which the Ophrestiinae is new. A survey for the free amino acid, canavanine, shows that it is most often present in the Diocleinae and Kennediinae and frequently absent in the rest of the tribe.
